Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 5, 1914. ,Serial No. 843,131.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Joznrn 'PARADoWIsH, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Pole Heads, of which the following is a specificatio This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trolley pole heads.
An object of the invention is to provide a head for trolley poles with a trolley wire engaging portion to positively engage the wire and without the use of the usual trolley wheel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a head for trolley poles, in which the head is formed of a pair of pivoted arms of the plier type with an opening beyond the pivot point of the arms for the reception of a trolley wireand carrying at their outer ends opposed contact jaws with both ends of the contacting faces beveled to enable the same to pass a crossing wire.
With the above and general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing by like characters designating corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a trolley pole provided with my improved head. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail end elevational view of the outer end of the head.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing which shows the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a trolley pole of the usual construction and for the purpose of. illustrating the use and operation of the device, a trolley wire is indicated as at 11.
The pole head comprises in detail an arm 12 having the inner end 13 thereof of a shape similar to the pole 10 and is secured thereto by a suitable fastening means as at 1%. The arm 12 is angularly bent at a point intermediate its ends as clearly shown in Fig. l and carries upon the outerend thereof a head 15 having the outer face ends thereof beveled as at 16. A bolt 17 passes through the arm 12 at a point adjacent the outer end thereof and has pivotally mounted thereon a second arm 18 continuing outwardly-1n a manner similar to the arm 12 and carrying uponits outer end a head 19 that engages the head 15 and is beveled as at 20 on its opposite face ends opposed to the beveled portions 16. The arm 18 is an gularly disposed as shown in Fig. 2 and is apertured adjacent its outer end as at2l for the reception of a ring 22 carrying a coil spring 23, the other end of said coil spring carrying a similar ring 22 mounted in the opening 2 1- provided in the arm 12. The spring tends to normally hold the heads 15 and 19 in contact with one another. For the reception of the trolley wire 11, the arms 12 and 18 are provided with the jaw faces 25 through which passes the trolley wire, and it is to be noted that at all times the pole head will be in contact with the wire due to the movement of the vehicle Patented Sept. 29, 1914.

The mechanism for separating the jaws 25 and heads 15 and 19 in positioning the same on the wire 11 comprises in detail an arm 26 secured as at 27 to the end portion 13 of the arm 12 and angularly disposed as shown in Fig. 2, the outer end of the arm 26 formed to provide a housing 28 for the re ception of a revolubly mounted sheave 29. The end ofthe arm 18 is provided with an opening 30 for the reception of one end of a rope 31 which passes through the housing 28 and over the sheave 29 to a point adjacent the oar.

In positioning the head upon the wire 11, the strain on the rope 31 will move the outer end of the arm 18 toward the sheave 29, which movement will cause the outer end of the arm 18 to move on its pivot 17 and separate the heads 15 and 19 and the jaw faces 25. Whenthe device has been properly positioned on the wire 11, the strain on the rope is released and the spring 23 in asserting itself will move inwardly the outer end of the arm 18 to close the heads 15 and 19, with the jaws -25 inclosing the wire. By providing the front and rear ends of the heads 15 and 19 with opposed beveled faces, the device is permitted to freely pass a cross wire or other obstruction.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to confine myself to the exact details of construction shown, as various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts as shown may be had without of the heads, a spring connecting the inner ends of the arms and adapted to bring the heads into contact, a third arm secured at one end to the first-named arm, a pulley 'revolubly mounted in the other end of said arm, and a rope passing over said pulley and connected at one end to the secondnamed arm for controlling the movement of said head.
