Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LANSING ONDEBDONK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looper- Operating Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a descript on, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in sewing machines, and while as to some of its features it may be used for various purposes, said improvements are more particularly adapted to machines for making chain stitches.
The object of my invention is to improve and simplify in certain respects, the looper operating mechanism whereby the looper is given a difierential'movement.
My invention consists in the novel parts, improvements and arrangements hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanyin drawings which form a part of this speci cation, P have illustrated one embodiment of my invention, the same serving in connection with the description herein, to illustrate the principles thereof.
Figure 1 isa front elevation of the lower portion of a sewing machine, embodyingmy improvements the bed plate being removed to more clearly shOW the looper operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the parts operating the looper in a different position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my improved looper operating mechanism, certain parts in this view being broken away and shown in section.
In the drawings the base plate 1, the overhanging arm 2, the needle lever extension 3, the needle bar 4, the presser foot 5, the needle 6, and the feed bar 7 are all of the usual construction, and will not require further description.
The looper 8 is mounted on a looper carrier-9, fixedly secured to a looper support 10 by a clamping screw 11. The looper sup port 10 is loosely mounted in brackets 12 and 13, carried by the base plate 1, so that said looper upport is capable not only of being oscillated, but of being moved longitudinally. The means for moving the looper thread is led in passing to the looper.
support as shown in the present embodiment of my invention, comprises a sleeve 1 which is clamped to the looper support 10, a rock shaft 15, which is pivoted to asupport 16 rising from the bed plate 1 and has one of its arms 17, loosely connected to said sleeve 14. This arm 17 has a split head which freely carries a ball 18, having an opening to receive a stud 19 projecting from the sleeve 14. The rock shaft 15, is oscillated by a link 20, which has a universal connection 21 with the arm 22 of said rock shaft. The link 20 at its opposite end has a universal connection 23, with an arm 24 of a rock shaft pivoted at 25 to a plate 26, mounted on the head of the machine. The opposite end of said rock shaft is pivotally connected to a link 27, which in turn is pivoted to the needle lever extension 3.
It is to be noted that the axis of. the rock shaft 15 is arranged at right angles to and at one side of the looper support 10, and therefore the oscillation of said rock shaft will not only oscillate the looper support 10, but will cause said support to move longitudinally. The result of this movement is that the looper in moving forward to take the needle loop is alSO moved laterally and after the said looper has entered the needle loop, it will be moved laterally across he path of the needle, the looper being slightly curved so as to permit thelooper to have such movement. This lateral movement of the looper spreads the looper thread loop for the entrance of the needle on its downward stroke. The arrangement of the pivotal connections between the link 27, the needle lever extension 3, and the rock shaft 28, is such that as the looper reaches the forward end 7 r of its stroke said pivotalconnections are in alinement with the pivot of the needle lever extension, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A further movement of the needle lever extension to a position shown in dotted lines in said figure, will give little or no movement to the looper and therefore the looper has an extended dwell at the forward end of its stroke.
The needle lever extension 3 has rigidly secured thereto, a slack thread controlling arm 29, which is provided With thread openings 30. The feed bar 31 has secured thereto a thread finger 32 around which. the A thread guide 33 is also secured to the sleeve 14 through which the looper support is oscillated. This thread guide 33, moving toward and from the path of the thread leading from the slack thread controller 29 to the thread finger 82, serves as an auxiliary thread controller, taking up the slack thread caused by the forward movement of the slack thread controller 29. It will thus be seen that the slack thread controller 29 and the auxiliary thread controller 33 cooper, ate in keeping the looper thread taut dur in" the entire movement of the looper. The th 'eati finger moving with the feed bar. operates to pull off from the supply thread which is used by the looper in forming the stitch. It will be observed that when the length of the stitch is increased or decreased, that there will be a corresponding increase or decrease in the amount of thread pulled off for the loo-per.
