This invention has for its object to provide means for securing glass lights in a window sash, a skylight or a cold frame sash or the like without the necessity for the use of putty.
The invention relates to that type of glasssecuring means which consists of a strip of I lead or other ductile metal embedded in the frame and adapted to be bent against the edge of the glass and is particularly designed for use with metal frames and to afford a flange .fitting between the metal frame and the edge of the glass to serve as a cushioning packing that will prevent contact between the metal frame and the glass, though it is capable of use with frames other than metal frames. With the above and otherobjects in view the invention consists in the means for securing window lights as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts. in different views:
Figure-1 isa view of a. window with its lights secured in the manner of this invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through a metal window sash provided with the glass securing means of this invention; Fig. 3 is a similar view of a skylight bar with the glass-securing means of this invention; Fig. 4 is a similar view of a cold frame sash; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one end of the. lead glasssecuring strip of this in-' vention before the securing flange thereof is bent; and, Fig. 6 is a similar view thereof after the securing flange is bent.
In these drawings 10 indicates the glass ,window light and 11 is the sash therefor which, if of metal construction, is preferably though not necessarily formed in sections as shown in Fig. 2 with bolts '12 or other means for holding them together and forming a groove 13 in alinement with the face of the projecting flange 14:. The groove 13 forms a seat extending entirely around 1 the window light to receive the heavy rib portion 15 of a sealing'strip of lead or other soft metal which is approximately T- shape in cross section as shown in Fig. 5 with the rib 15 constituting one of the lateral extending parts thereof. The other lateral extending part of the sealing strip 16 is'thinner than the flange 15 and is in the same plane therewith while the third part forming a flange at right angles to the common plane of flanges 15 and 16 is preferably tapering and is also thin. Thissoft metal sealing strip has its flange 15 let into the groove 13 entirely around the opening in the sash for the window light, the flange 16 lying flat against the projecting flange 1 1 of the sash so as to form a gasket or soft metal packing between the inner face of the glass and'th'e metal frame, the flange 17 also serving the same purpose at the edge of the glass, but being adapted to be bent after the glass is in place so as to lie flat against the outer face of the glass to hold the glass in place. By means of this soft metal strip the glass is not only securely held in place in the metal sash, the flange 15 thereof anchoring it against displacement, but it further serves to protect the edge of the glass from contact with the metal sash and thus prevents the glass being broken by jars or vibrations of the metal parts.
In a skylight as shown in Fig. 3 the metal strip of this invention serves the same purpose in a like manner, the skylight frame being provided with the groove 13 between its clamped members 18 and 19, or otherwise. In any case the groove 13- to receive the flange 15 of the soft metal strip may be tion is shown in Fig. 4 where the sash frame 20, which is here shown as a cold frame sash, is of single piece construction with the groove 13 formed therein to receive the soft metal sealing strip as before.
By means of this invention the glazing of a metal sash may be quickly and easily accomplished without the necessity for the use ofv putty or other plastic sealing material and the soft metal sealing strip itself constitutes the only material in contact with the glass except in cases where it is desired to pp y a coat ng f cem nt 21 along the contact faces of the metal strip as shown. The use of such cement is optional as the soft metal strip is entirely effective for seal ing the glass without it.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a window sash and its glass light, said sash having a groove in theplane of the glass bearing face around the glass opening, of a soft metal sealing strip T-shaped in cross section with one of its lateral flanges fitting within the groove and its other lateral flange seated against the glass bearing face of the sash to form a gasket between saidface of the sash and the glass and the third flange being adapted to be bent over the edge of the glass for holdin'g'it iiiplace.
2. The combination with a metal window sash and its glass light, said sash being provided with a projecting flange around its glass opening forming a bearing face for the glass and also provided with a groove around the glass opening in the same plane with the bearing face, of a soft metal strip T-shaped; in cross section with one of its laterally extending flanges thicker than the others and fitting within said groove and its other lateral flange bearing against the bearing face of the projecting flange of'the sash to form a gasket between the glass and the bearing face of the sash, said glass'fitting within the glass openingI of the sash with one face against the gas et formin flange of the soft metal strip and with its edge against the third flange of the soft metal strip and said third flange of the soft metal strip being bentaround the edge of the glass to hold it in place.
3. The combination with a window sash and its glass light, said sash being rabbeted to provide a glass seat having a bearing face in a plane parallel with the plane of the glass light and having a groove with one wall thereof in the same plane as the glass bearing face of the sash to extend such glass bearing face to the depth of the groove, of a soft metal strip 'T-shape in cross section forming three diverging flanges, two of which extend in opposite directions and lie in the same plane, and bear against the extended glass bearing face of the sash, and one of them being of greater thickness than the other to'fit within the groove of the sash, the third flange extending from the others in a plane approximately at right angles to the common plane of the others and fitting against the glass seat and adapted to be bent over the edge of the glass light .after the glass light is in'place with its edge bear ng against the last mentioned flange and its face bearing against the thinner flange of the first mentioned flanges so that said bent flange bears against the opposite face of the glass light and lies in a plane approximately parallel with the common plane of the other two flanges.
