Specification of Letters Patent.

lPo-tenteol sent. 115), lthilll. serial no. issues.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Slur-inns Eliseo and Issac E. SHANE, citizens of the United States, residing at liens City, in the county of Jackson and State of liilissouri, have invented certain new and sel'ul linprovements in Feat'lier llreeting Apparatus, of which the following is e specification,
This invention relates to leather treating apparatus, and more specially to moons for laying the dust in feathers as the some are being prepared for use as pillows, bed or cushions.
lVith this general object in View, the in vention consists in certain novel enol peculiar features of construction and orgonisw tion as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be haul. to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of o. feather treating apparatus embodying our invention. Qis s top plan view of the some.
lo-the said ill-luring, 1 is on sir compressor for su 'iplying oil through c pipe 2 to a tank 3, and to s pipe 4 lending into the upper end oi on oil tank 5, s valve (5 controlling,
the passage of air from pipe 52 or tank 3 to 4! air in the latter, it isequippecl on ordinary gage 7. Oil may be supplied "to tcnlr in any suitable manner, the means shown consisting of u funnel-mouthed pipe 8 controlled by :1. suitable valve 9. lhe oil tunl-i is provided near its lower end; with dis charge pipe 10 controlled by s suitable valve 1, and to indicate when the quantity of oil in the tank is getting too low, ssiri tunh is provided with a, device 12 corresponding to a water column.
13 is on utoinizer to receive oil from pipe 10 and compressed air from pipe 14*: leer].- ing from pipe l or the tool: 3; ssirl atomizer being of any suito'ole or preferred type whereby the sir under pressure,- passing; from the pipe 1% shell eiliciently incl thoroughly atoinize the oil forced by the sir pressure in tank 5 through the discharge pipe thereol into the atomizer, the pipe 14- being equipped with a control valve 15.
The stoinizer discharges tangentially against the interior wells of s conduit 16 through which the feathers which to he crushecl are drawn by u rotary crusher hem ing inclined blades as disclosed at 18. The
the leathers are thoroughly agitated and distributed in order that the may be subjected to the jet oi. etomize oil from the atomizer 13, this treatment serving to lay the dust in the feathers, it being understood that this discharge of atomized oil on the feathers moy occur in the crusher, if desired.
A very light and volatile oil is em loyecl, as the use of a heavy oil would iron or the furthertreetment of the feathers di'fficult and furthermore would leave them in such condition that they could not be emplo ed in high grade pillows, mattresses or cus ions.
To facilitate the atomization of the oil the same is heated and to heat the same, We preferably employ steam coil 18, submerged in the oil of the tank 5, 51 pipe 19 controlled by valve .20, supplying steam to the coil and a pipe 21 conducting the exhaust steam from the coil.
From the shove description it will be upperent that we have produced an apparatus for laying dust in feathers which operates efficiently and reliably, which can be easily controlled, and which is susceptible of modification in minor particulars Without departing l roni the principle of construction defined by the appended claims.
We claim:
1. In an apparatus for treating feathers, the combination of a conduit, means for creating e current of air through the con- (luit to convey the feathers therethroughnnrl means fordischsrging atomized oil into the conduit, and upon the'ilcsthers while in transit through. the conduit.
2. 'ln an apparatus for treating feathers, the combination of a conduit, means Within the conzlnit'for crcatings current of sir to convey feathers therethrough and agitate the feathers while in transit, and means for discharging atomized oil into the conduit and upon the feathers therein.
ln testimony whereof we afix our signs turcs, in the presence of two witnesses.
SXGMUND S. HIRSGH.
v ISAAC E. SHANE.
