My invention relates to an improvement in that class of small portable alarm clocks,
known to. the trade, as nickel alarms and adapted to be adjusted or converted to sound a long continuous alarm or a short intermittent alarm, as desired,the object of my present invention being to produce a Specification of Letters Patent.

: simple and reliable alarm clock of the character described in which the conversion of the clock for sounding a continuous or an intermittent alarm is effected through an alarm-converting member mounted in the case directly above the movement.
WVith these ends in view my invention consists ina convertible'alarm-clock having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. 4
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a case designed to represent a greatly enlarged watch and consisting, as shown, of an annular band or casebody 2, a removable back 3, and a hollow pendant 4 applied to the center of the top of the case-body 2, furnished with a pivotal bow 5, and mounting a rotatable and vertically movable plunger or stem 6 held in place by means of a retaining-pin 7 passing transversely through it and engaging with the inner face of the case-body 2. At its upper end the said stem is furnished with a hollow watch-crown 8 while its lower end is furnished with a shouldered screw 9 for the reception of an extension 10, the lower end .of which is beveled as at 11. Between the stem 6 and'eXtension 10, I interpose an alarm-converting cam 12 circular except for being furnished with a notchlS. escapement or crown-wheel 24 of the alarmtrain which may be of any improved construction and is not shown in detail herein. The said wheel 24 co-acts with an ordinary verge or pallet 25 mounted upon a rockmaybe of anyapproved construction and arrangement.
To limit the rotation of the stem 6, the same is provided with a stop-pin 35 located within the hollow crown 8 and mounted-in an arm 36 secured to the stem, the lower end of the pin entering a segmental slot 37 in a disk 38 acting as a closure for the upper end of the hollow pendant 4. The said disk 38 is furnished with spring fingers 30 39 engaging with the stem 6 to frictionally hold the same in its place against undue freedom of rotation or endwise movement. As shown, the movement is provided with a dial 40 having an alarm-setting circle 41 35 and a seconds circle 42.
' To carry out the watch-"design of the case, it is provided, as shown, with a concavo convex crystal 43 mounted within the forward edge of the case-body '2 which is supported, as
4 shown, upon a pair of bracket-like feet 44. The front of the pendant 4 is provided with the word Alarm placed so as to be exposed by the crown 8'as shown in Fig. 1, when the stem 6 is lifted to make the clock 45 an alarm-clock. On the other hand, when the stem 6 is crowded inward as shown in Fig. 4, for the shutting off of the alarm mechanism altogether, the lower edge of the crown 8 entirely covers and conceals the word Alarm upon the pendant. Below the said word Alarm on the front of the pendant, are placed the Words, Long and Repeat, located one above the other and accompanied by arrowsindicating the directionin which the crown must be turned for converting the clock from a long alarm to an intermittent alarm andvice'versa.
When the stem 6 is lifted for the clearance of its extension 10 from the alarmshut-off arm 29 of the lever 15, the spring 19 will assert itself to turn the shaft 18 so as to swing the lever 15 from left to right, looking from the rear of the clock, whereby the edge of the arm 14 of the said lever is allowed to co-act with the alarm-converting cam 12. Now according to the position of the notch 13 of the cam 12 with respect to the arm14, the clock willsound a long or a short alarm. Thus if the notch 13 is registered with the arm 14, the same will enter the notch as shown in Figs. 2 and 7 which will permit the spring 19 to rock the shaft 18 so as to bring the alarm-stop finger 21 of the lever 15 into posit-ion to co-act with the stop-pin 23 in the wheel 24. The timetrain by rotating the intermittent-alarm cam-wheel 32 now periodically rocks the lever 15 through its arm 30 so as at regular intervals to disengage the finger 21 from the stop-pin 23, whereby an intermittent alarm will be sounded.
To convert the clock into a long or continuous alarm, the crown 8 is rotated through the distance represented by the length of a segmental slot 37 whereby the alarm 14 is compelled to ride out of the notch 13 in the cam 12, thus positively rocking the lever 15 just enough to register its long-alarm clearance-slot or space 22 with the path of thepin 23 so that when the 9,0 alarm-train is once released it will continue to run and sound the alarm until it is stopped by the running down of the alarmsprmg, or by the manual crowding down of the stem 6 into its alarm shut-off position in which it is shown in Fig. 4.
