Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LANSING ONDERDONK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looper- Operating Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to looper operating mechanism for sewing machines, and has for its object to simplify said mechanism and render same more durable and more efficient for high speed work.
The invention consists in the novel parts, improvements hereinafter shown and described.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front side elevation of the lower portion of a machine, embodying my invention, the bed plate being removed to more clearly show the construction. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, the needle and presser foot being omitted. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation of the parts as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows in side and front elevation, a needle, looper and a work support, with the looper at the forward end of its stroke; Fig. 5 is a similar view at the time when the point of the needle is passing the body of the looper.
In the drawings, the base plate 1 has rising therefrom the usual overhanging arm 2, on which is pivotally mounted a needle lever, having a depending needle lever extension 3, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The needle bar, the needle 5, the presser foot 6, the feed dog 7, and the feed bar 8, are all of the usual construction, and will not require further description. The looper 9 is mounted in a looper carrier 11, which in turn is carried by the looper support 12. Said looper support 12 is freely mounted in the brackets 13 and 1 1, fixed to the base plate 1, so that said support may oscillate and be moved longitudinally.
The looper support in the present embodiment of my invention, has depending from its forward end, an arm 15, which is firmly clamped to said looper support. carries a stud 16, which is provided on its outer end with a ball 17. The main shaft 18 has at its forward end a crank arm 19,
carrying a ball stud 20. The link 21 engages the studs 20 and 17, and communicates to the looper support an oscillating motion. Owing to the ball and socket connection between the link and the studs, the looper support is capable of endwise movement. A collar 22 is fixed to the opposite end of the looper support. Freely turning on said looper support, is a collar 23 having arms 24, 24, between which is pivoted the head 25 of a link 26, which at its opposite end, is pivoted to a rock arm 27, at the point 29. The collar 23 is secured to said looper support by a detachable collar 28. This connection between the link 26 and the looper support, allows said looper support to be oscillated, but all longitudinal movements of the link, will be transmitted to the looper support, thus moving the same longitudinally of its axis. The rock arm 27, is pivoted to the head of the machine at 30 and is connected by a link 31 to the needle lever extension 3.
Rigidly secured to the lower portion of the needle lever extension 3, is an arm 32 having at its lower end thread guides for the looper thread. Said arm operates to control the slack formed in the looper thread on the rearward movement of the looper. A thread controlling cam 33 is secured to the looper support at a point adjacent the bracket 14. A thread wire 36, secured to said bracket 14, has thread guides 34 and 35, through which the looper thread is led from the slack thread controller 32, on its way to the looper. The thread controller 33 serves as an auxiliary thread controller moving into contact with the looper thread passing through the thread guides 34 and 35 on the forward movement of the looper, and thus taking up the slack that would otherwise be formed in the looper thread at this time.
The pivotal connection between the link 31 and the rock shaft 27, and the pivotal connection between the needle lever 3 and the Said arm link 31, are in line with the pivotal point of the needle lever extension at the time the looper reaches the forward ortion of its stroke. These parts are so timed that the pivotal connection between the needle lever extension and the link 31, moves slightly beyond the line referred to. The result is that the looper is given first a rapid lateral movement followed by a slow lateral movement and a dwell at the forward portion of the stroke of the looper.
The looper having the combined lateral and forward movement is moved substantially across the path of the needle as it moves forward and is given a dwell at the forward end of its stroke, so that the eye of the looper is held well to the left of the needle as viewed in Figs. 1 and 4. The looper thread therefore, running from the eye of the looper to the previous interlocking of the threads, is held well to the left of the path-of the needle as viewed in said figures. After the point of the needle has aassed the looper thread, the looper is imme iately retracted so that the needle passes between the looper body and the looper thread as shown in Fig. 5. It will be seen therefore that the looper moves back and forth in substantially the same path and the looper thread properly positioned so that the needle will with certainty, pass between the looper thread, and the body of the looper.
The slack thread cont-rolling mechanism described herein is of special advantage in high speed machines of the character disclosed, but said controlling mechanism is not claimed herein as the same forms the sub- 'ect matter of my application Serial Numer 387,991 filed of even date herewith.
Various minor changes may obviously be made in the construction set forth in detail without departing from the main principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A looper mechanism for sewing machines, including in combination, a main shaft, a looper, a looper support therefor, a needle lever extension, means operated from the main shaft for oscillating said looper and means operated from the needle lever extension for moving said looper laterally, said means for oscillating the looper and moving the same laterally, including devices to move it backward and forward in substantially the same path.
2. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, a threadcarrying looper, a support for said threadcarrying looper, means for positively oscillating said looper support, and means for positively moving said looper support laterally in a direction parallel with the axis of the looper support, said means for moving the looper support laterally and for oscillating the looper support being so timed relative to each other as to move said looper for ward and back in substantially the same path on one side of the needle, the lateral movement of said looper carrying the looper thread to the opposite side of the needle from the path of travel of the looper.
3. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, a threadcarrying looper, a support for said threadcarrying looper, means for positively oscillating said looper support, and means for positively moving said looper support laterally in a direction parallel with the axis of the looper support, said means for moving the looper support laterally and for oscillating the looper support being so timed relative to each other as to move said looper forward and back in substantially the same path on one side of the needle, the lateral movement of said looper carrying the looper thread to the opposite side of the needle from the path of travel of the looper, said looper being curved on the face thereof adjacent the needle to form a clearance space for the needle.
i. A sewing machine including in combination a stitch forming mechanism, comprising a needle, a looper, said looper having a curved face adjacent to the path of the needle, means for oscillating said looper, and means for moving said looper laterally comprising a rock arm device for operating the same, and giving to said looper, an extended dwell at the forward end of its lateral stroke, said means for oscillating the looper and said means for moving the looper laterally being timed, so as to move said looper forward and back in substantially the same path.
5. A sewing machine including in combination a stitch forming mechanism, comprising a needle and a needle lever extension, a looper, a looper support, means for oscillating said looper support whereby said looper is moved into and out of the needle loop, and independent means for moving said looper support longitudinally, whereby said looper is moved laterally during its 0scillation, eomprisin a rock arm, a link connected thereto, and iaving a universal connection with said looper support, and means connected with said needle lever extension for oscillating said rock arm.
6. A sewing machine including in combination a stitch forming mechanism, comprising a needle, a needle lever and a needle lever extension, a looper, a support therefor, means for oscillating said support, and independent means for moving sald looper laterally, comprising a rock arm, a link con necting said rock arm and said looper support and a second link connecting said rock arm and needle lever extension.
7. A looper mechanism for sewing machines, including in combination, a main shaft, a looper, a looper support therefor, a needle lever extension, means operated from the main shaft for operating said looper, a link connected to said looper support, and
means intermediate said link and said needle 10 lever extension including a rock arm for moving said looper laterally.
