Description

"PATENTED JAN. 24, 1871 C. F. LINSGOTT.
METHOD OF SECURING JOINTS OF FRAMES, 6w.
flinited time igitillii Gtiijline.
(ll-[All LES 1 LINSGOTT, OF NEW YORK, Y., ASSIGNOR T0 EDWARD S. TORREY AND JOSEPH TORREY, OF SAME PLACE.
To all Ito-2n it may concern Be it known that I, Cit-nines l5. Ilnxsco'rir, of the city, ct nty, and State of New York, have invented a new nd improved Method of Securing Joints for Frame 60.; and .l. do hereby declare that thei'ollow' ing is full and exact description thereof, reference being ad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters A? reference marked thereon making a part of this sp *iiication.
ihis nvention relates to a new and useful improvesecuring miter and other joints for frames, windm screens, See, and. consists in joining the angles of "aid frames, &c., with a key of peculiar constructi i, hereinafter fully described, in such manner as will hold the joints and angles of the frame in a and more rigid manner than the ordinary int, and at the same time the joint can be peditionsly made and at much less cost. In t e accompanying sheet of drawing- Big E: 1 representsa side View of my key;
l ig e 2, a plan view of same,
l i 'e 3, a ViOW of the key, as applied to straightjoint; nd
Fig es 4 and 5 show the applications of the key to the noldings when mitered.
Sim or letters of reference indicate corresponding part-s the drawing.
A rxn'escnts a key, which may be made of malleable in n or any other suitable material, whether east, rolled, n forged.
Thi key is made with two cylindrical edges, (i a, and an intermediate web, I), and ismade slightly tapering as shown in iig. 1, and may be of any size desired.
In rder to make a joint with my key, it is necessl only ry to dress off the two faces ofthe molding, the,
Letters Patent No. 111,128, dated J anuary24, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE METHODS OF SECURING JOINTS OF FRAMES, &c.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
it is desired to join. Then, by means of some suitable instrument, such as a drill, to form two holes, one on either side of the joint, corresponding in size to the cylindrical edges a (L' of the key, and with a saw or otherwise make atrack for the web 1.
The key is then inserted so as to straddle the joint, and driven home, when the. slight taper given to its sides will draw the faces of the joint tightly together, and the key once in place, its peculiar construction, as shown in fi 1, prevents the possibility of the joints springing apart, but confines it rigidly in position; or, instead of applying the key as above stated, the key may be made in the shape of a right angle, and then applied on the side of the melding, as shown in fig. 5.
It will be desirable, in practice, to punch the key a little below the surface of the molding, so that it the frame, after being put together, requires dressing, it can be done without injury to the plane.
I donot wish to coniinc myself to making framejoints merely with my key, nor to the use of but one key to each joint, biit it may be used wherever a mortise or tenon-joint is now employed or found necessary, and one or more keys may be used to each joint if desired.
Having thus described my invention,
\Vhat 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Len ters Patent, is-
