RAZOR.
`blade from being damaged when closed,
while at the same time permitting the handle to be kept in a clean and sanitary condition. i
Another object is to provide means for locking the blade in its closed position and preventing it from being accidentally opened. j
Another object `is to provide a device of this character in which the blade is automatically Ouided to enter the handle centrally with respect to vthe Side portions thereof.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings showing an illustrative embodiment of this invention, and in which the same reference numeral refers to similar parts in the several figures: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the razor, the blade being shown in an open position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, the blade being shown opened and extending at approximately right angles with the handle. Fig. 3 is a sectional View, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line AHA, Fig. 2.
In the illustrative embodiment of the invent-ion shown in the drawings, the handle of the razor is formed from a blank of sheet metal bent` at its middle to form side portions l and 2, and a bottom portion 3. The edges of the blank are stamped or Otherwise bent to form corrugations or ribs 4, which strengthen the handle, and at the same time provide a smooth surface for the edges of the side portions, whereby the razor may be handled without danger of injuring the hand from rough metal edges. The bottom portion 3 forms a guard, as it prevents the introduction between the side portions of the handle of anything which might injure the cutting edge of the blade. In order to hold the side portions l and 2 in position, the handle is provided at each end with a re- Specication of Letters Patent.

movable fastening screw. At its outer end the fastening means comprises a screw 5 and a nut G, of any suitable construction. At the other end the fastening means comprises a screw 7 and a nut 8, the latter of which is preferably formed elongated, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, whereby it may engage the ribs 4, and `be prevented from turning thereby as the screw 7 is inserted or withdrawn. It is of course understood that the screw 7 passes through a suitable perforation in the shank 9 of the razor blade l0, thereby forming a pivot upon which the razor blade may be turned inthe usual manner.
In order to facilitate the cleaning of the interior of the handle to render the same sanitary, the bottom portion 3 is provided# `If however, a more careful cleaning j is deemed necessary, the screws 5 and 7 may be removed from the ends of the handle, thus permitting the side portions 1 and 2 to spring apart, if the handle is made from resilient metal, or to be spread apart if the handle is made of non-resilient metal.
When the side portions have assumed such` a position, abrush or other suitable cleaning implement may readily be inserted between them, and the entire inner surface of the handle may be thoroughly cleaned and dried. After cleaning, the side portions are forced inward, and the screws 5 and 7 and their associated nuts 6 and 8 are again It will also be understood that by means of the removable screw 7, a new blade may be substituted for the old one whenever desired.
In order to prevent the accidental opening of the blade, the inwardly bent edges of the side portions are provided with extensions 12, l2, which are formed integral with the handle and are flush with the edge thereof, thus being concealed and providing that there will be no upwardly extending portion which might interfere with the handling of the razor when using it. These eX- tensions 12, which we positioned at the portion of the handle whlch receives the shank of the blade, serve to guide the blade to enter the handle centrally with respect to the side portions.
Assuming the blade to be in its open posi.-V
in but will also tend to center the blade` with respect to the handle. The position assumed by the side portions as the shank engages the extensions 12, is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. As the shank enters the handle, the side portions, which have been separated, as explained above, will resume their normal positions, in which the extensions 12 overlap the upper surface of the .shank 9, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3, lthereby effectually locking the blade Within the4 handle, and preventing the accidental opening thereof. When it is desired to use 'the razor, a slight downward pressure 0n the outwardly extending portion 13 of the blade will be suficient to cause the blade to open. l/Vhile, of course, the handle may be formed of any suitable metal, I prefer to form it of a resilient metal in order that upon removal 0f the screws 5 and 7, the said portions 1 and 2 will automatically spring apart to afford access to the interior of the handle for cleaning purposes.
Having described this invention in con- Y the appended claim In a razor, in combination, a blade and a handle therefor comprising side portions, each side portion lbeing provided with an inwardly extending locking member flush with the front edge .ofl said side portion for locking the blade .in its closed position, said locking members being positioned at the portion of the handleV which receives the shank of the blade whereby as the razor is closed said members will engage the Vshank of the blade before the blade enters the handle and thereby guide the blade to enter the handle centrally with respect to the` sides thereof, each of said lockingmembers being relatively immovable with respect to its as'- sociated side portion.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
