Be it knownthat 1, JAMES E. M. Bnoonn, a citizeniof the United- States, and resident of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Printers: Galleys, of which the following is a specification.

While my invention is designed to handle the type set on the monotype machine, itis, of course, obvious that any form of type may be set in it, including the linotype.

The present system of handling type is slow, expensive and at all times hazardous. All short takes set must be carried by the casterman from one room to another, and there it is handled again by the bankman. All: the long takes have to be brought in to the same man, the matter side of the galley to the other, another galley placed, and in everyinstancemust be shifted.

The object of my invention is to provide a type galley that will handle all type handled by the galley now in use, but will handle the monotype product:as well, away with all handling or shifting of matter by means of :a detachable head-piece;

also greatly; facilitatin the make-up, as it will do awaywith the lifting of matter; and with these and other objects in view, my invention consists of the partsand combinationof parts as will be hereinafter pointed out.

Thereference numeral. 1 designates the bottom of my improved galley, and 2 the side members thereof. Each side member is provided in its inner face with a double L shaped lot 3 near one end and a vertically its other end,

The detachable head .5 is of a length equal to the distance between the side members between which it extends. This detachable head isprovided on one end witha lu 6 ex: tendinglin the direction of its length and poslitioned about midway between the top anc bottom lineof which is in the plane of the bottom of the head as seen in Fig. 3, whereby it may rest in the bottom portion of the double L-shaped slot 3 when the head is in operative position in the galley.

When the head 5 is locked in position in the galley, it is impossible to displace it accidentally, nor can the weight of the type set in the galley displace it as the walls of v the two grooves constitute abutments for the head beyond which it cannot move except when intentionally manipulated. After matter is set up in this improved galley, it can be removed therefrom by removing the a head 5 joining the galleys and sliding the matter at will from one galley to another.

Another good feature of my improved galley is that the head is always in place, giving it the same appearance of the present form of galley.

It frequently occurs in book ofiices that they have to get out pasters or large tables which require a great deal of care and extra hard work forthe make-up, consuming considerable time. My improved galley will eliminate trouble of this character, inasmuch as the head piece may be readily removed and the matter slid from one galley to another in perfect safety.

Of course, it will be understood that the head piece may be used with equal efliciency at either end. of the galley,
