Specification of Letters Patent.

To all Inkom t may concern i Be it known that I,'J0HN M. ROHLFING, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, and being a citizen of the United States, Ahave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underframes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wh1ch illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof Will occur to persons'skilled in the art. l
In said drawings: Figure l is a plan View of the end portion of an underframe embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, Fi 3 is a longitudinal, vertical, central section. Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse vertical sections taken respectively on the planes indicated by lines 4-4 and 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fi 6 is a detail vertical section taken on the p ane indicated by line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
In carrying outvthe preferred embodiment 'of the present invention, an end section of underframe is provided which comprises a bolster and end sill and diagonal braces, all cast integral and designed to receive side `and centerlsills of commercial, rolled shapes for producing a unitary underframe structure.
The structure is especially adapted for use where it is desirable to have the bufling shocks distributed in part to the side sills between the bolster and end sill. This distribution obviously relieves the diagonal braces of some of the strain to which they would otherwise be subjected, and thus the diagonal braces may be reduced to a minimum section, and a more effectual and uniform balance in the distribution of metal may be provided in all arts of the castin and the end section ren ered ri id throng out, without the employment o parts of excessive weights.
Referring to the details,.A is the bolster which is cast integral withA the diagonal bn'aces- B--B, the outer ends of which braces are cast integral with the end sills C in the rear of the buflin portion thereof., Rolled Z section center s1 ls Df-D 'and similar side sills E-E, connect the bolster and end sill as hereinafter mentioned.
End sill C comprises a vertical web 1 having upper flange 3 and lower flange 4. Web 1 is formed centrally with the usual draw bar opening, and tapers therefrom to its` ends. Flange 3 pro ects outwardly from and extends long1tu inally of the up er edge of the web, and tapers from buflin portion 2 of the end sill to the ends thereo Flan e 4 extends horizontally inwardly in the p anes of the lower portions of braces B said flange 4 terminating at the point of union of the diagonal braces B with the end sill, the flange 4 thus being divided into two sections, the inner end of each section being formed integral with, and continuous of the respective lower flan e of the given diagonal brace B. A push poe pocket 6 is formed integral with each end of and extends outwardly from the sills C, and, in the rear of each of said pockets the flange 4 is widened and formed integral with a bracket 5providing a seat for the end of the respective side sills E, said side sill abutting against the end sill and having its flanges riveted to the bracket 5 and flange 4.
Each brace B comprises a vertical web 7, an upper flange 9, and lower flange 8, the upper flanges of said braces' having their outer ends formed integral with a connecting web 9 immediately in the rear. of the buffer 2, which web 9 connects the braces B B and likewise connects said braces with the end sills. V
The bolster A is substantially U-shape in general cross section comprising a bottom web portion 9, vertical flan es or walls 10 and lateral flanges 11. `T e forward or outer flange 11 is formed integral with and continuous of the inner ends of the up er flanges of the dia onal braces B-B. he vertical walls 10 o the bolsterI are connected by cross webs 12-12 and are formed"cen 4 trally with flanged openings 13 for the passage therethrough of the center sills'D, D, said sills bein riveted to the outer flanges 13 and likew1se to the inner flanges 13b or cross connecting walls which latter are best shown in Figs; 1 and 3 whereby said `center sills serve as connectors for the bolster Walls near t-he middle of said bolster. It will be noted that the connecting flanges or Walls 13b are of less height than the general bolster structure, thus permitting the top flange of the Z-shaped center sills, to overlap said walls while the outer flanges 13a terminate above the opening 18, thus'permitting the lower, flanges of said sills to underlie said flanges 13a, as best. shown in F ig. 4. It will be noted that the center sills D, D, are continuous through the bolsters to the end sills.
A bolster filler casting liln is formed integral with the walls 'of the bolster between the c enter sills, and extends downwardly to form a center bearing 15. The ends of the bolster are formed with seats "for" snuglyreceiving the side sills, each of such seats comprising an outstanding portion 16 of the web of the bolster underlying the lower flange of the respective side sills, an .integral, vertical cross web 17 connecting the side walls" of the bolster, and a horizontal cross web 18 also connecting said side walls and being formed integral with the upper edge of the vertical web 17A and projecting laterally of the bolster as shown in Fig.' 1. Said web 18 is depressed below the upper edge of the main portion of the bolster for receiving the upper flange of the respective side sill. i

The inner verticalwall of bolster A is 50 provided intermediate its length, between center and side sill, with inwardly extending flanges forming pockets 20, 20, for -re ceiving they ends of longitudinal nailing strips 21 and the outer vertical wall of said bolster is formed with similar pockets 22, 22, for-receiving the inner ends of short stringers 23, 23, which stringere are interrupted intermediate their length by the vdiagonal braces B,- the ends of such interrupted portions resting in pockets 24 and 25 formed in s'aid brace. The outer ends of the outer sections of stringers 23 engage pockets 26 vopening inwardly from the inner face of sill C.
'i hat I claim is In'a car underframe, a unitary structure comprising a bolster, braces cast integral therewith and provided with Stringer pockets, an end sill cast integral with the braces and a separately formed center sill connecting the bolster to the end sill.
-2. In a car underframe, a unitary structure comprising a bolster, braces cast in; tegral therewith and provided with'stringer pockets, an end sill cast integral with the braces, and separately formed center sills ,extending through the bolster and connecting the same to the end sill.

