UNITED STATES PATENT UFFTGF.
GUSTAF BERNHARD SUNDELL, OF STOCKHOLIVI, SWEDEN.
BIL-CUP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAF BERNHARD SUNDELL, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Stockholm, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented a new and useful Oil-Cup, of which the following is a speciflcation.
The invention relates to oil-cups in general, but more particularly to closures for the same; and it consists of the construction and arrangement of the closure in relation to the cup, as will be hereinafter fully disclosed in this specification, and briefly set forth in the claims.
The chief object of the invention is to provide a closure for oil-cups, which will protect the same from dust, dirt etc., and of such construction that it will not be pulled open by the cotton waste, catching into it, used in wiping the machine.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a vertical section of an oil-cup, showing my improved closure attached thereto; Fig. 2, a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a rear elevation of the closure; Fig. 4, a vertical section of a slightly modified form of oil-cup and closure; Fig. 5, a top plan view of the same; Fig. 6, a side elevation of the closure thereof, and Fig. 7 a side elevation of another form of oil-cup, the closure being removed.
Referring to the several views, the numeral 1 indicates the oil-cup, which may be of any suitable shape, having its upper edge slitted to provide a hook 2 to form part of a hinge connection or joint, as will be hereinafter described.
The closure or cover 3 is formed with a downwardly-extending flange i, in which is made a slot 5 for the insertion of the hook 2 which, when passed through the slot and bent over upon itself, will complete the hinge connection or joint, shown in Fig. 1; or as shown in Fig. 4, wherein the hook is shown passing through the slot in a direction opposite to that shown in Fig. 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 10, 1913.
Patented Sept. 15, 1914. Serial No. 766,817.
In the flange 4 of the cover is suitably slitted to form one or more spring tongues 6, which serve as springs through pressure against the side of the cup, to keep the cover closed against accidental displacement in cases where the cup is fixed to rotatable or shakable parts. These spring tongues may be of any desired or suitable shape, such as is shown in Fig. 1, wherein the tongue is of a triangular shape; in Fig. 4, wherein it is shown rectangular, and in Fig. 6, wherein it is shown curved. The free ends of the spring-tongues should be located toward the opposite side of the hinge, so as to provide for a ready and easy closing of the cover.
In Fig. 7, I have shown a spring-tongue 7 formed in the upper portion of the cup that is covered by the flange of the cover, against which its spring pressure is exerted to maintain the cover in closed position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. An oil cup comprising a pivoted cap member and a cup member, said members being provided with interfitting portions, one of said inter-fitting portions being provided with an integral tongue adapted to exert a pressure upon the other of said portions, whereby the cap member is maintained in closed position.
2. The combination with an oil cup, of a cover provided with a flange which telescopes with the top of the cup, the flange being slitted to provide a tongue substantially within the confines of the flange, and adapted to bear through a substantial portion of its extent, against the telescoping portion of the cup.
GUSTAF BERNHARD SUNDELL.
