I DIE-STOCK AND OILEE THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13,1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat we, MATTHEW M. FroK- LING and Cyrus B. JoirNsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of Richland and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Die-Stocks and Oilers Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to thread cutting implements such as die stocks and a the like and has particular reference to a new and improved oiling device for association therewith.
An object of. our invention is to provide an oiling device which may be quickly and easily attached to any die stock for use when the stock is in operation.
Another object of our invention is to provide an oiling device of the class described which is simple in construction, strong and durable, is cheap to manufacture and may be retailed at reasonable cost.
A further object of our invention is to provide an oiling device which may be maintained in operation when the die stock is in use, the oiling device having means associated therewith for controlling the supply of the lubricant so as to evenly distribute the same upon the work.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of our improved die stock oiler will appear from the following detailed description and the claims, taken witi an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a die stock showing our improved oiling device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the oiling device;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragment-a1 elevational view of one of the retaining clamps.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 10 designates the die stock, the same being provided with the usual handles 11 and dies 12. In the form of die stock shown the body thereof is circular in configuration, this being the prevailing type of stock now in use.
The oiling dev e of our invention comprises an annular b llo y 13 p o id d with inner and outer annular walls 14: and 15, respectively, and side walls 16.
A plurality of pairs of partitions 17 are arranged withinthe body 13' to form lubricant reservoirs 18. Filling openings 19 are provided in the outer annular. wall 15,
said openings being closed normally. by spring closure members 20. 7
Oil or a similar lubricant isfed from the reservoirs 18 by means of a pluralityof inwardly extending radially; arranged" tubes 21, the inner ends of which are curvedas at 22 and tapered to form nozzles. i
The tube 21 communicates with the reservoirs 18 as indicated. at; 23, the supply of lubricant being controlled by valve screws 24, said screws 24 having the inner ends thereof tapered as at 25 to form needle valves, and the outer ends thereof provided with knurled heads 26.
To secure our improved oiling device to a die stock we provide a plurality of brackets 28 right-angular in configuration. The arms of said brackets 28 which engage the stock are provided with slots 29, retaining screws 30 passing through said slots into one of the side walls of the body 13. The other arms of the bracket members 28 are maintained in connection with the die stock by means of screws 31, said screws being provided with knurled heads 32 to facilitate manipulation of the same.
In use the oiler is applied as shown in Fig. 1 and the die stock used in the ordinary manner. When applied to the die stock the nozzle portions 22 of the tubes 21 preferably are disposed toward the body of the die stock so as to deliver the lubricant to a point adjacent the dies and on the work. It is preferable that the oiler be placed on the side of the die stock next the Work so that the work will be oiled previous to cutting. It will be readily apparent that our improved oiler facilities the cutting of threads on pipes, iron rods and the like and obviates the necessity of stopping to oil the work with an ordinary oil can. The device may be cheaply manufactured and sold, contains no complicated adjustments and is capable of universal application to die stocks by merely changing the size or shape of the body 13.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive under tand g c t e cen tru t n, p a:
tion and advantages of our invention may be had, and while we have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, we, desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a die stock, of an oilertherefor, including an annular body adapted for concentric mounting on a die stock and provided with a plurality of reservoirs, and tubes leading radially inward from said reservoirs adjacent the work to deliver a lubricant thereto.
The combination with a die stock, of an oiler therefor, including an annular body provided with a plurality of reservoirs, means to fasten said body concentrically upon a die stock, tubes leading radially 'Copies of this patent may be obtained for from said reservoirs, and valve screws carried by said body for controlling the supply of liquid through said tubes.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a die stock, of an annular body provided with a plurality of oil reservoirs, inwardly directed radially arranged tubes carried by said body and communicating with said reservoirs to deliver the contents thereof to an object being threaded, clamping members having radial adjustments and adapted to secure said body to a die stock, said reservoirs being provided with filling openings, and a plurality of radially arranged needle valve screws for controlling communication through said tubes.
In testimony whereof, we affix our'signatures hereto.
MATTHEW M; FIGKLING. CYRUS 'B. JOHNSON.
