V WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
eoonnrcn MAYO, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE H.
NOBLE, OF sAME PLACE.
SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,235, dated January 10, 1882.
Application filed April 21, 1881. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GooDRIoH A. MAYO, of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled it the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to sewing-machines, and especially to that class of machines wherein the shuttle-carrier and feed-operating mechanism is driven by means of eccentrics on the main or needle shaft. V
In the drawings, Figure] is an isometric view of iny machine, showing the shuttle and feed operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the feed-regulating device, showing the. manner of adjusting the same for longer or shorter stitch. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the feed-bar. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the needle-shaft, showing the manner of connecting 2 the upright pivoted lever and the upright pitman to their respective eccentrics.
A is the main or needle shaft, which is provided at one of its ends with two eccentrics, a and b, the eccentric a operating the upright pivoted lever B and the eccentric 12 operating the upright pitman (J. The eccentric a is connected, as shown in the drawings Figs. 1 and 4', with the upright pivoted lever B by means of a ball-aml-sockctjoint, .c, which is connected with a ring or band, at, which surrounds said eccentric a, this ring or band d and ball-andsocket joint 0 acting as a pitman connection between the eccentric a and lever B, and giving the lever B a horizontal reciprocating mo- 40 tion only, it being pivoted to the upright or standard of the machine by means of a belt. which passes through said standard, and also through a hole or hearing in the lever B. The lower end of the lever B operates the shuttledriving mechanism by means of suitable connection. The eccentric b is connected with and operates the pitnian O in the usual manner, said upright pitmau being slightly bent or turned at its upper end, so as to allow it to clear the bolt which passes through the standard.
The lower end of the 'pitman (lis provided with an anti-friction roller, D, which operates in a slot cut in an arm, E, said arm in turn being fastened to the feed-actuating shaft F. The lower end of the pitman O is also provided I with a link, G, which in turn is connected in a suitable manner with an adjusting-screw, H, and acts, in connection with said adjustingscrew, to regulate the feed by shortening or lengthening the leverage by sliding the end of the pitman (J nearer to or farther from the shaft F. The shaft F is provided at its other end with another arm, m, said arm m being in turn provided with a pin, 0, which acts, by means of the slot at in the feed-bar p, to operate the feed s. As the shaft F oscillates the pin 0 on'the arm at operates to first raise the feed-harp by means of the slot n, which is cut diagonally in the feed-bar p, and after said pin has operated to raise the feedbar the pin 0, coming in contact with the end of the slot a, pushes it forward and feeds the goods to the needle of the machine. On the return of the arm m the pin first acts to lower the feed- 7 5 bar 11, and then,- coming in contact with the other end of the slot n, it acts to draw the feedbar back. Thus, as the shaft F oscillates, the feed-bar is given a vertical and lateral motion, and makes what is known as a four-motion 8o feed.
What I claim is 1. In a sewing-machine, the combination, with the oscillating shaftprovided with a crankarm, E, secured to said shaft and having an elongated slot formed therein, and a pitman, 0, provided at its lower end with a pin that engages in the elongated slot of the arm E, of the inclined link Gr, attached at one end to the lower end of'the pitman and at its opposite end to an adjusting-screw, H, substantial] y as described.
2. The combination, with the oscillating feed-shaft, the slotted arm connected therewith, a pitmau having a roller-bearing in the 5 slot of said arm and adapted to actuate the feed-shaft, of a link pivoted to the lower end of the pitman and an adjusting-screw pivoted to one end of the link and arranged to extend above the table of the machine, substantially as set forth. i
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
