Description
bini/ith lter @anni (bibite I. EDWARDS, Oli- HAMLINTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No.f111,525, dated February 7, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT in FuNNELs.
The Schedule `referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all Iwhom. it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, LESTER l?. EDWARDS, of Hanilinten, in the county of W'ayne and State of Pennsylv This invention relates .to a new and useful improve* ment in funncls for delivering fruit into cans in the process of canning fruit, whereby much labor and trouble are saved, having especial reference to the class of" fruit-cans which is'sealed byscrew covers; and
It consists in a funnel constructed'with a lower delivery-section which screws onto Vthe top of the can when the fruit is being placed therein, aswill be llereinafter mol'e fully described.
Inthe accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the funnel on the line f f of iig. 2, it being represented as at-' tachedto a can. The latter isshown in dotted lines. Figure 2 is a view of the bottom or reverse side of thefunnel, showing the perioiations for the escapev of the air.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the funnel, the upper or receiving portion of which is of the ordinary form. v
B is a handle attached thereto.
O is thelower or delivery-section, which is provided with an internal screw-thread, so that it will engagelwith the screw-thread ou the top of the can,
and for the time being attach the funnel to the can in thc same manner as thc permanent cover is attached.
The screw-section G is larger in diameter than the orifice through the bottom part A, so that the former projects, as seen in the drawing.
l Through this projection holes D are made, which' i y. allow the air to escape from the can when the latter is being illed with fruit. -\Vith this funnel screwed onto the topof thepcan in this manner., thel can lmay be lifted from the hotv water without danger, and the entire operation ot' filling and preparing the can for sealing is greatly facilitated.
The advantages of this funnel as compared with the ordinary Inode ofrilling fruit-cans must be obvions to all.
' Having thus described my invention, v
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatentp A funnel for filling fruit-cans in the process of canning frnit, which screws onto thc top of the can, and is provided with holes for the escape of the air, substantially as shown and described.
LESTER I). IQDXNARDS.
