Mo'IsTENIno APPARATUS;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2i. Mii 5.
Application filed July 15. 1915. Serial No. 40325.
To all whom z5 may concern.'
Be it known that l. linnn 'la'rnnsox, a citizen of the lUnited States, residingn at lWoodland, in the countyv of lYashington and citate of Maine. have invented a nevi and useful lti'oisteniuej Apparatus. oi which 'the tollmving; is .-1 specification.
This invention relates to moistenine apparatus especially designed tor use in the manufacture oi paper.
(lne ot' the objects ot the invention is; to prt vvide appzratus whereby heated air is Charged with Water vapor so as to he satuinted, the air being conveyed to the point oi" use Where it is chilled so as to condense the water held in suspension.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides inv the. com hinatio'n and arrangement oi parts and in the. details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it beingl understood that changes in the precise embodimentot the invention herein disclosed. can he made within the scope of what isclaimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
` 'ln the accompanying drawings the prcterred form oi" the invention has been shown.
In said drawingsz-Figure 1 is a vertical Fig, l is a section on line A-B Fig. l.. --igx 3 is a sect-ion on line 'Ce-D Fig. l.
deterring to the iigures hy charaeers of reference 1 designates the casing of the heater, Said ycasingI heine; provided.l at its bottom, with an air inlet line extending: from the casing' 3 of a blower. Arranged within the lower portion of the casing and adjacent the air inlet. are radiators 4 in communication with a Steam suppl)7 pipe 5 and extending; from this supply pipe a bramfh pipe t discharging: into a spravii f pipe, Ywinch yis preferably extended clo c to the walls ai the casing 1 and has` outlet openings f4 for directing jet-s oii steam inuardlv across the path ot the ascending air current. Above the Spraying pipe 7 are superposed oppositelfyr inclined baille plates 9. An outlet pipe l() extends from the top of the casing and tern'iinates in a nozzle 11 provided with a bypass ll. said nozzle ha ing one or more outlet slots or other open -ings 12 therein which, in the present in- .afncm are adapted to direct air against a chilled cylinder lvl-l. .fi trap 14e entends -dou'nwardlv trom the pipe l() and is designed to receive moisture condensed vvitlh iu the pipe ll). lipe is preferably provided with a taire i5 and another valve lh is prcierahlv arranged in the branch pipe (i. ln unina" the apparatus herein described. steam is directed intdthe adiator 4lfrom the pipe and air is then forced upwardlyY through the casing' i. bv the blower so as to he tlmrouejlili,v heated br the radiators. The valve it) is then opened and portions ot' the ateam will he sprayed into the ascending; coi umu ot' air and become thorouglilvr commingled therewith. the amount ot' moisture held in suspension br thc air depending upon the temperature of the air. As the air laden with moisture ascende within the upper por4 tion oi.' canine` l it 'will circulate between the batiie plates.y these plates serving" to Sep arate 'from the air any large particles ot moisture which mayy he mixed therewith. `he moisture laden air then flous "nrt\\fai"di,Y lthrough pipe l() to the nozzle ll, trom which it is directed onto the chilled roller or ovl inder lil where condensation takes place. the moisture being here used for thc purposes intended.
While the apparatus is especially dcuigncd tor use in connection with paper making ymachinerv. it is to he understood that it can bc -mplo vcd wherevery itv is desired 'to moiiaten material, Furthermore. nieansy other than a chilled roller '13 can .he enr plo 'ed tor comh-insino the moisture as the air issues from the nozzle. Also instead ot having' the f-tcam spra'\'in c' n'icans combiiicd with a heating` means. one `form ot heater can he used and the steam can he. supplied from a separate source. For example. an electric heater could be cmplovcd and a Lsteam pipe could be extended lo the Sprayim;y pipe i). This nmdilication is so ohviousl that it not deemed necessary to show or describe the saine in detail.
lil/*hat is claimed l. Moistening apparatus including an air heater. a nozzle in conm'iunication therewith. means for setting up a forced circulation ot' air through the heater and to the nozzle7 and means `tor directing a jet of steam into the preheated air.
Q. l\l oistening apparatus including an air heatenra nozzle in communication therewith, .means for directing a current of air through the heater tothe nozzle, and means for cation With the easing,
the heater' and nozzle for' the heater and the nozzle, means between directing steam .the heater lto -means for directing al current of airv through the heater and to the-nozzle; means between nozzle. for directing steam' .into the preheated air.; and means between the nozzle and the steam directing means for separating Water from the'air.l
4. Moistenin apparatus including an airheater, .a nozz e in communication therewith, air chilling means adjacent the nozzle, means for directing acurrentof air through directing steam into the preheated air.- 5. Moistening apparatus including a casing, a radiator therein, a. nozzle in communication with the casing, means for directing' a current of air past the radiator and to the nozzle, and a steam sprayin member Within the casing and between'the radiator and nozzle. 6. Moistening apparatus'inoluding a casing, a radiator therein, anozzle in communil 'means for directing -r a' current cf air past the radiator and to the nozzle, a
