2 Claims. (Cl. 129-1) This invention relates to a posting apparatus and rack and loose sheet binder adapted for use therewith which greatly facilitates and expedites the manipulation of the sheets for inspection and posting.

The main objects of the invention are:

First, to provide a posting apparatus comprising a loose sheet binder and supporting rack therefor which facilitate the manipulation of the sheets for inspection and manipulation and of the binder to free the sheets and to rebind or secure them in the binder.

Second, to provide a posting rack which may be readily adjusted to position the binder for freeing the sheets therefrom and for rebinding the sheets, and also to support the sheets for convenient inspection and posting manipulation.

Third, to provide a posting rack having these advantages, which is adjustable for use with binders having backs of ditterent widths and at the same time maintain the desired angular support for the cover.

Fourth, to provide a loose sheet binder which etfectively retains or supports the sheets for handling as a bound volume and one from which the sheets may be quickly released and quickly and easily aligned to receive the binding posts.

Fifth, to provide a structure having these several advantages which is relatively simple and compact and easily manipulated.

Further objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.

A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. l is a perspective view of the posting apparatus of my invention with the binder and sheets in posting or inspecting position.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the sheets in another position with one of the rack walls collapsed and one hinder cover superimposed thereon and the post bar in partially retracted position.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear perspective View of the binder with sheets therein.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view partially in section on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of Fig. 3 with fragments of the rack associated therewith to illustrate a step in positioning the binder upon the rack.

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. 4 with parts broken away and in section to illustrate structural details.

The rack of the embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises the base 1 desirably formed of sheet metal, and having downturned side and end edge flanges Jnited States Patent 0 2,829,651 Patented Apr. 8, 1958 2 and 3 respectively. The feet 4 are secured to the inturned portions 5 on the side flanges 2.

The rack side wall 6 is secured at its lower end to the base 1 and is supported in outwardly inclined position by the strut or brace.

The wall 3 is formed as a sheet metal stamping and has rearwardly projecting flanges 9 to which the springable hinge members 10 are secured as by means of rivets 11. At their springable lower ends the hinge members 10 are provided with pivots 12 which may be selectively engaged with one of the longitudinally spaced pivot openings 13 in the side flanges of the base. The strut 14 is pivotally hinged to the rear side of the wall 8 by the hinge 15 so that the strut may be swung outwardly to supporting position, as is shown in Fig. 1, or collapsed against the rear side of the wall 8. The base is provided with a series of slots 16 with which the tongues 17 on the strut 14 may be selectively engaged, the wall 8 being thus supported for adjustment. longitudinally of the base to properly support binders having backs of different widths and at the same time maintain the proper angular support or relation.

The sheets 18 are conventionally illustrated and are provided with registering post holes 19.

The binder of my invention illustrated comprises a rigid back member 20 having hinge knuckles 21 on each longitudinal edge thereof and to which the covers 22 are secured by means of the pintles 23.

The back member is provided with inwardly projecting binding bars 24 and 25, these being desirably formed integrally with a sheet metal back plate 26 which is secured to the member 20 by rivets 27, the rivets also secure the knuckle members 21 to the back. In elfect, the back is an integral structure including the liner member 261 which is fixedly secured to the inner side of the plate 26.

The binding posts 28 are secured to the post bar 29 to form a unit therewith. The binder bar 25 is provided with post holes 30 spaced to receive the posts 28 while the binder bar 24 is provided with sockets 31 to receive ends of the posts. The posts are provided with keepers 32 with which the locking bar 33 coacts to secure the posts in sheet engaging position. The posts have tubular portions 34 at their inner ends for receiving the ejecting members 35. The members 35 are under spring tension or spring bias when the posts are in sheet engaged position, as is shown in Fig. 4-, so that when the locking bar 33 is actuated to release the posts, the posts are ejected from the binder, providing of course that the adjacent cover is in position to permit such ejection, as is illustrated in Fig. 2.

To facilitate aligning the sheets in the binder to receive the post the back is provided with upwardly projecting flanges 37 at the ends thereof and spaced to permit the positioning of the sheets between them. The inner edges of the flanges 37 are flared outwardly at 33 to further facilitate the positioning of the sheets.

A blade spring 3 is fixedly secured at 40 to the outer side of one of the flanges 37 with its free end engaging the projecting end 41 of the locking bar The other end 42 of the locking bar constitutes a finger piece.

To prevent sliding movement of the binder on the base of the rack, the rack is provided with an abutment or holder 43 spaced from the lower end of the wall 6 sufliciently to permit the lower edge of one of the covers being engaged behind it with the cover in supported relation to the wall 6.

in preparation for use the binder is placed on the rack, as is shown in Fig. 2, with one cover supported by the wall 6 and its lower edge engaged with a holder or abutment 43 and the other cover opened to rest upon the collapsed wall 8 of the rack. The locking bar is then actuated to release the post which results in the post bar being automatically ejected from the binding bars which frees the sheets. The rack wall 8 is then adjusted to the desired position longitudinally of its angle adjusted to meet the requirements of the particular user. The sheets are then free and supported for convenient manipulation for inspection and/or posting. When work is completed, the sheet body is positioned as shown in Fig. 2, the wall 8 collapsed and with the adjacent cover supported thereon which permits the insertion of the binding posts in the binder, the sheets being properly aligned to receive them.

I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical embodiment thereof. I have not at tempted to illustrate or describe other adaptations of the embodiments, as it is believed that this disclosure would enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and is desired to be secured by Letters Patent 1. A post rack comprising a base, a first wall fixedly mounted on the base, a second wall having rearwardly projecting flanges at its side edges, said base having longitudinally spaced pivot openings in its side edges, springable arms secured to said flanges of said second wall and provided with pivots at their lower ends selectively engageable with said pivot holes in said base, a flat strut plate pivotally mounted on the rear side of said second wall and provided with downwardly projecting tongues at its lower end, said base having a series of longitudinally spaced holes with which the tongues of said strut may be selectively engaged, and a cover holder disposed on said base at the inner side of and in spaced relation to said first wall.

2. A post rack comprising a base, a first wall fixedly mounted on the base, a second wall having rearwardly projecting flanges at its side edges, said base having longitudinally spaced pivot openings in its side edges, springable arms secured to said flanges of said second wall and provided with pivots at their lower ends selectively engageable with said pivot holes in said base, and a fiat strut plate pivotally mounted on the rear side of said second wall and provided with downwardly projecting tongues at its lower end, said base having a series of lonitgudinally spaced holes with which the tongues of said strut may be selectively engaged.
