Description

@anni Gtffitc,
To all whom it may concern y i" Be it known that-I, EDWARD S. GODMAN, of 4New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of celing-Stamp and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which the'same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing'fmniug part ot' this specification.` 'i My invention relates to stamp-caucelers, and my f purpose is to improvernpon those heretofore known to the public.
I will lirst'describe my invention in connection with `all that is necessary to a full 4understanding thereof', and then clearly point it out in the claim. y
" Figure l represent-sa side elevation of my improved stamp, a part beingr sectioned;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the die and dieholder; and 1 v11`igfure 3 is a-face view of' the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the die for holding the type; it is provided with a recess, B, arranged in a-straght line along the cenq 'uired to change from falling out while changing thel others. l E The arrangement of the recess for the type in the4 inanner described, affords space along the recess in the face of the die on each side, for sinking the name and address of the inventor', maker, or other person, as shown atl., so.. that theA print thereof will be `iin` the'c'anceling is done.
attached to the die, and "g having the cutters `L for cutting the ticket at the same time it is stamped as a further means of canceling; the said plates have 'notches formed inthe faces, j ruling any number of sharp edges' for the punching of y the ticket.
Louisiana, have invented anew and improved (lan A. ,y will enable others skilled in the art to make and use ter in the major laxis of theface, in which the type EDWARD. S. GOODMAN, OF NEW ORLEANSLOUISIANA.
Letters Patent No.' 110,031', dated December 13, A1870.
i IMPROVEMENT m HAND-STAMPS. l
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
These plates. are attached to -the sides of' the die, parallel with the line ot' type, by screws M, the said sides being rebated, to provide shoulders` N to counteract the upward thrust on the cuttcr-plates when striking the blow. n
rlhe teeth ofthcse'plates project downward beyond the face of thedie, so as to l'orm guides for the ribbon O,
vpreventing it from working away either side from the type- I propose to arrange the spindles I of the rollers for the ribbon so that they maybe slipped out of' the rollers to let them down l'or removing the ribbons and applying new ones, and 1 propose to retain the spindies by means ot' nuts Q, screwed onto the ends ot' the spindle-s, or itmay bc by plus driven transversely through holes in the spindles, washers being placed behind the said pins.
I propose to make the bed R, on which the-die strikes, of leather or other strong elastic substance, br the protection of the edge ofthe cutters, which will make indentations in they will strike successively, while the blow of the die will be sustained by the surface ot' :the bed.
This elastic bed is conlined bya brass or other ring, S, having a ilange, T, at the top, turned down upon the upper edge, the said ring heilig secured to the anvil U by screws V or other suitable means.
"W represents the stripper, which consists of' a piece of wire bent double and shaped so that, while the endsarc attached to the bed-piece X at one side ot' the bed R, the other part will project over the latter and-around the 'space which the die occupies when forced down, so that the card or ticket stamped/being passed under it whenplaccd on the bed R. will come in contact with it when the die riscs, and be stripped ol. he die may be applied 'either to a vibrating'arm, Y, 0r to a verticallyreciprocating piston.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The shoulders and notched plates K N, elastic bed R, flanged ring S T, and anvil U, when all are combined, constructed, and arranged as'and for the purpose described.
