[ AV v I THE NORRJS PETERS (0.. F'HOTOLITHOH WASHINGTON. 1c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HIGGIN, 0F NEWPORT, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO THE HIGGIN MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
WINDOW-SASI-I-GROOVING MACHINE.
T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HIGGIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-SashGrooving Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
In supplying window sash for windows with inserted strips of sheet metal for Weatherstripping purposes, it is necessary to remove the sash from the window and to cut grooves therein for the reception of the in sert. It is not practicable in Weatherstripping houses already erected to remove the sash to the factory, and the necessary grooving must be done on the premises. To do this by hand involves the expenditure of a great amount of time and labor, and my in vention in the present instance is directed to the construction of a portable machine which can be readily moved from place to place to do the necessary grooving, and in which the necessary grooving saw can be driven directly by a suitable electric motor.
The special object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the sash may be readily and easily guided as it passes through the machine and in which the guides may be readily and easily adjusted to accommodate themselves to the varying sizes of the sash.
The several features of my invention and the various advantages resulting from their use conjointly or otherwise will be apparent from the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the lines 3, 3, of Fig. 2, showing in plan view the guide block.
1 is a window sash, shown in the drawing in position to have its side 2 grooved to receive the weather strip. Any convenient table or bench with a top 3 is used to mount the machine. A motor 4, with lugs 5 for securing it to the base of the table is provided. A circular saw 6 is directly driven by the motor and extends upwardly through a slot prepared therefor in the table. Secured to this table, spaced a proper distance Specification of Letters Patent.

inside of the projecting saw, is a guide rail 7, to provide a proper spacing for the saw cut inside of the edge of the sash. Erected on the table is the guide standard 18' for preserving the sash in a true vertical position while being cut. The standard has longitudinal grooves 9, 9, to form a slideway for the guiding portion proper. It has also a longitudinal slot 10, 11 tohold this portion in place, and a clamping screwhead 12 holds the parts upon proper adjustment- The guiding portion proper is preferably formed of a somewhat wide longitudinally disposed strip 13, mortised to slide in the grooves above mentioned, and held by the bolt 11. On its outer face is mounted the longitudinal narrow strip 14, and at the top of the narrow strip is placed the laterally disposed strip 15. The strip 15 has its ends rounded and beveled, and the central portion of its face flattened and flush with the strip 14:.
The standard and its parts are adjustable as has been described to guide the sash, and it is readily appreciated that the guide portion proper should be raised to abut against the sash side opposite to the one being grooved (Fig. 1). The beveled feature causes the sash to run easily into proper position flush with the strips 1-1 and 15, and these strips should be positioned directly above the guide rail 7 heretofore mentioned. This then assures a proper vertical position to the sash.
I provide also an adjustable guide block 16 to hold the window sash in position. This block has a vertical inner face 17 and a beveled face 18 above the inner one. Saw
A metallic plate 22 is secured to the table, on the guide block side of the slot for the circular saw to insure against wear and tear at this point and to provide for smooth running.
The fact that'the long guide rail 7 is provided, taken with the other guides, enables me to handle Window sash that are old and warped as readily and easily as new sash. The grooves can be out perfectly true, which is not possible with a hand plane, which necessarily has its bearing. on the sash, and not on the guide rail. Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A groove cutting machine for Window sashes, a saw to be mounted under a slotted table and a guiding device adapted to be mounted on the table over the saw slot therein, comprising a lateral guide 1110111111 ed on the table on one slde of the saw, a resihent guide on the other, and a vertical guide mounted on said table having a head adjustable to engage the window sash rail opposite the one to be grooved.
2. A groove cutting machine for window sashes, a saw to be mounted under a slotted table and a guiding device adapted to be mounted on the table over the saw slot therein, comprising a lateral guide mounted on the table on one side of the saw, a resilient guide on the other, and a vertical guide mounted on said table having a head adjustable to engage the window sash rail opposite the one to be grooved, said head having a laterally extending portion rounded to insure the sash rail against catching when being slid onto the guide, for the purpose described.