Theslack thread controlling mechanism described herein is of special advantage in high speed machines of the character disclosed, but said controlling mechanism is not claimed herein as the same forms the sub'ect matter of my application Serial Nufn'ber 337,991 filed of even date herewith.
Various minor changes may obviously be made in the construction set forth in detail without departing from the main principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, a looper, a loo or support, a link, means for reciprocatiri'g' said link in the direction of its length, means for connecting said link to said ld'op'er support, said connecting means being so constructed as to oscillate sail looper support about its axis and to move said looper support longitudinally of its axis.
.2; A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, a looper, a support therefor, a link, means for reciprocating said link back and forth in the direction of its length, means for connecting said link to said looper support, said means construdted so as to oscillate said looper support and move the same longitudinall y of its axis for moving said looper into and oiit of the needle loo-n, said means for reciprocating the looper being constructed so as to give said looper an extended dwell at the forward end of the stroke.

A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillat ing looper, 'a support therefor, a link, a rock shaft connected to said link and to said looper support, whereby said looper support is oscillated about its axis and moved longitildinally of its axis, and means for reciprocating said link including a rock shaft and devices for oscillating same, whereby said link is given an extended dwell in its forward position; substantially as described.
8. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillating looper, a support therefor, a link, a rock shaft connected to said link and to said looper support, the axis 'of said rock shaft being arranged at right angles to the axis of the looper support, whereby said looper support is oscillated and moved longitudinailly, and means for reciprocating said link including a rock shaft and devices for 0s cillating same, whereby said link is given an extended dwell in its forward position; substantially as described.
9. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillating looper, a support therefor, a link, means intermediate the link and the looper support, whereby said looper support is oscillated about its axis and moved longitudinally of its axis and means for reciprocating said link, including a rock shaft, a link connected thereto, and a member connected to said link for operating said rock shaft; substantially as described.
10. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillating looper, a support therefor, a link, a rock shaft connected to said link and to said looper support, whereby said looper support is oscillated about its axis and moved longitudinally of its axis, and means for reciprocating said link including a rock shaft, a link connected thereto and a member connected to said link for operating said rock shaft; substantially as described.
11. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillating looper, a support therefor, a link, a rock shaft connected to said link and to said looper support, the axis of said rock shaft being arranged at right angles to the axis of the looper support, whereby said looper support is oscillated about its axis and moved longitudinally thereof, and means for reciprocating said link including a rock shaft, a link connected thereto, and a member connected to said link for operating said rock shaft; substantially as described.
12. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillating looper, a support therefor, a link, a rock shaft connected to said link and to said looper support for moving said support longitudinally of its axis and for oscillating the same, means for reciprocating said link including a rock shaft and devices for operating the same, the axes of the two rock shafts being arranged at right angles to each other; substantially as described.
13. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillating looper, a support therefor, a link, a rock shaft connected to said link, and to said looper support the axis of said rock shaft being at right angles to the looper support whereby said support is moved long1tudi nally of its axis, and oscillated means for reciprocating said link, including a rock shaft, and devices for operating the same, the axes of the two rock shafts being arranged at right angles to each other; substantially as described.
14. A looper mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillating looper, a looper support therefor, a link, means intermediate the link and the looper support, whereby said looper support is oscillated and moved longitudinally, a rock shaft to which the opposite end of said link is connected, a needle lever and a link intermediate the needle lever and said last named rock shaft; substantially as described.
15. A looper operating mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillating looper, a looper support therefor, a link, a rock shaft connected to said link and to said looper support, a second rock shaft connected to the opposite end of said link, a needle lever and a link intermediate the needle lever and said last named rock shaft; substantially as described.
16. A looper operating mechanism for sewing machines including in combination, an oscillating looper, a su port therefor, a link, a rock shaft connecte to said link and to said looper support, the axis of said rock shaft being arranged at right angles to the axis of the looper support, a second rock shaft connected to the opposite end of said link, a needle lever and a link intermediate the needle lever and said last named rock shaft; substantially as described.
