JOINT FOR WINDOW-SASHES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1914:.
Application filed October 4, 1910. Serial No. 585,274.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. BITTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairview, in the county of Major, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Window- Sashes and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for holding window panes in position without using putty or like sealing means, and the leading object is th construction of a sash having interlocking parts formed to receive the edges of a window pane and to securely hold the window pane to the sash.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sash constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the upper cross bar of the sash. Fig. 8 is a cross sectional view through the lower cross bar of the sash. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the ends of the upper cross bar. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an end of one of the side bars.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention 5 and 6 denote the side bars of a sash 7 the upper cross bar and 8 the lower cross bar. The side members 5 and 6 are formed with squared mortise sockets 9 near their upper ends and with longitudinal extending recesses 10 adapted to receive the edges of the window pane 11. The mortise sockets 9 receive the tenons 12 which project from the ends of the top cross bar 7 which bar is formed with a longitudinal extending recess or groove 13 to receive the upper edge of the window pane. The side members 5 and 6 are beveled at 14: and the top cross bar 7 is provided with beveled extensions 15 which contact with the beveled edges of the side members 5 and 6. The top cross bar 7 is also formed with end projections 16 which engage the sides of the side members 5. Screws 17 extend through the outer edges of the side members 5 and 6 adjacent to their upper ends'intothe tenons 12 of the upper cross bar whereby the upper cross bar is rigidly held to the side members and the window pane 11 is clamped between the upper cross bar and the side members. The lower cross bar 8 is formed with beveled extensions 18 which engage with the beveled portions 14: of the side members 5 and 6. The cross bar 8 is formed with rectangular tenons 19 which fit into sockets of corresponding shape formed in the lower ends of the side members 5 and 6. Fastenin screws or means 20 are extended through t e inner sides and adjacent to the lower ends of the side members 5 and 6 into the tenons 19 whereby the lower cross bar is securely held to the stiles. The lower cross bar is formed with a recess 21 to receive the lower edge of the window pane 11.
The entire frame is suitably painted and the crevices between the pane and the side members and end members of the frame are filled with paint or other filling material. The frame may be readily assembled and will securely hold a window pane in place.
Ehould a pane become broken the broken parts thereof may be readily removed by taking the frame apart.
What is claimed is A detachable joint for window sashes and the like, including a member having a bifurcated end and having a tenon between the furcations and shorter than the furcations, a second member disposed between the furcations and having a socket in which the tenon is engaged, and a screw removably engaged through the second member and into the tenon.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
' CHARLES F. BITTER. Witnesses:
EDNA E. SMITH, L. BURWELL.
