Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1914.
Application iled February 24, 1914. Serial No. 820,657.
ATo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l", THOMAS F. BYRNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emporia, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strapsfor Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rThis invention relates to a strap for shoes and has for its principal object the production of a simple and eficient strap which is adapted to be attached to the heel portion of a shoe for preventing the saine from slipping.
Another object of this invention is the production of a strap for shoes which comprises a central body having diverging arms for allowing the strap to conform in contour to the shape of the shoe and the ankle of the wearer and holding the shoe against slipping and preventing the strap from bulging.
lVith these and other objects this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a perspective view of a shoe showing the strap carried thereby in use. Fig. Q. is a rear elevation of a shoe showing a portion of the retaining loop in sections and illustrating the manner in which the strap is carried thereby. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the strap.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals l indicates the usual shoe having the reinforced strip 2 upon the heel thereof. This reinforced strip 2 is stitched to the heel portion 3 of the shoe l as shown at 4. The strip then is stitched as indicated at 5 at its upper end to the shoe l thereby producing a loop 6 through which the strap This strap is preferably formed from a blank sheet of material and comprises a central bridge 7 having a straight upper edge S and from which the diverging arms 9 and 10 extend.
It will be seen by referring to Fig. 3 that the inner edges of the arms 9 and lO are straight and eXtend at an oblique angle relative to the edge 8 of the bridge 7. The strap is passed through the loop G so as to allow the bridge 7 to be positioned within the loop 6 while the straight upper edge S of this bridge will rest squarely against the upper portion of the loop 6, as clearly disclosed in Fig. 2. The arms 9 and l0 may then be passed around the ankle of the wearer at which time button ll carried by the arm l()` may be passed through the buttonhole l2 formed in the arm V9. f The ends of the arms may be attached in this manner and it will be seen that the heel portion of the shoe will will prevent the same from slipping up and be held firmly upon the wearers foot and down while the wearer is walking.
From the foregoing description it will be .seen that a simple and e'licient strap has been produced which is provided with a bridge portion having integral obliquely eX- tending arms thereby allowing the arms to conform in contour to the wearers ankle, thereby preventing the same from bulging when in use. It is-also obvious that .the strap may be made in two sections if desired or in a similar manner without departing from the spirit of the invention as long as the arms extend at an oblique angle at their projecting portions.
It will be seen that this construction of a strap may be used in connection with overshoes and rubbers for retaining the same upon the shoe of the wearer without departing from the spirit of this invention.
Vhat is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a loop adapted to be carried upon the heel portion of a shoe vand provided with a straight upper portion, and a strap adapted to be carried by said loop, said strap being provided with a central bridge portion, said bridge portion being provided with a straight upper edge, and a plurality of arms integrally formed upon said bridge and eX- tending divergingly therefrom7 the inner edges of said arms extending at oblique angles relative to the upper edge of said bridge, said bridge being adapted to be positioned within said loop so as to allow said upper edge to rest snugly against the straight upper portion of said loop, said In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my arms hemg adapted to be passed around the slgnature 1n presence of two wltnesses. ankle. of the wearer to engage each other 4 4 wher-@hy a shoe wlll he held :Lgmnst s hpplng THOMAS I" BYRNES and sald angular construction of stud arms Vltnesses:
