Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LANSING ONDERDONK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of'New York,
Stateof New York, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Blindstitch Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the agcompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked My invention relates to new and useful improvements in blind stitch sewing machines, and has for its object to provide mechanism for operating the spreader wherein said spreader is given positive movements both in the forward and backward direction, directly from the main shaft in the overhanging arm.
A further object of the invention is to provide mechanism for operating the looper, of an overseaming blind stitch mechanism directly from the horizontal shaft, extending through the overhanging arm.
Still further objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the forward end of a machine embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, with parts in section and with parts removed showing a sewing machine embodying my invention.
The bed plate 1 of the machine, has rising therefrom a standard 2, .on which is supported the usual overhanging arm 3. The work support 4 is also supported on the standard 2, and carries a crimping member 5 at its forward end, which is also provided with feeding teeth, to engage and move the fabric. .7
The main shaft 6, extends through the overhanging arm, and is operated in any suitable manner. The needle 7 is supported by a needle lever 8 pivoted at the lower end of the feeding portion of the overhanging arm, and is oscillated by means of a link 9 in any suitable manner.
Cooperating with the'needle 7 1s a looper 10, which is carried by a looper support 11 mounted in a bearing 12, secured to the overhanging arm by suitable screws 13.
The looper support 10 has an arm 14 secured to its upper end, which arm is provlded wlth a ball stud 15. A link 16 has a universal connection at its lower end with the ball stud 15, and at its upper end said 7 link 16 has a universal connection with a crank arm 17 mounted on the forward end of the shaft 6. The universal connection at the upper end of said link '16 preferably comprises spaced ears 18 between which the link 16 is pivoted and said ears are connect A spreader support 26. The shaft 24 is provided with an arm l 27 which is slotted at its forward end to engage a block 28 which block isv mounted on a pivot pin passing through the arm 23. The shaft 24 at its upper end is provided with a laterally extending arm 30 which carries a ball stud 31 at its outer end. The operation of my device will be obvious from the above description. work-is supported by the crimping member 5 and held thereon by suitable presser feet in the usual manner. The needle 7 moves forward through the fabric bent over the crimping member 5 and the, looper 10 is oscillated through the link 16 and the arm 17 on the main shaft 6, so that said looper passes through the needle loop and carries its own loop into position for the entrance of the spreader. Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of an overhanging arm, a needle mounted thereon, a work support, a crimping member carried thereby, a
main shaft in the overhanging arm, a crank carried by said main shaft at the forward end thereof, a looper supported in a bearing inclined to the vertical and mounted on the overhanging arm, and devices between said crank and said looper for operating said looper.
2. The combination of. an overhanging arm, a needle mounted thereon, a work sup port, a crimping member carried thereby, a main shaft in the overhanging arm, a crank carried by said main shaft at. the forward end thereof, a looper supported in a bearing inclined to the vertical and mounted on the overhanging arm, devices between the crank and said looper for operating the same, a spreader, a support therefor mounted on the overhanging arm and extending at an angle to a vertical plane containing the longitudinal aXis of the work support, an eccentric carried by the main shaft adjacent the forward end thereof, and means cooperating with said eccentric for oscillating said spreader.

The combination of a work support, a crimping member carried by said work support, an overhanging arm, a needle mounted on said overhanging arm, and reciprocating back and forth across said crimping member, a spreader cooperating with said needle, a spreader support carrying said spreader, said spreader support being mounted on the overhanging arm, a main shaft located in said overhanging arm, an eccentric on the main shaft adjacent the forward end thereof, a second shaft mounted on said overhanging arm, and operatively connected with said eccentric, and means for oscillating said spreader support from said second shaft.
5. The combination with a work support, of an overhanging arm, a spreader mounted on said overhanging arm, a main shaft 10- cated in said overhanging arm, an eccentric carried thereby, a second shaft mounted on said overhanging arm, an eccentric strap cooperating with said eccentric and having universal connection with said second shaft, an arm carried by said second shaft and operatively connected to said spreader.
6. The combination with a work support, a spreader, a spreader support mounted on said overhanging arm, a main shaft in said overhanging arm, a second shaft substantially parallel with the spreader support, and operatively connected therewith, and means for-operating said second shaft from said main shaft.

The combination with a work support of an overhanging arm, a spreader, a spreader support therefor, mounted on said overhanging arm, a main shaft located. in said overhanging arm, a second shaft mounted on said overhanging arm substantially parallel with the spreader support and operatively connected there with, an eccentric on said main shaft and operatively connected with said second shaft. 7
8. The combinationwith an overhanging arm, a needle mounted thereon, a looper mounted on said overhanging arm, a main shaft in said overhanging arm, a crank arm carried by said main shaft and operatively connected with saidlooper, a spreader mounted on said overhanging. arm, and an eccentric carried by said main shaft and operatively connected with said spreader.
9. The combination with an overhanging arm, a needle mounted. thereon, a-looper supported in an inclined bearing upon said overhanging arm, a main shaft located in said overhanging arm, a crank carried thereby, devices between. said crank and said looper for operating the latter, a spreader mounted in an inclined bearing upon said overhanging arm, and: devices between said spreader and said main shaft for operating the same.
10. The combination with an overhanging arm, a needle mounted thereon, a looper supported in an inclined bearing upon said overhanging arm, a main shaft located in said overhanging arm, a crank carried thereby, devices betweensaid crank and said looper for operating the latter, a spreader mounted in an inclined bearing upon said overhanging arm, a second shaft mounted on said overhanging arm, substantially parallel with said inclined bearing, and operatively connected. to said spreader, and means for oscillating said second shaft.
11. The combination with an overhanging arm, a needle mounted thereon, a looper supported in an inclined bearing upon said overhanging arm, a main shaft located in said overhanging arm, a crank carried thereby, devices between said crank and said looper for operating the latter, a spreader mounted in an inclined bearing upon said overhanging arm, a second shaft mounted on said overhanging arm substantially parallel With said inclined bearing andoperatively connected tosaid spreader, an eccentric on the main shaft, an eccentric strap cooperating therewith and operatively connected to said second shaft.
12. The combination of a Work support, a crimping member carried thereby, an overhanging arm, a needle mounted on said over.- hanging arm, a main shaft in said coverhanging arm, a looper sup-port carried by ing arm, a spreader mounted to oscillate in said spreader support, and means for connecting said spreader to said main shaft In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
