COMBINATION TOOL.
Continuation of application Serial No. 52,450, filed August'25, 1925. I
' 1926. Serial No. 133,650. q 1
This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in combination tools and more particularly it refers to a tool in which is combined a square, tri-square, mitre, bevel,
level, depth gage, height gage, plumb, pr'otractor, double protractor, dividers, measurp 1s cut-1n the plate or stock and is extendedv ing rule, scriber, marking gage and inclinometer. The present invention is, a continuation of application for Letters Patent filed August. 25, 1925, Serial-No. 52,450.
The combination tool is of such sizethat I it may be conveniently carried, in a workmans pocket, and is so simple that any one not skilled in carpentry or the allied arts in which it may be used, can utilize the tool to advantage.
The invention also includes other and further features, which, together with the above, will be clearly understood from a perusal of the'following detailed description, in connection with the accompanying drawings and wherein:
Figure 1 is'a side elevational view of the combination tool. I
Figure 2 is an edge view, look-ing towards the left edge in Figure 1 of the drawing.
Figure 3 is a view. similar to Figur'e'2, taken from the edge opposite to that shown in Figure 2.
and illustrating the position of the tool when used as a divider or compass.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view,
along line 55 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a sectional detail view, Figure 8'being a sectional detail view along line 88 of Figure 7 and Figure 9 is also a detail sectional view.
Having a more detailed reference to the drawings, wherein similar numerals designate the various parts, 1 denotes a plate or stock, molded of aluminum or similar light metal. The stock has a bevel edge 2 on all inner sides, the edges being extended beyond the main part or body 1 so as to insure a sufficiently wideedge to permit the stock to stand upright more easily. The plate is substantially of square formation, except the edge 3 which forms an angular relation to the right angular-edges, indicated generally at at. The edge 3 extends at .an obtuse angular relation with one portion of the stock or plate adjacent the corner, the corner 5 being edge 3. ng a blade 10, which constitutes a ruling rounded as shown, The stock 1 is bored in- Wardly from the edgesd as indicated at 6 and in the hollows thus formed are placed spirit levels 6 Adjacent. the levels are apertures 8 to enable the levels to be read.
Referring to Figures 3 and 5; a slot 9 at right angles and opens into'the angular This slot is for the purpose of holdelement used in connection with the stock 1. As will be seen, thisblade is slotted at 11 and, a pin 12 fastened across the slot 9, permitting the blade tobe turned at various angles, as indicated in part in Figures 1 and 4. The pin 12 includes ainut- '13 which seats within the recess formed by the extended edges 1 and a small lever 12" locks the blade. 10 in adjusted; position. The blade lO-is out half way through its width, as indicated in Figures 4: and 7 and thecutaway portion forms, a leg 13, the upper end at 14- being pivoted to the rule portion 10 by .a screw. 15. This end of the-leg isrounded as shown. in the drawing to enable it to be moved clear around so that when fully extended it will form as .w1de an angle as desirable. and. used as.a:protractor. The pin 12 canthen be tightenedfto maintain the leg Figure 4 is anotherside elevational. view, fin adjustableposition. In Figured thev tool is shown in position When used as a compass jor divider and when in this position, in order for cutting jack and valley rafters as indi-' cated in Figures 2 and? The measurements shown are for different angles made when the ruling element is brought'to an angular position with these markings and a proper rafter cut is thus made. The angular edge 3 is also provided with markings 3 for use as a mitre cut of material.
The applicants combination tool can be used like any other spirit level for plumbing purposes, by resting its base on the surface This application filed September 4,
ing the length of its base.
stock are several apertures for making to be plumbed and adjusting the surface until the spirit glass reads plumb, and is efficient as long as the object to be plumbed For plumbing.
is not of too great length. long ob ects the tool has a means for extendextensions in plumbing. An extension or straight-edged piece of materialis fastened to the stock by passing a nail or similar element through the material into the apertures. For example, say the tool is used in plumbing a door which is warped in the center, but in plumb at the top and bottom.
If the tool was placed in the center it would show the door out of plumb, but if the tool was properly in alinement with a true extension and placed against the door it would show it in plumb at top and bottom, but
warped in the center. The upper hole20 is large enough to admit of adjustment on the extension.
When used as a protractor, the leg 13 is moved-outward free from the slot 9 to its fullest distance from the blade 10. .This
is done by moving the pin 12 completely to the outer end of the slot 11. On the end 16 of the pin is a projection 21 which is useful as a tightening and releasing element for small screws. To those skilled in any of the arts to which the inventionmay be applied, various other uses may be made of the In the plate or said plate having a slot along one edge, a two-part blade pivoted in the slot and arranged so as to be moved to varied engles with relation to the plate, said plate and said blade having markings to indicate measurements of material to be cut.
2. In a combination tool of the character described, a plate having a slot along one edge, a blade pivoted in the slot and arranged so as to be moved to varied angles with relation to the plate, said plate including members to indicate correctposition of the tool when used as a levelyand said blade being in two separable and pivotally connected parts, one of which includes a pointed leg; said leg and its companion part being adapted to be used as a compass and divider.
3. A combination tool comprising a plate of substantially square formation in outline,
one edge being angular and including spirit levels set at different positions to indicate varied angles and proper levels openings adjacent the spiritlevcls for permitting convenient reading of the levels; said plate having a slot along one edge, a ruling element comprising a two-part blade pivotally arranged in the slot, one of said blade parts having one end rounded and pivotally attached to its companion, the rounded end permitting the blades to be swung freely apart ata Wide angle, when used as brotractor, divider and compass.
4. Atool of the character described, comprising a plate having a slot along one edge, a two-part blade PlVOtGCl'lII the slot, sa1d blade having a perforation in its freecnd,
and a pin removably mountcdin said perioration.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
