FOLDING EGG-CRATE.
monaco.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
)ateiited Alle, 4, 1914.
Application filed January 30, 1913. Serial No. 745,215.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMON E. FISI-mu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopkinton, in the county of St. Lawrence, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Egg-Crates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to folding egg crates and has for an object to provide an extremely simple .device of this character having novel angleiron corner members which perform the dual function of hinges for the collapsible ends and stops for supporting the removable sides in set up position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a folding egg crate which may be set up and collapsed in minimum time and with minimum labor and which when collapsed will occupy minimum space.
With the above Objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specificationz--Figure 1 is a front elevation of the crate set up. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4-4 Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the crate folded. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional View through the crate folded.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the crate consists oit' a bottom board 10 having short upwardly extending side and end strips 11 and 12 secured thereto. Engaged beneath the bottom board and extending upwardly upon the side strips are angle iron straps 13, these straps being arranged near the corners of the device and each having an eye 14 near the top. A pair of angleiron corner members 15 are hinged at the lower ends to the angleiron straps at each end of the device through the instrumentality of pivot pins 16 passed through the openings 14 and through registering openings 17 formed in the corner members whereby the latter may be either folded down to rest upon the side strips 11 or to extend upwardly from the side strips. Secured between corresponding corner meinbers are end boards 1S which when the corner members are extended upwardly rest at their lower edges upon the upper edges of the end strips l2 and which when the corner members are folded down, rest upon the upper edges of side strips 1l.
The end boards have angleiron cars 19 secured to their inner faces in spaced relation to the corner members, thus producing small spaces to receive side boards 20 which are disposed with their lower edges upon the upper edges of the side strips 11.
The end boards 1S have eyes 21 secured thereto and proj cctin(r outwardly therefrom. A cover 22 is providid with cleats 23 near the ends of the bottom face which cleats bear terminally against the side boards when the crate is set up and reinforce the crate against collapsing inwardly. Leaf hinges 94 are secured to the ends of the cover, the free leaf of each hinge being equipped with a slot 25 to receive the eye 21 of the related end board, and to lock the cover in operative position a. locking wire such as is shown at 26 is passed through the eye outside of the leaf.
To collapse the crate the side boards 20 are withdrawn vertically and then placed flat within the inclosure of the side and end strips 1l and 12. The end boards are now folded inwardly and bear flat upon the top edges of the side strips. The cover is now placed upon the folded end boards, there beingrecesses 27 in the bottom face of the cover to receive the eyes 521. The free leaves of the hinges are now rocked down upon the outer faces of the end strips 12 and the slots therein passed over eyes 28 disposed on said end strips. The locking wires 26 are now applied to these latter eyes to hold the crate in collapsed position.
From the above description itwill be seen that I have provided an extremely simple and strong folding crate in which the angleiron corner members hingedly secure the end boards in position and by fitting down upon the side strips when the crate is folded prevent lateral displacement of the ends during rough usage, while further these corner members form means for supporting the side boards in set up position.
that is claimed, is
In a crate of the class described, a bottom board provided with an upwardly extending peripheral flange forming end and side pieces, Straps extending across the bottom of Said board at each end thereof and terminating in upwardly extending ears, fold ing end pieces provided with angle irons at their side edges, said angle irons having downwardly extending portions received between said ears and the side flanges of the 10 bottom member, and bolts passing through said ears, side flanges of the bottom member, and downwardly extending portions of the angle irons.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of t-Wo Witnesses.
HERMON E. FISI-IER IVitnesses JASON J. LIVERMON, HENRY W. LIVERMOER.
