To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Penny GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blaine, in the county of VVha-tccm and State of WVashington, have invented a new and useful Cant-Hook, of which the following is be used in the capacity of a spike pole.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and. claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In thedrawings accompanyingthis specification and forming a part thereof, the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated, in which a Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved cant hook with portions thereof being broken away to more clearly disclose the specific structural details thereof. Fig. 2 is a fragment-a1 view with the hook raised and out of operable relation with respect to the body portion of the cant hook and in such position that it may be moved throughout its retaining slot for adjustment therein. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents a handle or pole to which my improved cant hook is to be secured. The cant hook includes the body portion 5 which is provided with the bore 6 extending longitudinally thereof and into which extends the handle 4 and which may be either friction- CANT-HOOK.

ally or positively locked therein. The' body portion tapers to a point 7 at its front extremity and allows the handle and body por-' tion to be used as a spike pole should the occasion arise which would so warrant. The body portion is cylindrical in cross section and is provided with the upstanding bosses .8 arranged in pairs and of which there are two. The peripheral surface of the body portion intermediate the bosses 8 is flattened as at and upon which rests the upstanding hook carrying member 10. Thesaidhook carrying member includes the two plates 11 which are held spaced apart by a third plate 12 which is interposed therebetwcen and which 'is of relatively less width than the plates v11. The three plates are held in rigid relation by the bolts or pins 13 and the entire hook carrying member is rigidly secured to the .body portion 5 by the bolts 14 which pass through suit-able openings in the lugs or bossesS. The external or outer plates 11 areprovided with the slots 15 extending therealong and which are disposed atan angle to the longitudinal'a'xis ofthe body portion and with the apeX of the angle ad-- jacent the pointed end ofthe body portion.

Extending between the longitudinal slot defined between the upstanding plates 11 is the hook 18 which is provided at its outer extremity with the downwardly" extending claw'19 adapted to engage logs or other material after the manner of the ordinary cant hook. The book is provided adjacent its one end with the stub shaft or pin 20 extending therethrough and projecting beyond the side walls thereof. The said stub shaft is provided with the flattened portion 21 and which portion when in contact with one edge of the groove 15 allows the hook and stub shaft to be moved longitudinally of the groove or slot. However, when the said stub shaft is brought into registration with one of the cylindrical grooves 16 and 17 and is rotated about its own longitudinal axis, it will assume the position illustrated in Fig. 1 in which the flattened portion will rotate out of contact with the cylindrical surface of the groove and thus the stub shaft will be securely locked within the groove and will likewise lock the hook against shifting but at the same time allow for the free rotation thereof. The stub shaft or pin is rigidly fixed to the hook 18 with. the flattened portion 21 thereof so positioned that in the normal use of the hook, the stub shaft will be locked within one of the cylindrical grooves.
The lower. extremity 22 of the hook is adapted to contact with the bottom 23 of the slot defined by the upstanding plates 11 and thus limit the rotation of the hook in one direction so as to prevent the sharpened claw 19 from coming into forced contact with the body portion which would in time tend to dull and mar the same.
The cant hook is thus adjustable longi tudinally of the body portion and furthermore due to the obliquity of the axes of the slots 15 and axis of the body portion, allows the hook to approach or recede from said body portion according to which of the cylindrical grooves the stub shaft is positioned within. Also after the stub shaft has once rotated to a locked position Within the grooves, the hook will be mounted for free rotation through a certain are without liability of the hook becoming disengaged from its adjusted position. A pin 24 may be inserted through the body portion and through'the handle 4 in order to securely lock the same together, although the exact means whereby the handle is locked to the body portion may be changed as it is thought will be readily appreciated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A cant hook comprising a body portion, a handle carried thereby, an outstanding member carried by said body portion and provided with alined slots therein, the longitudinal axes of said slots inclined at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the said body portion, and a hook adjustably and rotatablv secured Within the slots of said outstanding member.
2. A cant hook comprising a body portion.
a handle carried thereby, outstanding members carried by said body portion and pro vided with alined slots therein, the longispaced intervals adapted to receive the trunnions therein and hold the hook against further shiftin said hook ada ated to rotate :37 about said trunnions as center.
3. A cant hook comprising a body portion,
a handle carried thereby, outstanding members carried by said body portion and provided with alined slots therein, the .longitudinal axes of said slots inclined. at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the said body portion, a hook adjustably and rotatably secured within the slots ofsaid outstanding members, and means carried by the said hook contacting with the said body portion limiting the rotation of the hook in one direction to hold the extremity of the hook out of contact with the body portion.
4. A cant hook including a body portion, upstanding spaced bosses carried thereby, outstanding plates rigidly secured to and er tending between said bosses. said platesheld in spaced relation and provided with slots extending at an angle to the longitudinal. axis of the body portion, said slots provided with cylindrical grooves, a hook provided with outstanding flattened trunnions positioned in said slots and adapted to rotatably engage the said cylindrical grooves,
said grooves adapted to hold the said hook in adjusted position during certain phases of the rotation of the stub shaft, the adjusted positions of said hook holding the same at spaced points from the body portion.
