DEVICE FOR ATTACHING BOOK-COVERS;
' ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
yMy invention relates to improvements in devices for attaching book covers, and its object is to provide a device of this characterwhich will hold the book, together with the end sheets, in position to apply the glue thereto, and will also provide a guide for placing `the outer c over in position, to provide a device which will besimple in con-` struction and operation, which Awill be adjustable to accommodate vbooks of various dimensions and to provide the same with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly7 pointed out in the claims. v
It is common practice in the art of book binding, especially when binding paper covered books such as pamphlets, catalogues, etc., on which a double thickness of cover is used, to irst attach the inner part of the cover commonly known as the end sheets, to the book after which kthe glue must bey spread upon these end sheets, and also to the back edge ofthe book in order to afIiX the cover thereto.
The device consists o-f means for clamping the book while the above mentioned operation is being performed, and also for supporting the end sheets in outspread position so that the glue may be easily and properly applied thereto.
The device is also provided with means by which the cover may be guided to proper position, and the device is also adapted to be adjusted to accommodate books of various dimensions, and is provided with certain other novel features of construction and arrangement, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- y
Figure l is a perspective view of a book, having the end sheets aflixed theretoy and outspread in position to receive the glue, and this figure also shows the cover ready to be applied to the book; Fig. 2 isa per- Specication of Letters Patent. i

spective view of the completed book; Fig. 3 1s a perspective view of a gluing device embodyingk my invention, shown with the book and end sheets in position therein; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device with one of the supporting plates removed; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the same; and Fig. 6 is an inverted sectional planr on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Like numbers refer to like parts in al1 of the figures.
l represents a base plate having a fixed bracket 2 extending upward therefrom, on which is detachably mounted a supporting plate 3, said plate extending in a horizontal position. Opposite the fixed bracket 2 and spaced slightly apart therefrom is a second bracket 4t hinged as at 5 to the base plate andprovided with a supporting plate 3 detachably secured thereto, and similar to the one pro-vided on the fixed bracket. The opposite vertical surfaces 2a and la of lthe brackets 2 and 4- being parallel, serve as clamping members between which thebook 46 is gripped when operated upon. l The ,bracket 4 by virtue of its `hinged connection 5 with thebase plate is adapted to be tilted away from the fixed bracket 2, to permit the lbook to be inserted between the two clamping surfaces, and an eccentric lever 7 is pivotally connected to this bracket and engages the base plate, to'forcey this bracket g toward the fixed bracket, to clamp the hook between said bracketsand adjust the lplates 3 in the same horizontal plane with the back of the book. y
The space between the clamping surfaces Q and 4a may be varied4 by means 0f the slotted hinged plates 5 which connect the hinged bracket 4 to the base plate, and by virtue of this adjustment bec-ks of various thicknesses may be accommodated in the destop 8 extends from the liked bracket across the rear of the device opposite the spacebetween the clamping surfaces of the brackets and serves as a guide to adjust theposition of the bookwhen placed in the device.`
y The block 9 at the bottom of the space between -the brackets may be varied in dimensions to accommodate different sizes of books and serves as a rest for the lower edge of the book when it is placed in position.
Each of the supporting plates 3 is provided with guides l0 which are used to adjust the cover to proper position when it is placed upon the outspread end sheets.
ln using this device, the operator first tilts the hinged bracket el away from the fixed bracket 2 and places the book 6 to which the end sheets ll have been attached, between the clamping surfaces 2 and 4a with the said end sheets outspread and supported by the plates 3. In this position the lower edge of the book is supported by the block 9 and the stop 8 is engaged by the rear edge of the book and governs its position in the device. By movement of the eccentric lever 7 the hinged bracket l is moved to operative position, clamping the book between the surfaces 2f* and 4ta, and holding the outer surfaces of the end sheets in a horizontal plane flush with the back of the book and in a convenient position to apply glue to the outer surfaces of the end sheets and also to the back of the book. After this has been done, the cover 12 is laid upon the outspread end sheets being located in the proper position by the guides l0 and is then pressed in place which completes the operation, after which the book is released by operation of the ecs centric lever 7, which tilts the hinged bracket away from the fixed bracket whereupon the book is readily removed from the device.
l/Vhat I claim is:
l. A device for attaching book covers, comprising a base, a bracket fixed on the base having a vertical clamping surface and a horizontal supporting surface, a bracket adjustable on the base having a vertical clamping surface opposite the vertical surface of the first bracket and a horizontal surface in the saine plane of the horizontal surface of the first bracket, and means for forcing the adjustable bracket toward the fixed bracket.
2. A device for attaching book covers, comprising a base, a bracket fixed on the base having a clamping surface and a supporting surface at right angles thereto, a hinged bracket having a clamping surface and a supporting surface, said clamping surfaces being parallel and spaced apart and the supporting surfaces being in the saine plane, and means for forcing said hinged bracket toward the xed bracket.
3. A device for attaching book covers, comprising a base, a bracket fixed on the base and having a clamping surface, a
bracket hinged to the base and having a clamping surface, said clamping surfaces being parallel and spaced apart, means for varyingy the space between said clamping surfaces, detachable supporting plates one on each bracket, said plates being in the same plane with each other and at right angles to the clamping surfaces, and means for forcing the hinged bracket toward the fixed bracket. l
A. A device for attaching book covers comprising a base, a bracket fixed on the base and having a clamping surface and a supporting surface at right angles to each other, a hinged bracket having a clamping surface and a supporting surface at right angles to each other, said clamping surfaces being parallel with each other and spaced apart, and the supporting surfaces being in the same plane, means for forcing said hinged bracket toward the fixed bracket, and a stop to be engaged by the rear edge of the book.
5. A device for attaching book covers, comprising a base, a bracket fixed on the base and having a clamping surface and a supporting surface at right angles to each other, a hinged bracket having a clamping surface and a supporting surface at right angles to each other, said clamping surfaces being parallel and spaced apart and the supporting surfaces being in the same plane, means for forcing said hinged bracket toward the fixed bracket, and a removable support for the lower edge of the book.
6. A device for attaching book covers, comprising a base, a bracket fixed on the base and having a clamping surface, a bracket hinged to the base and having a clamping surface, the said clamping surfaces being parallel and spaced apart, and the hinges on the hinged bracket being adjustable to vary the space between y the clamping surfaces, a detachable plate on each of said brackets, said plates being in the same plane and at right angles to the clamping surfaces, means for forcing the hinged bracket toward the fixed bracket, a removable support for the lower edge of the book, a stop to be engaged by the rear edge of the book and guides on the supporting plates to govern the location of the cover.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence vof two witnesses.
