Be it known that I, NORMAN D. BISHOP, a citizen of the" United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Adjustable Compartment for Beds; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it l appertains to make and use `the same.

This invention relates to an adjustable compartment or a bedmore particularly to improvements of the compartmentfor a bed disclosed in. Patent No. 1,063,908, dated J une 3, M13-and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel and advantageous features and in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts and devices as will be apparent from the description and claims which 4follow hereinafter.

It has been found in practice that the pivoted arc-shaped plate or canopy described in the above patent is objectionable in that it is comparativelydiiicult and expensive to manufacture, practically impossible to make it tightV and wind proof, requires heavy counterweights,l collects 'dust and moisture when it is disposedon the out-`y side of the buildingand carries such dust or moisture into the room `of thebuild'ing when it is swung to be disposed on theinside ofthe building, dores not permit` of completely opening the bed compartmentl at both .the front and rear'to enjoy cooling drafts of air in warm weather, 'shuts in and prevents the wants of young children occu-l pying the bed from `being readily known when it is swung to be disposed on the inside of the building, vmust be swung to the outside of the building in inclement weather l or else the curtain must be pulled downl which curtain in consequence of exposure to the elementsis caused to shrink and rot Aand must soon be replaced at considerable ex'- pense, and it mars thexappearanoe of the building because its curved portion does not comport with the architectural lines of the exterior of the building. l Ubjects of the invention arey to 'provide an improved bed compartmentwhich avoids the foregoing objections, and which is' simple and economical in construction, strong and durable, neat in appearance, readily1 Specification of iLetters Patent.

The gutter 47 preferably consists of a curved strip of spring metal which has one of its ends suitably afxed to a spring metal tongue 48 which is suitably secured to the section 35 and has its other end adapted to bear movably against an abutment 49 on the erosspiece 19.

A curtain 50 mounted on the usual springactuated roller 51 bearing in the walls 17 is adapted to close the front portion of the lcompartment when the

21, 22, 24, 25 and 26 have been adjusted to open said front portion of the compartlnent. The curtain 50 is preferably secured by a rigid strip 52 to sector plates 53 which are mount ed on pivots 54 on the Walls 17 andhave thereon pins 55 adapted to fit in eyes 56 -in the sides of the curtain, so that the sector plates may be turned by a handle 57 to draw the curtain evenly and tightly over the arcshaped periphery of the sector plates to close the front portion of the compartment, see Figs. 1 and 7.

HIn the modified construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the rear portion of the compartment which is disposed on the exterior ofthe building, the sections 58 are movably fitted in guideways 59 in the

17 and 18 and adapted to be moved to occupy a position behind the vertical stationary wall 32 at the rear end of the compartment. Any suitable or approved means may be used to hold the section 58 in adjusted position, that shown in Figs. 8 and 9 consisting of a spring-'actuated roller 60 which is suitably mounted at the upper part of the

17 and 18 and has attached thereto one end of a metal tape 61 which latter has the other 'end thereof suitably attached to the upper part of the section 58. In Fig. 3, the hinged

17 and 18 and are hinged vto the crosspiece 19, may be adjusted and held in raised position by means operatively connected with the section 63 such as that which has been described as operatively connected to the section 35 in Fig. 1. In Fig. 4, the overlapping

17 and 18, and the section 64 is suitably connected with a chain 67 which passes around sprocket wheels 68 and 69 suitably arranged between the

17 and 18 so that when the sprocket wheel 69 is turned by a handle 7 0 connected therewith, the section 64 is moved under the section to have the projection 71 engage the rear end of the section 65 73 engages the rear end of the crosspiece `19. The sections 64 and 65 havev thereon projections 72 and 73 which engage `with and move the sections 65 and 66 when the handle 70 is turned in the opposite direction to close the rear portion of the compartment.

In the modification of the construction of the vrear portion of the compartment shown in Iiigs. 5 and 6, the hinged together sections 74 have the side portions thereof movably bearing against guides 75 on the walls 17 and have one end thereof suitably connected to the roller 76 which is rotatably mounted. on the walls 17 and have the other end thereof extending to the floor 13 to closethe rear portion of the compartment. The roller 76 may have thereon a bevel pinion `77 1in mesh with a bevel pinion 78 on the upper end of an upright shaft 7 9 vwhich latter has on its lower end a bevel pinion 80 in mesh with a bevel pinion 81 to which is connected a handle 82.` When the handle 82 is turned in the direction indicated by the arrows the roller 76 is turned to wind up the hinged together sections 74 and thereby open the rear portion of the compartment which is disposed on the exterior of the building. Covering plates 83 are preferably secured to the walls 18 and adapted to overhang the side portions of the sections 74. e

It will be seen that the improved bed compartment is comparatively simple in construction and is well adapted to accomplish the objects of the invention.

Though various forms of construction embodying the invention have been illustrated and described, many changes and modifications thereof will occur to those skilled in the art-wherefore the right is reserved to all such changes and modiicationsas do not depart (substantially from the spirit, and scope of the invention as defined in the ap pended claims. i

I claim:

1. A compartment for a bed adapted to extend through an opening in the wall of a building, comprising side walls, suitable adjustable means in the form of a seat for closing the front portion of thecomof the building, adjustable means'including relatively movable sections for closing the rear portion of the compartment which is disposed on the` exterior of the building,

`means operatively connected with the `secpivotally mounted on the side walls, a roller e curtain mounted on the side walls and provided with eyelets, and pins onV the sector plates adapted to fit in said eyelets as set forth. e

2. A compartment for a bed having side walls, adjustable means including relatively movable sections placed on the side Walls for closing the rear portion of the compartment, and means for closing the front p0rtion of the compartment, including sector plates pivotally mounted on the side walls, a spring actuated roller mounted on the side walls, a curtain provided with eyelets and having one end thereof secured to the roller, and having theother end thereof secured to the sector plates, and pins on the sector plates adapted to it in the eyelets when the sector plates are turned as setforth.

3. In a compartment for a bed, the combination of side walls, means including relatively movable sections on the side walls at the rear of the compartment, means operatively connected with said sectionsfor moving the same to open the rear portion of the compartment, sector plates pivotally mounted on thesidewalls, a roller curtain mounted on the side walls and providedwith eyelets, and pins on the sector plates adapted to fit insaid eyelets as set forth.

4. A compartment for a bed having side walls, means including relatively` movable i sections placed on the sidewalls for closing the rear portion of the compartment, sector plates mounted on the side walls, a spring actuated roller mounted on the slde walls," a
