Be it known that we, Lnwrs A. CARPENTER and RICHARD gMmDLn'roN, citizens of the United States, residing in Revere, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachu setts, h; ve invented an Improvement in Two- Piece Pipe-Hangers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification, like characters the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a pipe hanger and has for its object to provide a sheet metal hanger .of two pieces, which is light, strong, ,inexpensive, attractive, and ornamental in appearance. For sake-of distinction the two members of the hanger may be designated the base member and the cap member. The base member is designed to be applied to the wall, ceiling or other support,
I and comprises a hollow body portion havlng cured the cap member, having a'substam. wally-semicircular recess which cotiperates "tial-ly flat ears of the cap. The base membermay be secured to the wall or other support 1 by a screw extended through an opening in.
will be y of this specification.
hanger embodying this invention.' Fig. 2,
a substantially central semicircular recess extended from the front wall of the base toward the back thereof, for the reception of substantially one half of the pipe to be supported and to which front wall is sewith the recess in the body portion. The front wall of the base is provided on opposite sides of the recess with substantially flat portions, which are engaged by the substanthelwall of the recess in said base member. These and other features of this invention pointed out in the claims at the end QFigurel shows an elevationofalpipe a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 8, a
plan ofthebase member inverted, and Fig.
4, a section on the line4-4, Fig. 2'.
Referring to the drawing a represents the hollow base member; and b the cap member .[of a pipe hanger embodying this invention.
The'hollow base member a is struck up from afs'ingle piece of sheet IIIGtE ILl I CO form a hollow body portion 10, which'is open at its rear side and closed atits front side. The body portion 10 is provided with a central substantially semicircular recess, whose bottom wall 12forrns part of the front wall of the hollow base, which" frontfw'all is pro 1 l TWO-PIECE PIIPE-HANGER.
substantially flat portions 13, 14.- 1,; Thedoody portion 10 may and. referably will be providedv atfits rear side with an out Wardlyextended flange 15 integral :there with. The body portion 10 may and preferably willbemade substantially oval in cross section and also tapering from the rear side to the frontside. The cap .membenb 'may and preferably will be made of sheet metal and is concaved transversely and provided with a substantially semicircular recess, which cooperates with the recess in the base member for the reception of the pipe (Z, and said cap member is provided with ears 17, 18,

vided on opposite sides l which engage: the flat portions 13, 14 of the front wall ofthe hollow base member, and are secured theretoby the screws 19, 20.
The wall 12 of the recess in the hollow base member is provided with a countersunk portion 21, for the reception below the bottom of the recess of the head of the screw 22, by which the hollow basemember is secured to the wall, ceiling or othersupport 23.
. The flat portions 13, 14 of the front wall of the hollow base member are provided with openings 24, 25, whose walls'26, 27 are ex-.
tended into the hollow base and. are screw threaded to be engaged by the screws 19, 20.
The pipe hanger herein shown and described is light, strong, inexpensive and pleasingin appearance. The oval and tapering'form of the hollow body portion imparts the necessary strength to enable thin sheet metal stock to be used, and the front or outer ends of the walls of the body por tion, are braced by the front wall which is integral therewith. Claims. i n
. 1. A- pipe hanger comprising a sheet metal base" member having a hollow body portion open at its rearend and provided atits front end with a wall to close said body portion and having a recess for the reception of a pipe and substantially flat portions on opposite sides of said recess, the bottom wall of the latter having a countersunk, opening, anda sheet metal cap member having a recess and substantially fiat ears on opposite sides thereof, and means to secure said ears to the fiat portions of the end wall of said base member, substantially as described.
2. A pipe hanger comprislng a sheet metal base member havinga hollow body portion open at its rear end and provided with an the mean of said body having a substantially semicircular recess forthe reception of a pipe and substantially flat portions o-nopposite .sidesof ,said recess and having side'a'nd end walls; and a cap member havinga recess for the reception of the pipe and ears on opposite sides thereof, Ineans to secure said ears to the flat pore tions of the front wall of said basernenibr, substantially as described.
