PHILETUSKW. enfrnsorponroaeo, ILLiNo'Is, Assieuon fro nnusntr AND n. n. redsun, or sans BLAUE.
Letters Patent No. 111,339, dated January 3.1, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN SA-SVH-HOLQERS.
The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patentanc'i making part of the same.
To all uvhonttt may concern: v Beit knownthatjI, PHILETUS W. G-Arns, ot' Ghieagoin the county of Cook and State of Illinois,` have invented a-new and Improved Window-Sash Holder; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and enact .description thereof, reference `being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, ,in which- Figure l is a view, partly -in section, showing the inode of applying my holder to a sash and its frame; Figure 2 isa perspective viewV of the holder; Figure?) is avie'w of thel back of the holder; and Figure 4 is a vertical central section through the holder; Figures 4' and 5 show a lnodilication of the fasten- Siinilar letters of lreference, indicate correspomling parts' in the several figures. Y l This. invention relates to an improved holding device 'or' fastening, which is .designed for sustaining wi-ndow-.sashes'at any desiredheight, and also for `locking the same when shut.
'The'nature of my invention 'consists'in a hollowor chamber-ed wedge, having fitted into its chambers two or more anti-friction rollers, and provided with a han-A dle or ingerpiece,`so that when the device is mortsed into the facc of a window-frame and allowed vertical play it will irmlysustain a sash at any desired Aheight above the sill Vby its wedging action against the edge ofthe sash, as will bc hereinafter explained.'
- To enable others skilled inthe .art to understand my invention, I will explain its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing- A represents part of a window-frame, and
B represents part of one vertical rail of a window- Thisjwedge presents, next the edgef of the sash B,- a plain 'or serrated surface s, and also a handlc,'b, whiclrlatter laps over the front 4portion of the sashrail so as to'be readily acted by the finger of one hand, while with the other hand the sash can b e movednp or'down'.
' rlhe wedge is hollow and ehambered, the chambers y being separated by. divisions p, shown in figures 2, 3, ,4, 5, and (i.
Into the chambers anti-friction rollers c c are 1nserted, which may'diierin size, as shown in figs. 1,3, and 4, or they may be oi' equal size, as in figs. 5 and 6,.so that when they bear against the inclined scrface.
of the mortis'e a, as shown in ng. l, the external surface s-of the wedge c is parallel" tol the vertical' edge of the window-sash. y
It will be seen fromthe above description'that the wedge C will drop down byitsown gravity, anda` t the same time, pressoutward against thewindmv.-`
sash, and thus wedge the .sash iirmly; and that by pressing more or less forcibly downward with the hand upon the lip b the wedge will crowd hard against the sash and hold it safely at any` desiredheight.
By a slight upward movement of the wedge, which can be conveniently given with the hand on the lip l1, the sash Ywill be released, and while `the wedge his held up may be freely moved up and down.
I do not claim an inclined recess with a rubber ball `placed in the recess. Nor do I clailn a sliding piece in combinationv with an inclined recess;
Nor do I claim a sliding wedge; but
WhatI doclam as my invention, and desirel to securc by Lettersl Patent, is
The sash holding-device C, formed with a handle, b,
,and two or more chambers, g (j, and furnished with v two ormore rollers, c c, in combination with the inclined recess a a', which is of a greater length than the device' ),all in the 'manner described.
' PHILE'IUS W.. GATES.
IVitnesses GEORGE W; GATES, SETE PALNE, Jn.
