THE NORRIS PETERS c0" PHOTO-LITHCL, WASHINGTON, D. C.
SAUL GnaBorr, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, SAUL GRABorr, a citizen of the United states, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Cigar-Cu tters, of which the following is a specification. i
j the convenience ofthe owner.
The invention. consists in thespecific con-.
struction and arrangement of parts described and claimed whereby the release and manipulation of the cigar cutter blade is sim-,
plified nd rendered more convenientand effective; whereby one or more auxiliary blades are combined with the-cigar clipping device; and whereby the rivets which secure the parts together are madeto perform additional functions, all as hereinafterfully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l,
is an elevation of my improved device taken on the, side on which the cigar cutter is lo cated; Fig; 2, an elevation with the side plate removed, and the cigar cutter blade in locked.-
position; Fig. 3, a likeview with the cigar cutter in released position, and ready for action, the fingers of the user being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 4: is an edge view of the device; Fig. 5, an elevation of the reverse side of the device,on which the knife blades are located; Fig. 6, an elevation with this side plate removed. Fig. 7, is an elevation of my improved device with both blades open and the cigarcutter released.'
In the construction shown the drawings a, designates the center plate of the structure and a, and a the parallel side plates, all three plates being of the same general configuration, including the coinciding circular openings b, for the cigar tip.
central plate a, by the shank s, of the du plex spring s,said shank being positioned.
0, is formed to straddlethe lateral shank s,
' plate (1 is mounted another duplex spring of the duplex spring 8, as shown in Figs.
Specification of Letters Patent.
My improvements .relate to devices for; clipping off the ends of cigars, and known technically as cigar cutters, adapted for personaluse, and to be carried in the pocket for,

V CIGAR-CUTTER.

the cutter blade 0, which normally closes the cigar. tip aperture 6, being held in such closedposition within and between the middle plate a, and the side plate a, by a latch (Z, pivoted on the rivet T and controlled by the free end 5 of the duplex spring .9. That is to say, the said end .9 of the. spring 8, bears constantly against the short arm d, of the latchcZ tending constantly to hold it against the rivet 7- which acts in this respect as a stop or shoulder to limit the thrust of the latch under the pressure of the spring .9.
In this. normal position the hooked end (P, ofzthe latch (Z,
will engage the shoulder c,
on the cigarcutterblade C, if the latter is depressed -the edge 0 of the blade c, acting as a cam surface against the ends 6Z2, of the latch d, to force back said latch against the resistance of the spring arm 8 during the depression of the plate 0. The latter tends constantly to spring open into the positlonshown in Fig. 3, by reason of the engagement of its shoulder 0 with the end 8 of the spring s,said end 8 of the spring also'acting as a stop to limit the outward thrust of the blade plate 0, when the shoulder 0 on the cutter plate contacts therewith as; shown in said Fig. 3, which also illustrates in dotted lines a convenient method of holding and manipulating the device single handed. That is to say, for instance, by grasping the device in the right hand between the index finger and the thumb, both the latch (Land the cutter blade 0, are in convenient control of the user, so that by pressing the roughened end of the short arm d, of the latch (Z, the cutter blade may be released into the position shown in Fig. 3, to be; depressed by the thumb and automatically locked in closed position by thelatch cZ,-the depression of the blade plate C, of course, causing the cutting blade 0, to clip off the tip end of a cigar previously inserted in the openings b. This utilization of the short arm (l of the latch d, as a means for The side plate a, is spaced apart from the I from the roughened contact surface ofthe latch to insure the requisite leverage to release the cutter plate with but slight exertion on the art of the user.
Between t e central plate a, and the side e, the basic shank e, of which is secured by the rivets r 1*, said shank 6, thus acting as a spacing block between the said two plates a, a It will be noted incidentally in this connection that the rivet 7' also acts as the fulcrum for the latch d, while the rivet r acts as the stop rest therefor as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.- The ends of the attenuated arms, 6 c of the duplex spring c, act as controllers for the blades h, h, engaging with the angular shanks of'the latter and holding themin prescribed positions until forcibly turned upon their pivots 9", 4, against the resistance of said spring arms as in the case of ordinary pocket knife blades &c. These pivots r, 1, also act as rivets to secure the plates a, a, a together at that end of the device; and the blades h, h, may be adapted for use as auxiliary cigar cutters, as finger nail blades or like uses, one, if preferred, being roughened or vformed for use as a file, as h; or either or both of the blades may be specially shaped for other particular purposes and uses, as may be foundmost expedient in adapting the device to the requirements of trade.
The arms a 41 of the spring are positioned against undue spread by the rivets 0*,4 by which the cigar cutter blade spring I s, is secured in position, said rivets thus performing a double function. By thus utilizing the rivets 7", r r 7", r each for a double function I am enabled to greatly simplify and cheapen the structure of my device, at the same time rendering it compact," durable and effective.
The ease with which the cigar tip cutting mechanism may be manipulated by one hand, leaving the other free to hold and present the cigar for cutting, I believe to be a distinctive-result of my special construction and arrangement of parts as compared with the prior state of the art, and it is a feature of commercial importance.
By providing one or more knife blades in conjunction with the cigar ti cutter I greatly increase the usefulness of the device without impairing its utility as a cigar cutter, but rather increasin such special utility, as it is frequently desirable to cut off the end of a cigar the tip of which is too thick for insertion in the openings 12. Furthermore, one or more blades are always conveniently available for an infinite variety of uses,
ing or trimming finger nails, cutting cord &c.,-the devlce as a whole forming an ideal pocket implement for masculine wear and use,
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure byLetters Patent is 1. In a device of thecharacter designated, parallel plates having tip-receiving openings, a pivoted blade, a spring pressing said blade to open position, andia latch'to' hold the bladeiclosed, said springhaving an ex tension operating said latch and the latch disposed at an angle to the blade and coop crating directly with the spring and blade.
'2. Ina device of the character designated, parallel plates, a cigar 'tip cutter blade mov ably mounted between said plates, a spring pressing said blade to open position, and a pivoted spring having an extension operating said spring, and the blade having a cain surface engaging the latch to force it back against the pressure of the spring.
3. In a device of the character designated, plates, a cigar tip cutter blade pivoted therebetween', a spring pressing the blade to open position, a latch to hold the blade closed, said spring having an extension operating said latch,"and the blade having acam surface for engagement with the latch, and means between the plates in the path of the latch to limit the thrust of the latter under the influenceof the spring.
as for sharpening pencils, clean-V latch to hold said'blade closed said i 4:. In a deviceof the character designated,
the combination of parallel plates formed a duplex sprin inwith cigar tip openings v the shank of terposed between them,
w hich acts as a spacing block, a cigar tip cutter blade fulcrumed on a rivet between said plates and engagingwithone end of said duplex spring and a latch pivoted on a rivet between said plates and resting normally a ainst another rivet there-between and conspring, and adapted to engage with a shoulder on the'said cutter blade, for the pur pose describeda y p SAUL [1 s] WVitnesses: p
