'SIMON NORTON, OF LOSl ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSGNOR TO SAMUEL T. NORTON, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
DESK-CLAMP.
nioaaaa Specification of Letters Patent. :Patented Aug. lig, 1914:'.
Application filed July 7, 1913. Serial No. 777,737.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SrMoN NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Desk-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to desk clamps, and the principal object is to provide a combined i desk clamp and attachment t0 support an abrading surface in connection therewith.
It is also an object to provide a desk clamp to secure articles in relation to a table or desk, as a table cloth or papers, together with a plate to receive heated articles.
lt is a further object to provide a desk clamp, the clamping members of which are separable and adapted to secure between these separable portions a sheet or strip of abrading material for various purposes.
ln the drawings accompanying this speci fication and forming therewith the application for Letters Patent: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined clamp. Fig. 2 is an end view showing the latter secured to a table, the lower section being nailed thereto. Fig. 3 is a View of the inside face of the end of t-he upper clamping member. Fig. l is a plan view, partly in section, on the line 4 4 of 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4l, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
More specifically in the drawings, 6 designates the top of a desk or table to which has been secured the lower member 7 of the improved combined desk clamp, fastening means being shown as a nail 8, which is passed through apertures 9 in the metal composing this member. rlhis lower member 7 is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal of the general configuration shown, having the upturned flange or end 10, which forms the securing means for retaining the upper member 11 in relation thereto. This upper member 11 is provided with a depending portion 12 which is preferably formed at right angles thereto to agree with the right angled flange 10 on the lower 1nember, the extending ends of this flange 12 being bent around to form spring clamping members or fingers 14C which embrace the ends of the flange 10.
The upper clamping member 11 is preferably of larger size than the lower member and the material is of such resiliency that it is readilv clamped on the edge of the table and will clamp atable cloth or other article as papers in fixed relation to the table top. rlfhe outer or edge portion 12 is preferably provided with an elongated open ing to permit of the exposure of av sheet of abrading material 15 which may be used for striking matches or sharpening pencils, this sheet or strip of abrading material being held in position by spring lingers 16 which are formed integral with the top clamp member 11 and form a resilient bearing as well against the flange 10 in opposition to the spring clamping members 14 to secure the two members 10 and 12 in frictional contact.
In the operation of the device the two members are preferably secured together after the abrading material has been inserted and then slipped into engagement when the nail or thumb tack S is introduced so that the clamp is not readily or accidentally removed from its engagement with the table.
llhat l claim is:
1. A desk clamp, comprising a pair of coacting spaced members having overlapping flanges formed thereon, spring ngers on the flange of one of said members slidably engaging the flange on the other member to permit `adjustment of the members in relation to each other, and a plurality of spring fingers interposed between the overlapped flanges opp osing the before-mentioned spring fingers.
2. A desk clamp, comprising a pair of spaced plates having overlapping flanges formed thereon in slidable contact with each other, spring finge 1s on the end of the flange on one of said plates turned around the ends of the flange on the other plate to frictionally engage the latter and clamp the plates in adjustable relation to each other, and upturned spring lingers on the outermost flange interposed between the flanges opposing the end spring ngers and coperating therewith to clamp the inner flange.
3. A desk clamp, comprising a pair of separable members of sheet metal having right angled extensions thereon, one of said extensions being apertured and having fingers on its outer edges folded upon itself to form clamps slidably engaging the extension on the other member, and fingers on the apertured extension bearing against the other extension and forming a support for sheet material rearward of the apertured eX- tension.
v4. A desk Clamp, comprising a pair of spaced plates having overlapping Hanges formed thereon in slidable Contact with each other, spring fingers on the ends of the fiange on one of said plates turned around the `ends of the flange on the other plate to frietionally engage the latter and clamp the plates in adjustable relation to each other,r
' and upturned spring lingers on the outermost Copies kof.' thisrvpatent may be obtained for fiange interposedl between the flanges opposing'the end spring fingers and cooperating therewith to clamp the inner Hange, said upturned spring lingers serving as a support 15 for a sheet'material rearward of the outer flange, said outer flange being formed with an opening to expose the sheet material.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 28th 20 day of June, 1913.
