To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Darwin Fnnnnion Mo- GovERN, a citizen of the United States, re siding at Montpelier, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing-Vtlmels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to polishing or smoothing wheels that employ spiral ifianges or scrolls to affect the action of the abrasive or smoothing material used, and it improves the arrangement of flanges or sCIOlls' uch as shown, 'for example, in my Pat lit No. 861,476 and that of Pembroke No $0,947. In wheels of this class, there is a tendency of the abrasive or smoothing material to assume an uneven distribution with respect to the rubbing side of the wheels, whereby the efficiency of the devices is lessened, this invention the flanges or scrolls are arranged in such manner that, during rotation of the wheel, the abrasive or smoothing material is distrib uted uniformly over its area and concentration and accumulation at anyparticular place is avoided.
The arrangement of parts contemplated by the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein a preferable embodiment is disclosed, for urposcs of illustration. It is to be understolid, however, that it is not the in tention to be limited necessarily to the exact arrangement disclosed, as it is obvious that such changes asare within the limits of the claims can be made without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention.
Like reference characters refer to corre sponding parts in the views of the drawing, of which .Figure 1 is a side view of a polishingwheel; and Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 3 designates a plate or disk, formed with a central opening 4, and having on its upper side lugs 5 for engagement with a drive-shaft by which the dish is rotated over a surface to be dressed, smoothed, or polished.
Spiral scrolls or flanges 6 are secured to the under side of the disk by any suitable fastening means. The scrolls are placed in eccentric disposition with respect to the disk I and curve gradually inwardly from front to roar, they are spaced apart so that there are channels between them, and they are arranged in sets, the scrolls of each set being disposed in substantially parallel relation to one another from ends to ends. The scrolls of each set from the edge of the disk inwardly for convenience are, referred to herein by the characters a, b, c, and d.

between the rear ends of the scrolls of one set I and the front ends of the scrolls of the next succeeding set, which channel for convenience is referred to herein as a feed-channel is designated by X. The feedchannels afford passageways from the edge of the disk to the channels between all of the scrolls for smoothing or abrasive material drawn under the disk by the outer scrolls, so that the material is distributed uniformly and quickly to all portions of the rubbing surface without the necessity of its first passing through the outer channels before reaching the inner channels asis the case with some arrangements.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the outer scroll at of each set has its front end adjacent to the edge of the disk, and it curves gradually inwardly to its rear end and that aid has position slightly behind the front end of the outer of the next succeeding set of scrolls on the'disk and in front of he channel between the two scrolls and 0 text of the series from the outer scroll of the succeeding set. The scroll 0 next inwardly from the second scroll (5) of a set has its front end slightly behind the front end of the second scroll of that set; the scroll (1 next inwardly from the thirdscroll has its front end slightly behindt't-he front end of the third scroll of thatset; and the third and fourth scrolls (a and at) of a set have their rear ends approximately in a line radial of the disk and behind and inside of the front end of the fourth scroll (d) of the next succeeding set, so that the channel between the third and fourth scrolls of one set opens to the space around the center of the disk corn rehended by the inner or fourth scroll of t e next succeeding set. The scrolls ,of a set are of such length that the rear end of each, although inwardly lapping the front end of the corresponding scroll of the next succeeding set, does not overlap the front end of the scroll next inwardly in the next succeeding set; that is, the rear ends of the scrolls. of one'set do not extend into channels between t scrolls of the succeeding set, and,

As the scrolls of line smoothing material to be thrown from under the disk by centrifugal action, and at the same time centrifugal influence throws the smoothing material against the inner sides of the scrolls or flanges and works it under them and against the snrface being treated, whereby the material is distributed evenly over the surface. As smoothing material leaves the channel between the two inner scrolls of one set, it is met by the sweep of the inner scroll of the succeeding set and Works outwardly under it and the scrolls outside of it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A polishing-Wheel comprising a plate, and thereon spaced spiral scrolls arranged in sets having channels between them and there being a continuous feed-channel distinct from channels between the scrolls of a setand located between the rear ends of the scrolls of one set and the front ends of the scrolls of the succeeding set and leading from the edge of the plate directly to channels between the scrolls and extending to the inner side of the innermost scroll.
2. A polishing-wheel comprising a plate, and thereon spiral scrolls arranged successively in sets and having channels between them,-and there being an open and direct approximately straight continuous feed-channel, distinct from channels between scrolls of a set, and extending from the periphery of the plate between-"the rear ends of the scrolls of one set and the front ends of the scrolls of the next succeeding set to the inner side of the innermost scroll.
