To all 'whom'z't may concern:
Be itl known that I, SIMON M. CoLLiNs, a citizen of the United States, residin at Pueblo, in' the county of Pueblo and btate of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Levels, of .which the followin is a specification. y
Thisinvention relates 'to a level which is adapted especially for use in determining the exact inclinatlon of surfaces, such as the roofs of buildings, or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a level including a body having straight edees, a spirit tube mounted upon a rotatable plate carried by the said body, and means associated therewith by 4which the angular position of the tube with respect to the body may be determined when the device 1s'1n use. A. further object is the provision of means associated with the rotatable plate upon which the spirit tube is mounted for use 1n connection with a carpenters square, so that the level may be used in coperation with a square in marking timbers or boards for the purpose of cutting the same at an acute angle. v
A still further object is to provide a d evice of this character which vis simple 1n vconstruction andwhich maybeused with great accuracy 1n the capacities mentioned.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference bein hadto the accom,- panying drawing, in w ich:
. Figure 1 is aside elevation of the device, showing the same `in use for determining the angle of inclination of a'surface; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through a portion of elevation of the device, showing the same in use in connection with a square .for laying out an angular cut on a piece of timber. Fig. 4 is a detail view o f the device.
In the drawing, the numerall designates the rectangular body of the level which is constructed preferably of wood in the usual manner and iis provided medially in one of its side 'faces with a. circular rec-ess 2 for the reception of a-circular wear late A fiat retainer ring 4 is positione within the recess 2 against the outer face of the plate 3 'andis 0f the same external diameter as the latterf Thev plate 3 and the ring 4 may lie-constructed of any light and durable the device;and, Fig. 3 is a side Patented July 28, 1914.
metal such as aluminum or brass, and they i are both secured Vto the body or stock 1 by means ofthe fastening sc'rews 5. The rin Il 1s provided `on its inner periphery witg an annular flange 6 which is spaced from the outer. face of the plate 3 and isada ted for engagement with lthe annular ange 7 formed on the outer periphery of the r0- tatable disk 8, which latter is mounted within the retainer ring forfrictional engagement with the 'outer face of the wear plate.
A set screw -9 is adjustably mounted within allning openings provided in the rin 4 and,
the wear plate 3 with its enlarge head adapted for engagement with the rotatable:
A spirit tube 10 of any ordinary well known construction is secured to the outer 'face of the rotatable' disk8 intersect-ing the axis of the same, and the outer face of the disk is graduated so as' to define quadrants with 'the longitudinal axis of the spirit tube forming the division line between adjacent pairs of uadrants. likewise divided into quadrants Vwhich are defined by the indicator marks 11 on the outer face thereof, one pair of the op sed 'marks being disposedwithin a` plane intersectin the longltudinal 'axis of tlie'stock l at rig 1t angles tothe plane of the retainer ring. The said indicatormarks are intended to be used in indicating the angularf adjustmnt of the disk 8 with respect to thebody or stock of the` device for all purposes.
In using a levelconstructed in accordance with the invention just disclosed, the stock of the level is rested upon the surface whose angle of inclination is .tobe determined, as shown particularly in Fig. 1, and the set screw t) isfoperated manually so as to release the disk 8. The said disk isl then rotated until the spirit tube is disposed so that it will indicate a level position. When this has been accomplished, the an leof incli The retainer ring is iie