In a car underframe, a unitary structure comprising a bolster, braces cast integral therewith and provided with Stringer pockets, an end sill cast integral with the braces,and separately formed center sills extending beyondthe bolster and abutting against the end sill and connecting the bolster to the end` Si11 v 4. In a car underframe, a unitary'structure comprising -a cast bolster, braces cast integral therewith and provided with Stringer pockets, a cast end sill cast integral with the braces, and rolled center sills extending through the bolster and connected to the bolster and end sill. l

In a car undertrame, a unitary structure comprising a cast bolster, braces cast integral therewith, a cast end .sill cast iny tegral with said braces and provided with Stringer pockets, and separately formed side and center sills extending beyond the bolster and abutting against 'the end sill.'
6. In an underframe, the combination of a bolster, end sill and diagonal braces and provided with stringer pockets connecting the end -sill and bolster' and cast integraly therewith, and separately formed means connecting the bolster and end sill for forming a rigid rectangular'frame of the connected parts.
' 7 A bolster substantially U-shape in cross section, the vertical walls of the bolster being provided with Stringer pockets and .terminating short of the ends of the web, and vertical webs connecting the vertical walls at the ends thereof and extending upwardly from the outstanding portions of the first mentioned web and terminating in horizontal cross webs connecting said vertical walls, said webs being dimensioned totit side sills-of -Z section.
8. In an underframe, the combination of -a bolster comprising a body portion substantially U-shaped in cross section, the vertical walls of the bolster terminating short of the ends of the web, a vertical web connecting the vertical walls at each end thereof and extending upwardly from the outstanding ortion of the first mentioned web and termmating in a Horizontal cross web connecting said verticall walls, said webs bemg dlmensioned 'to tit side sills of Z section.
9. In an underframe, the combination of a bolster comprising a body portion substantially U-shape in cross section, the vertical walls of' the bolster terminating Short of the ends of the web thereof, and vertical webs connecting the vertical walls at the ends thereof and extending upwardly from thev outstandinfr portions of the first mentioned web an( terminating in horizontal cross webs connecting said vertical walls, said webs being dimensioned to fit side sills of Z section, an end sill, diagonal braces formed integral with the end sill and with said bolster, and side sills of Z section having ltheir lower flanges fixed to the first mentioned web of the -bolster and their upper flanges fixed to the said horizontal cross webs, the said side sills extending and being fixed to the end sill.
10. An end sill comprising a Vertical web, an integral horizontal flange extending inwardly therefrom, stringer ockets above i Said flange a bracket exten ing inwardl from the inner face of each end of the vertical web and each comprising a horizontal and a. vertical web both formed integral with the first mentioned vertical web and the vertical web of each bracketbeing also formed integral with said flange, a portion of the flange at each end and the respective bracket being dimensioned to snugly receive a side sill of Z section.
11. In an underframe, the combination ofl an end sill having inwardly extending flanges forming stringer pockets anda longtudinally extending horizontal flange, and
a bracket at each end of the end sill formed' integral with the end sill and its flange, each of the brackets with the respective end portion of the flange being dimensioned to snugly receive a side sill of Z section, a bolster', braces formed vintegral with the bolster and the end sill, and side sills of Z section fixed to the bolster and fixed to said brackets and endV portions ofthe flanges of the end sill.
12. In an underframe, the combination of an end sill having a bufling block, a bolster, diagonal braces formed integral with the ends of the bolster and with the end sill in the rear of the bufling block, and separately formed sills connecting the ends of the bolster to the ends of the end sill, said end sill and said bolster each being formed with .Stringer pockets.
13. In an underframe, the combination pocket, an end sill havin with a bolster an end sill, and. diagonal braces formed integral with the bolster and with the end sill and having flanges connected by an integral web, each of said members being formed with Stringer pockets.
14. In an underframe, the combination of a bolster having a flange dipped downwardly to form Stringer pockets, an end sill, and diagonal braces formed integral with the end sill and bolster and having flanges formed integral with the flange of the bol- Ster.

17. In an underframe, a bolster, an end silland diagonal braces connecting the end sill and bolster, each of said braces comprising a Z-section having oppositely opening Stringer pocketsl formed integral therewith intermediate the ends of the section.
18. In an underframe, a cast bolster comprising side walls perforated for the passage therethrough of continuous center sills and a connecting member therefor, one of said walls being formed with inwardly opening Stringer pockets, and the other wall being formed with outwardly opening Stringer' pockets.
19. In a car a car underframe, the combination comprising an integral end sill, di agonal braces and a bolster, Said bolster being provided with through openings for the passage of center sills and with vertical walls or flanges at opposite sides of each opening for attachment to a center sill and center sills extending through said openings, said center sills being connected with said bolster walls and with Said end sill.
