To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Maliens P. NORTON, of the city ot' Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Device or Machine for Canceling Internal. Revenue Stamps issued by the Government for the payment of the tax imposed by the law; and' I do hereby declare' thefollowing to be a clear, full, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, reference being hereby had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and which said drawing makes a part of this my specification. Like letters represent and refer' to like .Or'correspending parts of my said invention and improvements.

Figures 6 and 7 represent internal ,revenue stamps that have been canceled by my said device or invention, the manner of doing it, and the time and the place, and by whom the same was accomplished or performed.

Having thus described the drawing, I will here proceed to describe the nature of my said invention, which is substantially as follows, to wit:

It consists in'constrncting, arranging, and combining au internal revenue canceling-stamp or. device, hereinafter more fully described, so as to contain la vcyli'nder'or type-wheel with the-initials of Acach and every month in the year, and a cylinder or type-wheel with figures `for the respective days of each and every month, and a cylinder or type-wheel with 'figures or characters to represent successive years, and which wheels or cylinders shall each revolve 'upon the same Shaft, or upon some other' suitable bearing or turning point, and which shall have arranged immediately between or Outside of, and combined with, suitably-constructed cutters, knives, or canceling device or devices.

It also consists in arranging and combining the revolving-date cylinders or t-ype-wheelsf'with Vtl'ie cutters,- knives, or canceling device or devices Vbetween the saule, and upon the outside Aof tl1e'same,'.vvith a statiouary form, from and by andlwith .which there is printed, formed, 'or made Vthe name of theperson or persons or-tirm or company Iowning thesame, aud performing the cancellation -ofesaid internal revenue stamp by' the'- said .type-wheels or revolving or changing dates and cut-ters'and knives or cnttersior-cuttiug device, arranged between and Outside-the same, or only immediately between, 'or'only Out-side of the-said cylinders, type-wheels, or' revolving and' changing dates, in the manner substantially as hereindescribed and set forth.

Having thus described the nature ofiny said iuventiou and improvements, I will now proceed to describe the constructionai'nl the 'operation' of the same, which are substantially as follows:

The said revolving dates, cyliuders, or'type-wheels a l) c el may be made in any diameter or thickness desired, and of suitable material. l a is the type-cylinder or wheel containing the propel' initials for each and every month in the year. 1 b is a type-wheel or cylinder of the same diameter of the said cylinder or wheel a, and it .contains rthe numerals l 2 3,' which are the only ones required upon this cylinder to give, in counectionwithj the cylinder or wheel c, the respective clays'u each month ofthe year as may lie desired or required. Upon the same shaft, and in close proximity to .said type-wheel or cylinder, I arrange the type-wheel or cylinder c, which is of the same diameter as that of said cylinders (t and b, and it containsthe numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and a (0) cipher. This cylinder or type-wheel, taken in connection with-the said cylinder or type-wheel b, will give any day in any and every month desired, and it must of course operate in conjunction with the cylinder b in the giving of any and all dates 0r days between gures l0 and 3l.Y

The type-cylinder d is of the same diameter as the i cylinders a l) c, and it contains figures whereby to give theyear desired, and it is so constructed as vto give 'the successive years when they may be required for ten or more years from the. first year used.

Instead of using two Ot' said type-wheels or cylinders, to wit, b and c, to form the day of the month, I sometimes use but one cylinder or wheel for that purpose.

` The said form'D is ittcd intoor upon the lower `part orfportion of the said frame B, and is there lirnily held by means of l screws or by any other suitablexmechanieal means. Its-nay be made in a circa-1 larform for in any other lshap'e desired, and of any suitablthickness. Upon" this form or ring D wilthe: constructed the initials or the name of the bank, coml pany, corporation, ottico, or person or persons owning `and using thesaid canceling device or instrument.

` The said frame B may be secured or fastened to. the khandle Ain any manner desired, or it may be adjustedito the vertical rod or piece E, fin. 5, having a coil spring, l, surrounding the same, and when properly adjusted thereto the" same may be' fastened inv the desired position in any manner and by any' mechanicalimeansdeemed best.

The said cutters or knives or canceling device are y constructed each with an aperture or opening through the sameyso as to permit 'the said shaft O to pass -through the same, while the upper end ot'each cutter or knife comes into contact with that part of the said frame B which is immediately above and over the said type-wheels or cylinders, substantially-as shown at figs. 1 and 2 of the `accompanying drawing, from'aud by which they each receive the power or force suticient to drive the sharp` or cutting-edge or edges through the said revenue stamp and also through the paper or document.
