EDWARD ZIMMERMAN AND GORA B. BRITT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
SPOOL-HOLDER.
Application filed October 11, 1912. i Serial No. 725,292.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD ZIMMERMAN and Conn B. Bnrr'r, citizens of the United.
States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of the invention is the provision of a spool holder which is particularly adapted to be used as an accessory for sewing machines which are not provided with an extra spindle or pin for receiving a spool of thread to be wound upon the bobbin, the holder being adapted to receive two spools of thread thereon, whereby the sewing operation and that of winding the bobbin may be simultaneously performed.
In carrying out the object of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a conventional illustration of a sewing machine showing the spool holder applied thereto and constructed in accord ance with the invention. Fig. :2 is a detail perspective view of the spool holder. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Before describing the invention in detail it might be stated that many of the sewing machines now in use provide no means whereby the bobbin may be supplied with thread while the machine is being used for sewing purposes thus rendering it necessary for the operator to use the machine exclusively for winding the bobbin whenever it is necessary and wasting time which might be otherwise utilized for sewing purposes.
In order to overcome this objectionable feature, the present invention has been devised and comprises an elongated hollow cylindrical tube 5 which is adapted to be mounted upon the spindle 6 carried by the usual form of bracket support 7, the latter being carried, inthe ordinary manner, by the base plate 8 of the sewing machine.
The spool of thread to be used for sewing is first mounted upon the spindle 6 and should it be desired to wind the bobbin of the machine, one end of the tube 5 is placed over the spindle 6 and into the usual opening formed in the spool. Intermediate the ends of the tube 5 the same is provided with an annulus 9 which provides a support for a second spool of thread which is mounted upon the upper end of the tube 5. The second spool of thread is connected to the bobbin and it will thus be seen that the sewing operation and that of winding the bobbin may both be carried on simultaneously.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing a spool holder which is simple in construction, thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minimum, and which is durable and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
l/Vhat is claimed is 1 As an article of manufacture a spool carrying member comprising a tube. having a length exceeding the combined length of two spools, and an annulus secured to said tube to provide a support for the upper spool.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
