liVl PRQVEMENT EARTH-CLSETS.
' '1 The Schedule relaxed to In there Letter-Patent and meid/ng of the neme.
' I, Parrircx MALorn, of New Orleans, Louisiana,
l have inventeda' certain VImprovement in Earth- Closets, otlwhich thefollowng is a specification. z
Mylinvention, asis the casewith all improvements inearthclosets, is. designed to precipitate dry earth,
pulverzed charcoal, or other equivalent deodorizing t substance, in regular-and proper quantity andfat the proper time, iniorderl to deodorize the excreta deposited therein by the neutralization or absorption of the gases given `ont thereby, and thus to promotehnman health andcomfort.' ,4
`My improvement consists of a simple and cheaplyconstructed mechanical? arrangement, by which, through the agency of the cover of the seat of 'the closet, the hopper containing theI deodorizng substance is opened and closed at` the proper tin1`e, and the exact quantity of saids'ubstance'y that is necessary to accomplish 'the'end in vieu' is precipitated on'the f reslilydeposited fecal matter with unf-ailing certainty.
The precise character of my improvement, with respect alike to its lseparate parts or members and as when considered as a complete organism, will be at once and clearly understood by referring to the draw- I ing, which presents a side elevation of an earthcloset provided with `my improvement, with a part of the former broken awa in order to expose the latter to View. Y y
Behind Y the seat A of the closet, and rising above it, as in ordinary cases, is .the hopper B, for, storing the Vdeodonzing substance, which, at the hottorn,`in-
elincs downwardly from rear to front,- as shown at O,` in orderto throw forward the said substance by means' of its own gravity. The opening for the escape of this. substance 'is made at the bottom of the hopper,-
on its front. side, and this openingis flanked or faced on`each of its sides by thin metallic strips D, These strips. tnbscrve an important object, as will'bc secr hereafter.
The hopper' is curved at the point at which the opening for the escape of the Ade otl'c.\rizi ng substance is made, and hence, the strips D are also curved, as shown on the drawing..
The scat A ispTovided with a cover, E, which is hinged at its rear-cglgeto the back edge ot' the seat, alittle behndrthcpoint at which the cover is hinged and'has its'articulat-ion. .1 Linl'rs F are pvoted to it by means of sidesbars, which eres'ecurcd on each side of v said -covcr inA such manner' that they extelid rearward from Vthc back edge of it.
These links arc secured at their lower extremities, by-iviivot-joints, to a tilting or dumpingfplatform, G,
which is sustained by a wide bracket, H, at each of its 1 ends on pins or pivots a, which in .their turn are sustained by cleats' b fastened underneath the seat A.
The 'brackets Hare justllong enoughL to lswing the platform Gr just sufficiently below the pins A to cause the upper and'lower edges vof the platform G alterf nately to come Aas close to lthe curved front of the hopper Bas is compatible with the' provision of a suicient openspace between said edges and said front for the metallic gate I as th'e platform-is vibrated backward and forward on the pins a by the raising and -lowering of the cover E.
The platform G should extend transversely across the whple curved portion o f the front of the hopper, and lbe wideienongh to receive and hold 'a' sucient quantty'of the deodorizing agen-tcomplteiy to cover each deposit of fecal matter.
Underneath the platform G, and secured to .it at its rearedge, isa metallic gate, I, that is cnrvedon thesame radius or are as 'the section of the hopperthrough which the opening is madefor the eduction. ofthe deodorizing 'agent therefrom.
The gate I mpnges against the edges of the uiet-allic strips D, which latter', therefore, cut od the outs ward ilow of the deodorizing agent, whenever the,- gate closes the open-ing, in the most effective manner,
I whilst at the same time making the movement of the gatefar easier than' would otherwise bet-he case.
The gate I may or may not be hinged at the point of its connection with the platform G. In either caseV ,its operation is edicient.
Toinsure the falling od' of any portion ol" the deodorizing agent which may chance to dow ont on th'e sides of the opening upon the curved section of the hopper, 'grooves may be cut down the said portion jrmt outside the strips D; but as a general, thing this withv not be necessary in consequence of the inclination of thisportion of the hopper.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
When the cover E is down on the seat A the' Y i platform G will be thrown. backward, through the agency of the links F,- snciently to cause the gate to overlie, and thus close the discharge-opening in the" hopper; but when, onthe contrary, the cover is raised, the effect is to swing down the platform into the posi- -tion 'shown on the drawing. AThis uncovers the opening and permit-s the cleodorizing substance to ow by its own gravity through the same upon the platform- G, which now Ioccupies a position nearly horizontal, until the desired quantity is collected thereon, when, by its bankingrup, all further flow from the hopper is stopped. The quantity flowing ont is easily and ex* actly regulated by increasing or diminishing the size of the opening, by means of sliding panels oryother` equivalent means, with the greatest facility.' y
The deodorising agent that 4has found itczway on the platform G remains-thereupon until the vperson wettig the closet lrises vand. closes the ,cover down on the seat,
land/thus again, through the medium of the links F,
throws back the platform G, aud= by so doing closes the opening once "more by means of the gate 1, tilts 4the platform, and precipitates said substance thereby on theV excretq, just depsited.'l w
It will he perceived from this description that m'y intention is of very simple construction, and 'that all What claim .is- The combination of the curved strips Dv and the metallic gate I with theplatforrn G, the links F, and
the cover E, 'when these parte fe constructed, tirmnged, and operated substantially as desorbecl. "for the purpose set forth.
