the rear end of the breech block down so that the upper portion of the rear kend thereof will clear the abutment shoulder 44, this vbeing accomplished by the swinging movement of the locking member which is pivotally connected to the action bar. As the breech block moves backward, the shell eX- tractor, the forward end of which engages over the rim of the shell, will cause the shell to be w-ithdrawn from the barrel and, when the rim of the shell comes in contact with the shoulder 63 and its further backward movement is arrested thereby, the shell eX` tractor will yield slightly and throw the shell laterally vout through the opening 60 in the casing, the closure being drawn back with the breech block to allow the shell to be thrown out. As the beveled shoulder 2l upon the cam-shaped edge of the locking 'member comes in Contact with the inclined edge of pawl 32, the latter will be thrown laterally upon its pivot to allow the locking block to pass toits farthest rearward position withoutoperating the tilting shell lifting member. By moving the sliding handle forward, the inclined edge 36 upon the cam projection 20, coming in contact with the inclined edge 35 of .the pawl, will cause the latter to tilt down the rear end of the shell raising member, thus lifting the shell and also the tilting finger which raises the rear end of the shell, as shownin Fig. 4 of the drawings, preparatory to the shell being driven forward by the breech block into the barrel without any danger of jamming. After the cam-shaped projection of said locking member passes by the pawl, the shell is driven vforward into the barrel and the lifting member quickly returns to its normal position. As the forward end of the breech block comes in contact with the shoulder 40, the shell will have been driven to its proper position within the barrel and a further forward sliding movement of the handle will cause the locking block to tilt upon its pivot to the position shown in Fig. Q, of the drawings, in which its lower conveXed edge, `coming in contact with the upper end of the lug 42, will cause the rear end of the breech block to be thrown into a positively locked position against the abutment shoulder 44, after which the gun may be fired by pulling upon the trigger to release the hammer which is thrown by the hammer spring against the rear end of the ring pin. It will be noted that, unless the breech block is in a securely locked position, it will be impossible for the hammer to strike the firing pin by reason of the hook-shaped projecting end 16 of the locking member forming an abutment surface against which the hammer would contact, thus producing a safety device which will positively insure the shell being locked within the barrel before it will be possible to lire it.
Should it be desired to disconnect the hammer from the trigger' as a safety means when the shell is within the barrel, it may be 'done by the operator holding the lower projecting end of the hammer against the tension of the spring bearing against the same after the hooked end of the hammer is released from the slot in the end of the trigger and, in the event of it being desired to cock the gun. it may lbe automatically done by simply throwing forward the lower projecting end of the hammer until the hooked end thereof snaps over the slotted end of the trigger.
What I claim to be new is l. A repeating shot gun having a pivotally mounted shell raising member, means actuated by the latter for causing the shell to aline with the barrel as the shell is raised, a sliding action bar, a breech block actuated thereby, a spring-pressed pawl pivotally mounted upon said pivotal member, and means upon the breech block designed to contact with said pawl to cause the member to tilt as the breech block moves in one direction.

A repeating shot gun having a pivotally mounted shell raising member, means actuated by the latter for causing the shell to aline with the barrel as the shell is raised, a sliding action bar, a breech block actuated thereby, a spring-pressed pawl pivotally mounted upon said pivotal member, a locking member pivotally mounted upon the breech block and provided with a cam projection having a beveled portion, which projection is designed, as the breech block is moved forward, to contact with said pawl to cause the shell raising member to tilt, the pawl moving idly on the return movement of the breech block.

A repeating shot gun having a pivotally mounted shell raising member, means actuated by the latter for causing the shell to aline with the barrel as the shell is raised, a breech block and a firing pin carried thereby, a llocking member pivotally mounted upon the breech block, a sliding action bar pivotally connected tosaid locking member, an abutment against which the locking member is adapted to contact to elevate the breech block to a locked position, a springpressed pawl upon the shell lifting member,
said locking member having a projectionl adapted to contact with the pawl to cause the shell lifting member to tilt as the breech block moves forward, a spring-pressed hammer and a trigger for engagement with the vthebreeeh block into a locked position, a

a breech block and a firing pin carried thereby, a locking member having a cam edge and a hook portion, said shell raising member having a recess in the face thereof, a springpressed `pawl mounted within said recess t andhaving its upper edge angular and positioned in the path of the projectionfupon the locking member, affording means Whereby, as the breech blookis moved forward, a projection upon the locking member will cause ythe shell raising member to tilt, the .pawl operating .idly on the 'return movement i of the breech block, a spring-pressed hammer and a trigger.
