Description

G. G. SUTTON.
LEVEL ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 27, 1913.

auumto a CGSUTTQN UNITED AT S CHARLES summit, on cnnnnrvnnn, master 7 Lii'vniiATrAonMENrQ 1 1 f To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, CHARLES GI SUTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherryvale, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Level Attachments, of which the following is a specifiCZLtlOll,-T6f6l6l106 being had to the accompanying drawings. I
This invention relates to new anduseful improvements in attachments for levels and more particularly to a device for obtaining angles of various objects, the object of the invention being to provide a device of the above character which can be quickly and readily applied to an ordinary wooden straight edge whereby the same may be used for obtaining angles of various objects.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of eiiiciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view,
this invention consists in the novel features to the side of which is secured my improved attachment which consists of an arcuatev body member 2 connected at its ends bymeans of the transverse web 8. The body member 2 is provided at its ends and at its intermediate portion with the outwardly projecting perforated ears 4: through which are adapted to be inserted screws ornails to securely fasten the body to the side of the said straight edge; The body member 2 is substantially arcuate in shape and is pro vided upon one face thereof with the grad-u ations 5 which may be arranged in any desirable manner.
Formed integral with the web 3 at its intermediate portion is a downwardly project- I I S pecincation of ietters Patent.
ofwhich is adapted to 'be arranged opposite the graduated face of'the body. -The body: 5

ear 6 u'p onrwhich" is pivotally mounted the lower end of an'indicator the point ,cated at 8, which is slit inwardly at various places, as indicated a forming P each side of the indicator two sets of tongues, one set being somewhat larger and,
longer than the other. The larger set of tongues are, rolled upon themselves .to form the tubular side members 10 in which is arranged the leveltube 11. A second set of tongues which are indicated by the numeral 12 are then bent inwardly toward each other and arranged transversely across the ends of the members 10 so as to securelyQretain i the tube llwithin said'members. It will be readily apparent that by having the level tube carried by the-indicator, the I device may be used'for either leveling various objects or may be used for obtaining various angles by the use of the indicator 7.
Fromthe above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, 1t w ll be're'adily apparent that I have pro- 1 vided a simple and durable attachment for the well'known construction of levels in use at the present time whereby they may be used to obtain the angles of various objects.
It will also be apparent that by having the perforated ears 4: formed integral therewith, the device may be quickly and readily attached to the straight edge or removed 1 therefrom. It will be understood that my improved attachment may be constructed of any suitable light weight material such as. aluminum or the like :and that it is ex tremely simple in construction and can'be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to forsuccessfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing 5m an indicator formed of a single piece of "material having slits formed therein to pro- "vide two sets of tongues, one set of tongues being'larger than the other and bent upon themselves to form tubular members and the other set of tongues being bent inwardly and posite sides of the indicator, a level tube arranged across the ends of the tubular arranged therein, and transverse resilient members, as and for the purpose set forth. tongues "disposed across the ends of the tu- 2.
