WIT/VE'SS'S ERIK JOHNSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PUSH-MOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
Application filed May 22, 1913. Serial No. 769,240.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERIK JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Push-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in push motors or foot propelled riding devices for children and more particularly to an improved handle construction for such devices; ahandle,non-vibrating, is provided which may be retained rigidly in an upright position for use when the device is used strictly as a push motor and the operator is standing up and means also provided for inclining the handle in the direction of the front or the rear of the device so that in the first inclined position mentioned the handle can be used as a tongue to draw the device along or in the second inclined position mentioned the handle may be grasped by the passenger seated in the vehicle by which he can guide it while the motive power may be supplied by someone pushing at the rear of the machine or by foot power supplied by the passenger.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved push motor. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a portion of the handle. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of Fig. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of-Fig. 3 in the position of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view of Fig. 5 with the parts in an altered position.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1 is the frame of my push motor provided with side traction-wheels 2, 2 and a front wheel 3 and 4 is the seat carried upon sup ports 5 secured to the frame. 6-is a front fork carrying the axle of the front wheel and provided with a bearing 7 for the front end of the frame 1. The upper end of the fork 6 is diminished in diameter and rounded as at 8 which portion is formed with a slot for the reception of a portion of a transverse bar 9 which handle-is pivoted as at 12, 12 to the said fork 6. Above the slots 1Q in the handle 11 said handle is provided with a wood filling or body portion 13 which is formed with a cavity 14 in its lower end for the reception of a portion of a spring 15 the lower end of which rests upon the bar 9 to normally retain the same in the position best illustrated in Fig. 3 showing the handle 11 and fork 6 locked together. In this figure and in full lines in Fig. 1 the handle is shown in upright position in which positon it is rigidly retained by locking means just described and the locking means is such as to be releasable and at the same time while in operative position provides a handle of this class devoid of any vibration due to the operation of the hush motor. To incline the handle forward or to the .position shown at A, dotted, in Fig. 1 the bar 9 is manually raised against the tension of the 'spring 15 until it is out of engagement with the fork 6 when the handle can be moved upon its pivots independently of said fork forward;
in like manner it can be moved backward to B in Fig. 1.
What is claimed is 1. Ina push motor the combination with the frame, of a front fork comprisin a round diminished portion slotted at its ree extremity, a slotted handle pivoted to said fork and locking means carried b said handle for releasable engagement with the slotted portion of said fork.
2; In a push motor the combination with the frame, of a front fork comprising a rounded diminished portion slotted at its free extremity, a slotted handle .pivoted to said fork, a body portion, formed in said handle, above its slotted portion, formed with a cavity, a spring disposed in said body portion and 'a bar normally disposed in the slotted portions of said handle and fork in frictional engagement with said spring.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two subscriblng witnesses.
. ERIK JOHNSON.
