Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1914.
. Application filed December 19 1913. Serial No. 807,736.
-Be it known that I. LANE E. WRIGHT, a citizen oi. the United States. residing at Fairgrange, in the county of oles. State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and use fnl huipiwiivements in A ttachmcnts For Telephone-Stands; and I do hereby declare the following to bca t'ull, clear, and exact de scripti'on of the invention. such as will enab'l'e others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in, an attachn'ient for telephone stands, and has for its object to so construct an attachment oi this charai'zter that the same can be easily and quickly attached to the conventimial form of desk telephone.
A further object oi the invention is to provide an attachment of this nature so (f011- structed that when in place on a telephone stand the, receiver, may be placed in conveuient relation to the ear thus obvrating the necessity 01 holding the receiver to the ear while telephoning.
With these and other ol jccts in view. this invention resides in the novel features of coast-motion, formation, combination and arrangement oil parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a. perspective view of a telephone stand, showing the same equipped with the attachment. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional. view through the clamp employed for attaching the device to a telephone stand.
Referring); to the drawing. the numeral 1 'iguates a telephone stand. ol the conven tional Form. the same being providial with the usual transmitter it, and receiver supporting; arm 3.
il l'ie attachment compr" a clamp 4-, which cons of curved jaws'f), said jaws being adapted to clampingly; engage the stand. 1, and is held in its proper position thereon by the clamping bolt which passed throu h the flanges 7 of the jaws 5. The flanges l terminate at their outer enda in channel members 8, the channels of which are for rcceivingi the plate 9, said plate be ing firmly held in its proper adjusted posi tion by the clamping bolt 6, which as before stated serves to clamp or attach the device to the telephone stand. The iipper end of the plate 9 terminates in a forwardly extending horizontally disposed arm 10, the tree end of which is provided with :1 10ngitudinal slot 11, the purpose of which will appear later. An angle lever 12 is provided and has its arm 13 pivotally connected to the bolt H, which is supported by the plate 9. The arm 15 of the angle lever 12 has its lower end extended slightly below the plane .of the arm 13, and is provided with a per-Q 'foration Ill in which is secured one'terminal of a coil spring 17. the other termian] of which is connected to the ear 18 carried by the lower edge of the plate 9. The; upper end of the arm 15 ot' the leverlil terminates in a hook 19 which is designed to engage over the shank 20 of the receiver: hook I5, and to hold the same in' the position as shown in Full lines in Fig. 1, and at which time comcrsation cannot be had over the liue. The free end of the book 19 terminates in an'extension 2'1. which in turn terminatec in a Curved oil-set 2:2. The olise 22 terminates in an arm :23. and it will be noted that by providing the oil-set 22 that thz arm 23 will clear the transmitter 2 when said arm is swung to its operative 0r inoperative position.
livotally connected to the upper end of the arm 23 is a clamp .B-l and by which the receiver 27 is su 'iporlcd. By pivotally connecting the clamp Llto the arm "23 the receiver may be adjusted to suit the comfort of the user. llavin; i s lower end pivotally connected to the forward end of the angle lever 12 is a bar 2H. said bar being operable in the slot 11, said bar having a shoulder 27 formed in one edge thereof for engaging the inner end wall of the slot 11. thus holding, the receiver 25 and its supporting elemen s .in the position as shown in dotted lilies in Fig. l, and at which time the conversation can be carried on over the line. The upper end of the bar 26 is provided with a button 25-; which is designed lo be engaged by [be user to force the bar downwardly so that the shoulder '37 thereof will operate to hold the receiver in the position as shown in dotted lines. l pon disengagement of the shoulder 27 from the end wall of [in slot 1], which is accomplished by swinginp the arm forwardly the spring i? will cause the angle lever 12 to rock so that the hook '19 will engage over the shank 20 of the receii'er hook, thus automatically cutting off conversation over the line.
From the foregoing dew'ri ition it will be apparent that an attachment for telephones has been provided which may be easily and quickly applied to a telephone and adjusted so that the receiver arm will be held in its lockedposition when the phone is not in use and readily released to unlock the receiver hook. and simultaneously position the receiver in convenient relation to the ear of the user, thus leaving the hands of the user free -to make notes.
What is claimed is 1. In combination with a telephone stand of an attachment comprising a clamp for engaging the stand, an angle lever pivotally supported by the clamp, one arm of said lever terminating at its upper end in a hook for normally engaging; the receiver hook to hold the same depressed, said hook terminating in an arm, a receiver pivotally sup I ,rted by the upper end of the last named arm, and means for rocking the angle lever to. move the hook from engagement with the receiver hook, thereby shifting the receiver, means to lock the hook in said position and means to automatically return said hook when said last mentioned means is released.
2. In combination with a telephone stand, of an attachment comprising clamping jaws adapted to engage the stand, channel members carried by the clamping jaws, a plate clampingly engaged between the char nel members, a horizontally disposed arm carried by the plate and having a slot formed in one end thereof, an angle lever having its horizontal arm pivotally support ed by the plate and its vertical arm terminating in a hook for engaging the receiver hook to hold the same depressed, said hook terminating in an arm, a receiver pivotally supported by the upper end of said arm, a bar operable in the slot and having its lower end pivotally connected to one end of said horizontal lever arm, a shoulder carried by the bar and cooperating with the slot to hold the hook from engagement with the receiver hook when said bar is depressed, and means connecting the plate and vertical arm or" the angle lever to swing the hook into engagement with the receiver hook when the bar is released.
