sewing machines, and more especially to a sewing machine having a vertical looper support with a looper moving substantially in a horizontal plane, such as shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 382,899, filed July 9th, 1907, although from certain aspects, it is obvious that my invention may be applied to machines of other types. p The object of my invention is to provide a take up mechanism which shall be durable, simple in construction, and especially adapted for cooperation with a looper moving.

My invention consists-in the parts, arrangements and improvements hereinafter shown, described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration, one embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a top plan view ofthe work support of a sewing machine, with parts broken away andparts in section to show a looper mechanism with my proved take up cam applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with parts broken away to show the looper and take up cam. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the looper support, with my take up cam applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the thread guides cooperating with the take up cam.
The bed plate 1 of the sewing machine, is of the usual construction, and has rising therefrom, the overhanging arm 2. Supported upon said overhanging arm, is the usual needle mechanism. The looper 3, as herein shown, is mounted on a vertical looper support 4:, which is mounted in suitable lugs 5, 5, formed in a bracket 6, se-
cured to the under side of the machine.
The needle is represented at 7, in Fig. 1,
and it will be seen that the looper in its oscillation, will move in a curved path close to the needle, so that the point of said looper will enter the needle loop and pass around into a position so that the looper thread running from the eye of the looper to the previous needle puncture will be properly positioned for the needle to pass between said looper thread and the looper body. Said looper in the present illustration of my invention,is oscillated from a lever 8 which is connected to an arm 9, secured to the looper support by means of a link 10. The lever 8 is oscillated from a link 11, through suitable connections with the main shaft.
.My improved take up cam 12, is shaped preferably substantially in the form of an ellipse and is secured to the looper support, at one end of the majoraxis of said ellipse. The curve at the other end of said ellipse slightly sharpened as shown in the drawings.
The take up cam in the present embodiment of my invention, is shown as formed of a narrow continuous strip for the sake of lightness, although it is obvious that said cam member may be a solid disk. The take up cam 12 is preferably secured to a collar 13, which in turn may be secured to the looper support, so as to swing therewith. Said take-up cam is adjustably secured to the looper support by a screw 13.
Cooperating with the take up cam, is a thread guiding member 14, which has its shank perforated as at 15, whereby the same maybe secured by suitable screws to the under side of the work support. Said member 14 is provided with forwardly extending spaced arms 16, 17. The arm 16 is provided with a thread eye 18 and a thread slot 19, leading thereto. The arm 17 is provided with a thread eye and a thread slot 21 leading thereto. The thread slots 19 and 21 are preferably disposed in opposite directions, so as to properly hold the thread in the thread eye. The thread for the looper as it comes from the supply, is led through a thread eye 22 in a guiding plate 23 set into a recess in the work support, and then along underneath said plate to the forward end thereof. The thread passes from the forward end of the thread guide or coverplate 23, to the thread guide 20 in the member 17, and thence through the thread guide 18 in the member 16, to the looper. It will therefore, be seen that all pull on thethread from the stitching point,"
will tend to draw the thread into the thread guides in the member 14. Thethread guiding member 14: is preferably so located relative to the take up cam 12, that said cam oscillates between the members 16 and 17 and is thus brought into contact with the thread passing through the thread eyes 18 i and 20.
As the looper movesforward into the needle loop, the arm 12 of the take up cam, will engage the thread and force the same away from a straight line connecting the thread guides 18 and 20, until the nose 12 of the thread cam, slips by the thread. As the looper moves in the opposite direction, the
arm 12 of the take up cam will engage the thread and push the same away from the thread eyes, until the nose 12 of the cam again slips. from the thread. As the looper moves forward, therefore, the take up cam engages the looper thread, and as the looper thread is under. strain at this time, by reason of the forward movement of the looper, a small amount of thread is drawn from the supply. As the looper is retracted, the take up cam again engages the thread and takes up the slack in the looper thread and also assists in drawing the looper thread properly for the setting u so that said thread guiding member may be adjusted toward and from the axis of the looper, about which the take up cam oscillates for the purpose of varying the amount of thread controlled.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a thread carrying looper, of a take-up cam therefor moving about a vertical axis, thread guides cooperating with said take-up cam, and means for moving said cam in unison with said looper, said take-up cam being shaped so as to take up the looper thread when the looper is moving forward into the needle loop and also to take up the looper thread when said looper is being retracted from the needle 2. The combination of a looper, a vertical support therefor, means for oscillating said looper support, a take up cam mounted to move withsaid looper, thread guides cooperating with said take up cam, said take upcam beingso. disposed as to engage and release the thread 1n each dlrection of movement.
3. The combination of a looper, a looper. support, means for oscillating said looper support, a take up cam secured to said looper support at a point adjacent the looper, spaced arms having thread guides therein cooperating with said take up cam, said take up cambeing so shaped and disposed relative to said thread guides that the looper thread is engaged and released in each di rection of movement of said take up cam.
41. The combination with a looper, a vertical support therefor, means for oscillating said looper, ofatake up cam carried by said looper support, spaced threadengaging arms cooperating with said take up cam, each of said arms being provided with a thread eye and athread slot leading to said thread eye, said thread slots being oppositely disposed in said arms.

10. In a sewing machine, a needle and a looper, a support for said looper, means to secure said looper to said support, a takeup carried on said support and having a vertical adjustment thereon. A take up cam for sewing machines including a thread engaging .member cut away centrally and shaped so as to form substantially the outline of an ellipse whereby said take up cam is relieved of excessive weight.
12. A take up cam for sewing machines, including a thread engaging member cut away centrally and shaped so as to form substantially the outline of an ellipse whereby said take up cam is relieved of excessive weight, a support for said take up cam located at one of the foci of the ellipse.
13. In a sewing machine, a needle, a looper, a looper support, a take-up cam carried by said support, thread guides cooperating with said take-up cam, and means whereby said thread guides may be adjusted.
14C. The combination of a thread carrying implement and a thread controller therefor, including an oscillating shaft, a controlling member carried by said shaft and having a cam shaped thread engaging surface, thread guides for the thread located respectively on opposite sides of said controlling member, said cam shaped thread engaging surface being so disposed relative to the thread guides and timed as to take up the thread twice for each complete oscillation of said controlling member.
15. The combination with a looper, a looper shaft, means for oscillating said shaft, a take-up member mounted on said shaft, and thread guides for guiding the thread to the looper and into the path of the take-up member, said take-up member having a cam projecting surface adapted to take up the thread twice for each complete oscillation thereof.
