r I specification of Letters Patent. 1
Patented o t. 20,1914.
Application filed anuary 31, 1914. Serial N 0. 815,580.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES GzsRnvnny, a subject of the King of Sweden, residingat Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step- Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in step ladders and has as its object the construction of a device of thispcharacter with a large platform at the top thereof instead of the usual narrow step.
Another object is to provide a device having greater strength and rigidity than the usual step ladder and yet which may be folded in a compact manner.
With these and other objects in view my invention comprises the novel construction and arrangement of parts as herein de scribed and pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification wherein,
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved device in its open position. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section of the same showing the manner of folding. Fig, 3 is a view in vertical section showing the device in its extended position. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 44 Fig. 2.
Referring to corresponding parts 'by the same numerals of reference, 1 denotes the main standards carrying the steps 2 and as they stand in an inclined position are provided with angular ends torest on the fioor and to receive the supporting platform 3. A pair of rear supporting members 4 is provided having the connecting strips 5 and 6 adjacent the top and bottom, and having their ends also cut on an angle. Pivotally mounted to the tops of supporting members 1 and 4 are the auxiliary supports 7 and 8, which in turn are pivoted together at their bottom ends, so that when extended each side frame of the device is shaped likean inverted letter W.
Pivoted to the lower step 2 is a brace rod 9, which in turn is pivoted between double brace rods 10, which have their opposite ends pivoted to the connecting strip 6 and Which have notches 11 formed on the underside thereof adjacent the end pivoted to rod 9. These notches are adapted to engage a rod 12 connecting the lower ends of supporting member 8. Thus when extended these brace rods prevent the spreading apart of the front and rear supports and the movement of the center supports ineither direction. The platform 3 is providedwith cross cleats 18, which are adapted to engage on the front and rear of the tops of the supporting members and so prevent longitudinal movement thereon.
Extending from connecting strip 6 is a guidemember 14, which at the upper end is recurvedand fastened to the inside of the strip 5. The rear end of platform 3 is slidably mounted on this strip as shown at Fig. i
4, the forward end of the platform being provided with hooks 15 adjacent the sides thereof. Thus these hooks on the forward end and the slidable mounting on the rear end prevent lateral displacement of the platform.
To fold the device platform 3 is raised from the tops of the legs to a position parallel with rod 4 and allowed to slide down the same until the hooks 15 engage the piece 5. The brace rods 9and 10 are then raised upward at their central pivotal point allowing the supporting members to be folded together as shown in Fig. 2.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it will of course be understood that changes may be made in minor details and construction without departing from the spirit thereof.
What I claim and wish to cover by Letters Patent is 2-.
1. A step ladder comprising a frame, each side of which consists of a front and a rear inclined supporting member, two intermediate supporting members, having their lower ends pivoted to each other and their top ends pivoted, one to the top end of said front and one to the top of said rear supporting members and a platform supported by the top of said members, and a folding of said rear member, connecting strips be- 'tion frame, ea h side cons st ng of four pivotally attached supporting members, which when eXtendedha-ve the form of an invertedletter W, a brace rod hinged at its center and pivotally attaehed adjacent the bottom of; the; front and rear supportingv 1 members and holding the center support so as to prevent relative movement between the said supporting members, steps between the front pair of said supporting members, a platform on the top of said supporting members, cleats on the underside of said platform to prevent movement thereof, connect.- ing strips between the rear pair of support- -ing members adjacent the top and bottom thereof, a slide rail attached to said connecting strips and said platform being slidably connected to said rail to allow the folding of the same.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
