To all whom it'ma concern citizen .of thefUnited States, residingat Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piped Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new-and useful improvements in pipeywre'nches, and has particular relation. towrenchesof the chain yp t The objectof the/invention is to provide a double acting wrench whereby asection of pipe may beturne'd 'either'direction, said wrenchbeingprovided with detachable jaws which may be readily removed when worn out and replaced with new ones.

Another"objectof theinvention isto provide a Fwrench ofthe character described which. is specially adapted to be used in screwing and unscrewing collars and other narrow pipe fittings.

A further feature of the invention resides in thenovel arrangement and method of attaching the aws to the handle.

' A still further feature of the invention embodies a grip chain and the method of securing the same around the section of pipe to be turned. 1

With the above and other objects in view,

the invention has particular relation to cer tain novel features*of construction, operat1on and arrangement: of parts, an example of which'is given in this specification and illustrated in thesaccomp'anying drawings, wherein i Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, as applied to a pipe sect-ion. Referring'now more particularly to the draw1ngs,,where1n like numerals of ref-' erence designate similar parts in eachof the figures, the numeral 1 refers to the wrench handle which is preferably formed of steel or some other strong material. and is of a size'at its inner end .to be readily grasped and gradually enlarges toward the otherend. groove l may be dove-tailed and the tongue 6 correspondingly shaped and the jaw 5 locked against lengthwise movement by means ofa key 9 which passes through alined orifices in the handle and also through the tongue 6'.- Any preferred method may be employed to secure said 'j-aw to the handle but the methods shown will usually be found preferable. The free side of thejaw 5 is arcuate and toothed so as to readily engage with the pipe to beturned thereby.

Secured upon eachside the operative end of the handle are two jaws 10, 10. These jaws are secured to the'handle bymeans of the bolt 11, which passes through said jaws and through the handle. the handle is shouldered down on each side, forming the shoulders 12, 12 against which the inner ends of the jaws l0, 10,-respectively, rest and the portions of said-jaws which project beyond, the end of said handle are thickened, thus forming the shoulders 1.3, 13, which are carried by the jaws l0 and against which the end of the U handle 1 abuts. The jaws 10 are thus locked b said shoulders a ainst turnin relative to the handle. The forward or projecting ends of thejaws 10 are toothedyso as to on gage with the pipe to be turned thereby. A grip chain let is provided, one end of which is attached to the enlarged end of the handle. This chain is of the type ordinarily employedin devices of this kind, wherein the pintels 15 project past the side plates 16, which construction adapts the chain to fit intothe slot 3 between the hooks 2 while the ends of the pintles project out laterally a sufficient distance to engage the inner sides of said hooks. Thevchain 14 is thus secured around the pipe and when the pipe section is to be turned in one direction, the jaw will be employed and when it is to be turned in the other direction the wrench may be shifted so that the jaws 10 may be brought into T engagement with the pipe without releasing the grip chain. This form of wrench is specially adapted to be used. in screwing pipe fittings and colla rs and the like on to pipe sections. This use is illustrated in Fig. (3. Such fittings, as 12%, are usually narrow and the jaws 10 are spaced too, far apart to engage therewith. 1n screwing and unscrewing such fittings, the jaw may be en'iployed and this jaw will. readily engage with such collars or fittings however narrow they may be. This feature constitutes one of the chief features of this form of wrench, because the ordinary pipe wrench now in common use cannot be used for such purposes. It is further to be noted that while I have shown the jaws 5 and 10 detachable either or all of them may be made integral with the handle by dropilorging and milling the jaws to the desired shape, or otherwise lorming them by any approved. method of casting or machining.
