UNITE STATES ATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP I. SAUNDERS, OF ASHLAND, VIRGINIA.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP I. SAUNDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Hanover and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Olothes-Driers, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of the invention is to increase the efliciency of clothes driers and especially the heads thereof, so that the frictionbetween the bearing parts of the head may be reduced to a minimum and the arms arranged so that the device will occupy a minimum of space when not in use.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 1s a slde elevation of the device showmp; certain of the arms inoperative position while others are shown in the position they will occupy when the device is not in use. Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1 partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section of the head.
The standard 5 has a base preferably formed of a plurality of radially extending feet 6. The standard may be of any desired height and any number of the heads about to be described together with the clothes carrying; arms, arranged thereon.
(6 indicates one of the heads which comprises a sleeve 7 adapted to loosely receive the standard 5 and be adjustably secured thereto in any preferred manner such as by set screws 8.
9 indicates a circular bearing flange at one end of the sleeve 7. This flange forms a base for the cylinder 10 which loosely receives the sleeve 7 so as to rotate thereon and on the flange 9.
11 indicates a circular flange at one end of the cylinder 10, and 12 a plurality of radially disposed tubular sockets formed with the flange 11. The sockets 12 are provided with bayonet slots 13 and the clothes carrying arms 14 are adapted at one end to be inserted into the sockets 12 and have radially extending pins 15 adapted to interlock with the sockets by turning the said pins so as to move intoone side of the bayonet slots 13.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Aug. 18, 1914:.
Serial No. 650,189.
16 indicates a series of vertical openings in the upper face of the flange 11. These openings extend through the flange 11 so as to permit of the extension of the arms 14: therethrough, the pins 15 being adapted to rest upon the flange to thereby limit the sliding movement of the arms in one direction. When the arms are in the openings 16, as shown in Fig. 1, they extend downward and parallel with the standard 5, thus allowing the device to be stored in a corner of a room or in a relatively small closet when not in use.
The sockets 12 insure relatively large bearing surfaces for the arms 14, thus preventing sagging of. the arms under the weight of the clothes thereon while the interlocking structure afforded by the bayonet slots and pins 15 positively prevents accidental displaccment of the arms.
Although I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the specific arrangement and construction of parts since various changes may be made, within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrlficing any of the advantages of the invention.
What I claim as new is:
In a clothes drier, the combination of a standard. a sleeve provided with a flange upon its lower ends, adj ustably secured upon said standard, a rotatable cylinder surroundingsaid sleeve and bearing upon the flange thereof; said cylinder having a c1rcular flange upon its upper end provided with vertical openings, tubes provided with bayonet slots projecting radially from said circular flange and arms provided with pins to engage the bayonet slot in said tubes to prevent displacement of said arms substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP I. SAUNDERS.
