WILLIAM w. BOYLE AND'FRANK MILLER, or sr. JAMES, MICHIGAN.
.FURNITURE- F ASTE ING.
Application filed June 26, 1913 Serial No, 775,961. i i p To all whom it may concern of CharlevoiX and State of Michigan, have invented newand useful Improvements in Furniture-Fastenings, of which the 'follow ing is a specification.
Our present invention pertains to furniture, and contemplates the provision of peculiar and advantageousmeans for connecting mirror and othersuperposed frames to dressers and other articles of furniture, and this in such manner that the connection is a strong and rigid one, and yet when it is desired to remove the frame, the same'can be expeditiously and easily accomplished with out the employment of tools.
With the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is a rear elevation of an articleof furniture equipped with our novel device. Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal section taken in a plane above one of the fasteners. Fig. 3 is a plan of one of the fastener members to be attached to the superposed frame. Fig.
' 4: is an edge elevation of one of the fastener members on the back of the body of the article of furniture.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings. H
In the illustrated embodiment of our invention a mirror frame 1 is superposed on a dresserf2 or other article of furniture in the ordinary, well known manner.
Permanently fixed to the back of the furniture article 2 are fastener members 3 having enlarged upper portions 4:, and pivotally connected at 5 tothe said enlarged portions 4 are the enlarged portions 6 of members 7 which arearranged to be swung in. a plane parallel to the back of the article 2. The saidmembers 7 are preferably, though not necessarily, recessed as illustrated, in order-to contribute to the compactness of the fasteners.
Fixed at 8 to the back of the mirror or other frame 1, are fastener members 9, disposed horizontally, and having inner ofiset portions 10 between which and the back of the furniture article the swinging members members are in upright positions.
"D'sposed at the outer sides of the offset and carried at" the free-ends of said'spring strips are beveled heads 13. The said'spring strips 11 and heads 13 constitute spring latches for holding the swinging members 7 in engagement with-the members 9 to secure the frame 1 on the furniture article 2.
With the parts relatively arranged as shown in Fig. 1, it will be manifest that the frame 1 will be-securely and rigidly held on the article 2. VVhen, however, it is desired to detach and remove the frame 1, it is simply necessary to draw the heads 13 of the spring strips in a direction away from the back of the article 2 and then swing .f areadapted to rest whenfsaid swinging Be it known that we, WILLIAMWV. BOYLE and FRANK MILLER, citizens of the United States, residing at St. James, in the county the members 7 inwardly and downwardly in a plane parallel to the back of the article 2. It will also be here noted that when so swung inwardly and downwardly, the members 7 will be out of the Way and will not be liable to breakage or injury when the piece of furniture is moved.
To fasten the frame 1 on the article 2 in accordance with my invention, it is simply necessary to correctly position the frame 1, and then swing the members 7 upwardly and outwardly until they snap by the heads 13 of the strips 11 and assume positions between the oflset portions 10 and the back of the article 2, when the frame 1 will be safely and strongly locked to the article 2.
In the mounting of the mirror we prefer to employ hook-shaped bearings 25 on the uprights of the frame 1, in combination with notched trunnions 26 fixed with respect to the mirror and disposed in bearings 25 so that said bearings rest in the said notches. WVith the bearings and trunnions thus relatively arranged it will be manifest that the mirror will be strongly and safely supported in such manner that the mirror will be free to swing but will be effectually held against endwise play; also, that the mirror may be readily removed by merely lifting the trunnions 26 from the bearings 25.
Having described our invention, what we claim and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is:
The combination of superposed furniture parts, a fastener member pivotally connected with the back of one part and constructed and arranged to swing vertically in a plane Q p 1,111,209v
parailel to said back and behind the back" of the other part, a fastener member fixed in permit of movement of the first named' member past it and to confine said fastener member in the space between the ofl's et portion ofthe second-named fastener member 15 and the part to which said member is fixed. In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing Witnesses, e