By means of my improvement, the clock is converted from a long alarm clock to an intermittent alarm clock and vice versa, and shut off altogether, by the manipulation 9 from the outside of the clock of a single alarm-controlling member in place of two or more switches which have commonly been employed for the purpose in prior practice.
In the embodiment of my invention, as herein shown and described, in an alarm clock designed to simulate a big watch, the alarm-controlling member has taken the form of a winding-and-setting stem, but this is a question of design and the said controlling member might be given another form without in any way changing its essential character or function.
I claim v 1. In a convertible alarm-clock, the com- 13 bination with the case thereof, of an alarmmechanism convertible for sounding an intermittent alarm or a long alarm and adapted to be shut off altogether, and an alarmcontrolling member mounted in the said case and coacting with thesaid alarm-mechanism for shutting it off altogether or causing it to sound a long or an intermittent alarm, or vice versa.
2. In a convertible alarm-clock, the combination with the case thereof, of an alarmmechanism including an alarm-converting lGXBl', and an alarm-controlling member mounted in the said case, co-acting at its inner end with the said lever and projecting at its outer end through'the case for manual operation, whereby the said lever may bepositioned to shut ofi' the alarm altogether or for the sounding of an intermittent alarm, or a long alarm, or vice versa.
3. In a convertible alarm-clock, the combination with the case thereof, of an alarm mechanism including an alarm-converting lever, a' rotary alarm-controlling member mounted in the said case and, an alarmconverting cam mounted upon the said rotary alarm-controlling member and co-acting with the said lever for positioning the same forthe sounding of an intermittent alarm, or a long alarm, or vice versa.
4. In a convertiblealarm-clock, the com bination with the case thereof, of an alarmmechanism including an alarm-converting lever provided with an operating-arm, an
alarm-shut-oif finger, an intermittent-alarm finger, a shut-off arm, and an intermittentalarm arm; and a longitudinally movable "and rotatable alarm-controlling member mounted, in the clock-case and co-acting with the said operating-arm and with the said shutoff arm of the said lever.
5. In a {convertible alarm-clock, the combination with the case thereof, of an alarmmechanism including an alarm-converting lever, a longitudinally movable and rotatable alarm controlling member mounted in the'said case and provided at its inner end with a cam co-acting with the said lever for positioning the same for the sounding of an intermittent alarm, or a long alarm, and vice versa.
6. In a convertible alarm-clock, the combination with the case thereof, of an alarmmechanism including alarm-converting lever, and; a rotatable and longitudinally movable stem mounted in the clock-case and provided at its inner end with an alarmconverting cam engaging with the said lever for rocking the same and the said stem also engaging with the said lever for rocking the same.
7. In a convertible alarm-clock, the com- 'bination with the case thereof, of a timetrain, an alarm-mechanism including an alarm-converting lever adapted to be perico-acting with the said lever for positioning the Same in its alarm-shut-ofi position and provided with a cam co-acting with the said lever for positioning the same in its long and short alarm positions, and means for limiting the longitudinal and rotatable movement of the said stem.
8. In an alarm-clock, the combination withthe case thereof, of a time-mechanism, an alarm-mechanism including a wheel carrying a stop-pin, an intermittent alarmwheel driven by the said time-mechanism, an alarm-converting lever provided with fingers respectively coacting with the said stoppin, with an intermittent-alarm arm coacting with the said wheel, with an operat ing-arm and with a shut-off arm; and a longitudinally movable and rotatable stem provided with a cam co-acting with the said operating-arm for positioning the said lever and adapted at its inner end to co-act directly with the said shut-off arm, also for positioning the said lever.
9. In an alarm-clock, the combination with the case thereof, of an alarm-mechanism including an alarm-converting lever, and a manually operable alarm-converting stem mounted in the said case 'and'longitudinally movable and rotatable therein for co-action with the said lever to position the same for shutting oif the alarm-mechanism altogether and for sounding an intermittent or a long alarm or vice versa, the said stem being provided at its inner end with a removable extension and with a convertingcam adapted to be independently engaged with thesaid lever and the said cam being interposed between the lower end of the said stem and its said extension.
