To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN FREDRIGK MAKOWSKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and useful Telephone Attachment, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a device for holding the earpiece of the ordinary desk telephone, the object being to provide means whereby the switch lever may be held down or allowed to rise to connect the service with central without having to hold the earpiece in one hand.
Another object of the invention is to so place the earpiece as to have it and the mouthpiece in the proper position to receive and transmit the conversation without disconnecting them.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent as the description proceeds.
In the drawings, in which the same numerals of reference are applied to the same portions throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a desk telephone having this attachment applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a view of the attachment and telephone at right angles to Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the band which holds the attachment to the telephone standard, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one form of the earpiece supporting lever in which a spring steel of brass wire is used in the place of a flat plate.
The numeral 1 indicates the base of the telephone, 2 the standard, 3 the receiver and 4 the mouthpiece at the upper end of the' standard. Projecting from the side of the standard is a forked lever 5 which commonly supports the receiver and which lever operates switch points to disconnect the local station from central in a manner which forms no part of this invention, and which is therefore, not shown herein.
Secured to the standard at a suitable elevation is a band. 10, a screw 11 clamping the Specification of Letters Patent.

band in place. This band pivotally supports an upwardly extending lever 12, and it has a stop 13 against which said lever lies when the receiver is in use. The lever 12 has a cam thereon which holds the lever 5 down when the receiver is not in use, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 1. The lever 12 is twisted at 14 to present the earpiece to the user at the desired angle with respect to the mouthpiece, and another band 15, similar to the band around the standard is passed around the body of the earpiece and is secured, together with the earpiece, to the upper end of the lever 12, the screw by which said band is secured in place enabling the earpiece to be still further adjusted in angle to suit the user.
In use the pivot point of the lower end of the lever 12 is so placed as to enable said lever to pass the vertical whenever the earpiece is in use, or out of use, thus enabling it to remain in either desired position. course, in one position the telephone may be used and in the other its switches cut it out of the service.
The lever shown in Fig. 4 is made of wire formed with loops at 15 and 16, the wire at the latter loop being long enough to form the cam 17.
It is to be observed that the receiver holder may be placed in the most convenient position for the operation of the switch arm 5, it being unnecessary to have the receiver exactly at right angles to the transmitter for the reason that it is only necessary to speak in front of the transmitter to effect the sending of the speech.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, modifications within the scope of the claim being expressly reserved, is as follows:
An attachment for telephones comprising a clamp having a portion adapted to encircle a telephone standard and two adjacent parallel portions, one of which carries a stop over-lapping the end of the other portion, a thumb screw to secure the clamp on the standard, an arm pivotally connected with my hand this 4" day of August A.
