Application filed July 17, 1909. Sciiol No. 508,241.
To all whom it may concern .invonted certain new and useful improve ments in Undci'fromcs for Cars, of which the following is o. specification.
Ari ohjocr; of the present invcntion is to provide a new and improved steel underframe for cars, locomotivo tenders, and the like, in which the principle of the contalivcr is applied.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of an integral casting" or portion comprising a body-bolstcr, which casting is adapted to extend for uitc a distance forwardly and rcorivordly of the truckbolster of a touch, and may in mldition to'thc body-holster comprise an end sill and the entire end-portions of the 1mdcrframe.
A still further object, of this invention is the provision of a beam or ccntocsill of contaliver constmchion that may he omploycd as o' portion of the undoi'frame of a car.
In the accompanying" drawings: which illustrate applications of my invention, Figure 1, is a perspective View of chi-body undcxframe embodying my invention, with the connecting or middle section portly.
broken away; Fig. 2, a. port side elevotionol and a par; sectionol view of the four: of Fig. 1; Fig. 3,' an cnd-vicw; Fig. l on in varied perspective view of one of tho end sections or portions; Fig. 5, abrokcn porspective View showing a modified middle or connecting section; Fig. 6, o, pci's'icctivc view of a modified. form of o cor lioc y undoll-frame, constructed in accordance. with my invcnlvion; Fig. 7, o cen'nl longitudinal.
sectional view of the form oi Fig. 6; Fig. 8 a. sectional View taken on line V Ill- V I 11' of Fig. "I; Fig. 9, an inverted perspective View of one of the and sections shown in the form of Fig. 6; Fig. 10, a port side clovctional and :1 part sectional view of a locum constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 11, apart plan and a port sectional view of the boom shown hyFig. l0.
This invention may ho employed in lhc construction of various kinds of cars, i ndcrs, and. the like; in the drawings, however,
I have particularly shown emhod i nlonts of of steel undcrfrnines for can; in which tho principle of the canl'oli'vcl' is applied.
Lln the form of my invention as shown by Fig. 1, 2 and 3 designate ond-portions or sections each formed with n body-holslci- 4, side-sills 5, and ond sills (5, control nicmhui's '7, extending foiwvm'dly and i-cai'wnrdlg," of the hodvbolstcr and a floor 8. Emil-portions or sections; 2 and?! are dosignczi lo be supported by their respective bolsters upon truck-bolsters. not shown, and to oiztond from both sidcs of the truck-holsters :i'or a, considerable and substantially the scmc dis touch, lhercby producing a substantially bailnncod sii-ucturc having: its hearing on tho ccntor plate of the triu'lohoh-sicr of ihe cor. The inner-ends of he sections 2 and 3 susmin a middle Section 9, which lather connects the two end-portions.
In the form of Fig. 5 I have shown several connccting bars 9 in place of the integral Slilllfitllll} 9 shown by Fig l. W
long. 6, shows a modified TOP! of cod sections from chose of Fig. l, and somewhat different moons for connccling said sections, but this form of my invention, it will of course he noted. retains the principle of the cmitalivcr.
' In the form of Fig. 10, I show a beam designed to he used for o center sill of a. car-undcrfrnme in which the principle of tho contolivcr also applied. In this construction 2" and 3 designate the. end-portions and 9 thc middle or connecting member.
As illustrated, I have shown the bodyoolsicrs formed with center-bearings 10 and side-bcorings ill. but these parts may he made separate if preferred.
aAs shown by Fig. 1, the end-portions Q and 3 may have formed integral therewith car sidewalls 12 and on end-wall 13. As shown, these walls are not of grout height, but it is evident; that they may be extended to a much greater height than shown.
What I claim is:
