ALICE LYELL MANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
C OLLAPSIIBLE GARMENT-HANGER SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedAug. 18, 1914.
Application filed March 15. 1913. Serial No. 754,479.
To all whom it may camera Be it known that I, Amen LYELL MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Garment-Hanger Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in supports for garment hangers adapted to be madeto assume a compact form such that it may be conveniently carried by the traveler in a trunk and readily assembled for use in connection with a wardrobe or a closet, or otherwise, in a hotel on placeof sojourn where facilities for the neat disposition of the garments of the traveler are absent.
Travelers, and more particularly ladies, often find an utter lack of convenience at hotels and other stoppin places for the appropriate disposition of their garments, and this invention is designed to provide a garment hanger support which may be collapsed into compact form so that it may be easily carried by the traveler from place to place in a trunk and may be very quickly and easily assembled for use.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the features hereinafter described and set forth in the claim appended to the description.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, illustrating the garment hanger support of my invention assembled for use, as, for example, spanning the space between the opposite side walls of a closet, and garment hallgers supported thereby. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing one end of the support and the bracket to which it is remo-vably attached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the several members of the support nested together in compact form.
In describing the invention its use in a closet lacking proper facilities will be referred to, although it is apparent that it may be similarly used in a wardrobe, or, indeed, in other positions in a room. as, for instance, in connection with the opposite vertical jambs of a doorway or window, or the like.
In the said drawing, the reference numeral 1 designate a fractional illustration of the side walls of a closet, and 2 brackets removably secured thereto as by means of screws or similar detachable fastening devices 3 and havin lateral or horizontal arms 4 which may suitably braced, as at The horizontal arm of each bracket car ries a vertical post (5 suitably spaced from the vertical member 2 of the bracket to afford accommodation for the hereinafter referred to hanger support, and these posts, as shown, are screw-threaded at their free ends for the reception of a nut or other suitable binder to hold the garment hanger support immovable in place when assembled in relation thereto, as, in use.
It is common experience that the closets or wardrobes of hotels are of different width, and so also the distance between the jambs of a door or the like varies, and to compensate for this difference or variation my garment hanger supportis composed of a series of tubular metallic sections 7 capable of being adjusted within the minimum and maximum capacity thereof to accommodate itself to the posts of the bracket supports irrespective of the distance between the walls or other fixtures to which said brackets are attached. Each of the sections comprising the support is of equal length (see Fig. 4) and it is designed that the length shall be such that when the sections are nested 'together the support as an entirety shall be of a length which may be very convenient for disposing in the trunk of the traveler, and also not too long for use in closets or wardrobes of small size or width between the walls. Each section 7 of the support is provided near its opposite end with diametrically opposite registering apertures 8 for the reception of the bracket posts (5; and the apertures 8 of the respective tubular sections may he brought into register for the reception of a bolt or the like 9, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the purpose of this being that when, as will he often the case, the support is assembled in a position where the utilization of two and a greater or less proportion of the length of a third, intermediate, section is necessary, the apertures 8 may be brought into register and the bolt 9 passed therethrough to stiffen the support there and prevent possible movement of the intermediate section or sections, which movement, if not guarded against, might result in the intermediate sections separating which would result in the disruption of the unitary support.
It will be observed that my improved garment hanger support may be used in the collapsed or folded condition illustrated in Fig. l, where the distance between the perforations 8 accords with the distance between the posts of the brackets when fixed for use; also that where the distance between said posts is greater the middle or inner section of the support may be extended whatever length may be necessary within the scope of the distance between the perforations 8 thereof plus the distance between the pen forations S oftho outermost section, to ac eommodate the support to the. distance between the bracket posts, and if the space to be spanned is greater, as is often and perhaps most usually the case, than can be taken care of by two telescopic sections the third is brought into use, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and a :t'urther adjustment is secured, as this intermediate section may be withdrawn from the outermost section to any desired degree required by the occasion. hen but one section is used, or when but two sections are used, the attachment of the sections to the bracket posts holds the said sections in extended condition against any inter-relative movement: but, when three or more sections are brought into play, then, in order to provide against movement of the intermediate sections, the perforations 8 thereof are brought into register and a securing device, such as the bolt 9, passed through the registering perforations and held there as by a nut 10. This effectually guards against any objectionable movement, and, furthermore, stiiiens the support intermediate the end sections which are connected to the bracket posts.
My improved garmenthanger support is designed to be constructed of thin sheet or other suitable metal, so that it Will be light of weight, strong and steady in use, and so that there will be no appreciable or objectionable differentiation in. the diameters of the several sections when extended for use, as shown in Fig. 1.
The sections 7 while of different diameters are each of uniform diameter throughout its length, both interiorly and exteriorly, and
asthe perforations 8 through the ends of the sections are the same distance from said ends, the several sections of a support may be assembled or nested irrespective of the end inserted. After nesting the sections 7 to prevent separation thereof and to prevent loss of the connecting bolt 9, the latter may be inserted through the registering perforations 8 in one end of the several sections and the nut 10 screwed thereon, or a bolt may be inserted in the perforations in each end if two bolts are employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:-
The combination with outstanding brackets having straight upwardly projecting posts on their ends of uniform diameter and threaded at their extremities, and means for securing said brackets in position, of a garment hanger support composed of a series of straight tubular telescopic sections of equal length, each sect-ionbeing of uniform diameter interior-1y and exteriorly for its entire length to permit extension of said support at either end, and provided adjacent its ends with diametrically opposed perforations equally spaced from said ends and of a size to easily fit over said posts, so that when the support is fully collapsed the perforations in the several sections will register and may be attached to said bracket posts, and when extended to any desired distance in. either direction the perforations in the ends of the extreme sections may be engaged on said bracket posts, a nut on the threaded end of each post to retain the hanger support thereon, and a fastening bolt to enter said registering perforations and hold the support collapsed, or when extended to be placed in the perforations in one or the other end of the intermediate section and the inner end of an extreme section to lock said sections against movement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALICE- LYELL MAN N. Vl it-nesses WM. Honors MANN Rivas B. HARDY.
