A further object offthe present invention is to rovide a construction comprising anunder ame having 1n an lntegralmetalllcto support longitudinally extending carbody sills and having its center and sidesills provided with means for supporting end-members constituting end-sills of the car-body.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate applications of my invention, F igure 1 is a side elevational view of a part of a car and underframe embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a plan view ofthe underframe and portions of the longitudinally extending sills and end-member of the car-body, the latter being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 3, a side elevational view of the underframe; Fig. 4, a sectional View taken on line IV'IV of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a detail end view of the underframe and separable car member; Fig. 6, a sectional view taken on line VIVI of Fig. 2; Fig. '7, a perspective view of the underframe of a larger size than that shown by the form of Fig. 1, and Fig. 8, a detail view showing a modified form of car body and underframe construction from that shown in the form of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, and first to the form of Fig. 1, which illustrates my invention embodied in a four-wheel railway caboose construction 2 designates the side-sills or side longitudinal members of the car-body, and hand 4; intermediate longitudinally extendlng si'lls,-a'nd '5 separable cross end-members constituting "end-members of the car-body and end members of the car-body underframe. The members mentioned may be constructed of wood or metal. I prefer wooden members, but it is evident that metal members may'be employed. The car-body ends 6, the sides 7, and the floor 8 are built up in the usual manner.
My underframe for the car illustrated by Fig. 1 or for other forms of cars is preferably formed of an integral cast-metal structure and comprises a center-sill 9-extendin substantially'the full'length of the car an formed at each end with projecting members 10 designed to-exten'd under and support the separable end-members 5. The integral underframe also comprises side-sills or sidemembers 11,:said sills having free or non- 1 connected ends and each preferably constituting a member of considerable depth. The
free ends of said sills are each provided with a projecting supporting or bearing member 12 adapted toextend under and support the separable end-members 5. Members 11 are provided with flat bearing faces 13 adapted to receive and support the respective longitudinal members 3. The side-members 11 are connected with the center-sill by crossmembers 14 and diagonal members 15, the latter having a plate member 16 formed with projections 17. The projections 17 are designed to enter the respective sills 4 of the car-body and the plate members 16 are adapted to act as a support for said sills 4. The length of the metallic underframe is substantially the same as the length of the car but of considerably less width. I have shown pedestals 18 formed integral with the side-members of the underframe. These pedestals, however, and the hangers 19 and 20 may be separable and secured to said side-members.
The underframe of the form of Fig. 1 is designed to be supported by the pedestals 18 in place of being supported upon truck bolsters as is the usual and well known construction.
In the form of my invention illustrated by Fig. 7, I have shown an underfra 1e designed for much larger car-bodies than that shown in the form of Fig. 1, and in this instance have shown the integral underframe having its center-sill provided with a centerplate bearing 21 adapted to rest upon the center bearing 22 of a truck-bolster.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with a car underframe comprising an integral metallic structure including a center-sill and parallel side-sills, said sills having free non-con nected end portions with the end portions formed with bearing members, diagonal members projecting from the center-sill toward the ends of the respective side-sills and merging with the side-sills at points short of the ends of said sills, separable car-body endsills supported by the projecting members and extending beyond the side-sills of the underframe, car-body side-sills supported by the separable end-sills, and intermediate carlbody sills supported by the diagonal memers.
2. The combination, with a car underframe comprising an integral metallic structure including a center-sill and parallel sidesills, said sills having free non-connected end-portions with the end-portions formed with hearing members, diagonal members each formed with a sill bearing member, said diagonal members projecting from the center-sill toward an end of the respective side-sills and merging with the side-sills at points short of the ends of the said slde sills, separable car-body end-sills supported sills, said end-sills adapted to support the I side-sills, of an underframe comprising an integral metallic structure of less width than the car-body, said underframe includ ing a center-sill, side-sills, diagonal members projecting from the center-sill toward an end of the respective side-sills and merging with the side-sills at points short of the ends of said side-sills, and pedestals formed integral with the side-sills, said center and side-sills having projecting supporting members for the car-body end-sills, and the diagonal members having bearings for the carbody intermediate sills.
