* AUNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD SULLIVAN ivn eene'rnjor WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. October 2, 1911. Serial No. 652,420. I
.To all whom it may concern U Be itknown that I, RICHARD SULLIVAN MACGRATH, a citizen of the United States, at present residing in the city of Winnipeg, in
the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented a new. and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following is the speci- My invention relates to trunks pensive, durable and compact trunk supplied with trays, a drawer to open outward in front,,and a divided bottom compartment,
all of such parts being readily accessible."
' The drawer is arranged so that entrance can be had to it while the main part of' the trunk is closed and locked, this feature allowing one to keep private papers or other articles oftentimes wanted in a place where they can be quickly gotten at without having to unlock the whole trunk to rocure them.
scribed and later pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1, is a vertical cross section view" through the trunk. Fig. 2, is a vertical cross section view through the trunk with lid or top partly open. Fig. 3, is an enlarged detailed vertical section view through a portion of the trunk showing also one of the four spring hooks, quadrant shaped, for lifting up the trays from the body of the trunk into the lid. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of one of the four spring hooks, quadrant shaped.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure. I
1, represents'the body of the trunk which is rectangular in form presenting ends 2 and 3, sides 4 and 5 and a bottom 6.
7, is the top or lid of the trunk which is a little deeper than the ordinarv trunk lid and is designed to close over the body thereof, such lid being formed from members 8 and 9, side members 10 and 11, and a top piece 12. The lid is secured at the back to the body 1 by hinges 13.
14, is a removable partition dividing the body of the trunk, which partition is inserty and the 0b; 1 ject of the invention is to provide an inex- ,ed between battens 15 secured to the ends 2 anda, I
16, is a horizontally disposed hinged board at the back of the partition located in the body of the trunk, such board and partition dividing the bottom into three compartments, at, b, and 0; and being removable if not required by the user.
WVithin the body and partly within the lid of the trunk is a'main tray, 17 which car ri es an open sided box shaped support, 18, for ano'utwardly opening drawer 19, adapted to be removed through an opening in the front side of the trunk. A flap 20 is pro- *vided to'close saidopening, said flap being hinged at its lower side and adapted to open downwardly and outwardly as indicated in the drawings. This drawer 19 is thus rendered readily accessible and may be opened or closed while the lid is locked on the body of the trunk. In practice the flap 20 is provided with means for locking it to the front side of the lid, when the flap and the lid are both in closed position.
22, is a top tray fitting within the main tray 17.
23, are four quadrant shaped hooks secured, two at each end of the lid of the trunk, and are intended when pressed downward to pass in through the holes 25; these holes are bored in through the ends of the lid so that the hooks can go through the ends of the lid and enter in through the holes bored in 26, situated in the ends of main tray 17. When the hooks are pressed downward they hook and catch in the main tray 17 and when the user lifts the lid of the trunk they lift at the same time the main tray 17, which is hooked to the lid and the drawer 19,t ray 17 and top tray 22, which are carried by the lid, thus affording direct access to the body of the trunk without the trouble of having first to remove the tray.
If it is desired to obtain an article in either of the trays the trunk is unlocked and the four quadrant shaped hooks 24 are swung outwardly so as to release the tray 17 from the lid. Accordingly the lid can be raised free of the trays which remain resting in the body of the trunk, on supporting strips 24 which are secured to the inner side of the ends of the trunk body.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A trunk having a lid connected to one side thereof for angular movement in a vertical plane, the trunk being further provided With an opening at one side below'the level of the lid when the latter is closed, and with a closure for said opening, a tray adapted to be carried in the lid and having a support depending therefrom, a drawer in said support wholly carried by the tray and arranged opposite the said opening in the side. of the trunk when the tray is in place, in the trunk,
and means carried by the lid to detachably secure the tray in the lid to cause the tray to remain in and be lifted bodily by the lid and completely out of the trunk when the lid is opened, said securing means when detached permittingthe lid to be opened without raising the tray.
2. A trunk having a lid connected to one side thereof for angular movement in a vertical plane, the trunk being further provided 7 with an opening at one sidebelow' the level of the lid when the latter is closed, and With a closure for said opening, a tray adapted to be carried in the lid andhaving a support depending therefrom, a drawer in said support wholly carried by the tray and arranged opposite the said opening in the side of the trunk when the tray is in place, in the trunk and means carried by the lid to detachably secure the tray in the lid to cause the tray to remain in and be lifted bodily by the lid and completely out of the trunk when the lid is open, said securing meansfwhendetached permitting the lid-to be 0 ened Without rais- Bremen SULLIVAN mealt me. l Vitnesses 4 CHAs, PEARCE, Grno.
