lle it known that l, Pi-Iimr VON ZEIPEL,
a resident of Duquesne, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grat-es for Furnaces; and l do hereby declare the t'ollim'iiig to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to grates for furnaces, and particularly to grates for use with gas producers. lts object is to provide a grate construction which will completely and continuously eliminate the accumulated ash and clinlfer and at the same time prevent the` injurious intake of air except through the regular means for introducing the air.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, inA a furnace having a rotary fuel supporting portion or grate proper beneath the fuel or fire' bed, and a surrounding clinker platform, a side discharge there from, and means for scraping the clinker from the clinker platform comprising a removable scraper or plate'extending to the grate portion proper and preferably in serted through a guideway. lt also consists in other features of construction as more particularly described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section illustrating my invention as applied to a gas producer; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 F ig. 1.
While I have illustrated my invention as applied .to a gas producer, for which it is primarily designed, it will be understood that it isnot limited thereto, but includes all uses to whichit may be put wit-hin the scope of the claims. The gas producer 1 i has the cylindrical shell 2 resting on the bed plate 13 and carrying the refractory lining 3 which rests at its base on the ring plate 4: secured to the metallic shell. Mounted in the lower part of the producer is the grate or fuel support 6, which may be of any desired construction, being illustrated as of pyramidal shape extending up into the fire chamber 7, the apex of the pyramid eccentrically located lto the move' ment of the grate and acting to agitate the uel'in the fire chamber. The grate is supported on the annular wall 8, which in turn rests upon the platform 9, said platform resting upon the annular bearing 10, rotatably mounted on the rollers 11 secured 1n the 'brackets 12 on the bed plate 13. The platu form 9 extends outwardly close to the shell 2 and under the plate si. supporting the refractory lining thus forming a clinker cham ber 14 extending from the grate outwardly to the int-losing shell below the lining 3, and irrtowhich the ash and clinker will pass from the grate 6. The grate with its clinker platform is rotated by any suitable means such as by the pinion 15 engagin with the rack face 1G on the lower face o the platform 9, said pinion being carried on the shaft l? extending through the shell 2`and drive-i by any suitablepower. 0n the same l level with the clinkerreceptacle 14 is a side vopening' 18 leading into a chute 19, said discharge opening being normally closed by a door 20. The chute 19 discharges into any suitable ash cart 21 by which the ash and elinker can be carried away. To remove' the clinker and ash from the grate, I pro vide atene side of the opening 1S a suitable guideway 23 in line with the horizontal elinker platform S) and extending up to the plate. 4 supporting the refractory lining and adapted Ato receive a suitable scraper 24 which extends through such guideway over the platform 9 and when fully inserted to the grate supporting Wall 8 so that upon the rotation of the grate the scraper deflects the clinker and. ash `outwardly through the chute 19 and into the ash cart 21, scraping over the entire platform and vcompletely cleaning the same` The scraper 2l may be, if desired, removed in case the clinker has become jammed in any manner or it is not desired to rotate the grate or not necessary to use the scraper.
The grate is preferably opera-ted by air blast entering through the air pipe 26, and for that reason the fuel support 6 is preferably made in some grate or open-work form so that a small portion of ash .may pass through the same into the central air cham ber 27 under the fuel support 6.y The chamber 27 terminates in the ash receptacle 28, the same being provided with a side outlet 29 closed by a suitable door 30. Any such ash dropping through the grate is directed down into the ash receptacle 28 and past the rollers' support-ing the grate by the inwardly inclined chute 31 carried by and rotating with the grate.
. When the grate is in use the furnace or producer is employed in the usual way with either a natural draft or an induced draft,
fuel is ignited, it naturally arches over Within the re chamber and gradually descends; as combustion proceeds. The clinker and a portion'of the ash Work downwardly over the grate surface and into the clinker reprovides for the collection of a large amount of clinker. To remove this clinker and ash it is only necessary to openl the door 2O and insert the scraper'QL Withinthe guidevvay 23 on the same level as the clinker chamber and by the rotation of the grate, the clinker gathered Within the clinker chamber is defiected and ejected through the chute 19 into the. ash cart, the chamber being `eompletely cleaned in this Way, and, after which the scraper is Withdrawn and the door closed and the furnace continues to operate as before. -.Y Y
But little ash will gather inthe ash receptacle 28 under the central fuel support or grate and the same can be removed when necessary by an ordinary scraper through the door 30: The grate occupies relatively little space and provides for the side discharge of the clinker by a simple operation,
-While by operating with the pyramidal grate it collects the mass of theclinker and provides for its easy discharge Without interfering with ythe regular operation of the furnace.
What I claim is:
1. A as producer having in combination a rotata le grate comprising a centrally located grate portion proper provided With openings adapted to admit the air or steam blast, an annular Wall carrying said grate ortion, an annular horizontal clinker platorm around said wall and at a lower level than said grate portion, an outer shell or wall and a ret'ractory liningcarri'ed thereby and terminating above said clinker platform to thereby provide a clinker receptacle thereon, said shell having an outlet from said receptacle, and a scraper at said outlet and extending completely across said clinker receptacle flush with said refractory lining and aforesaid annular wall.
2. A gas producerhaving in combination a rotatable grate comprising a centrally located grate portion proper provided with openings adapted to admit the air or steam blast, an annular wall cai-"ving said grate portion, an annular horizontal clinker platform around said wall and at a lower level than said grate portion, an outer shell` or Wall and a refractorylining carried thereby and terminating. above said clinker platform to thereby provide a clinker receptacle thereon, said shell having an outlet from said receptacle, and a scraper at said outlet and extending completely across said clinker chamber flush with said refractory lining and aforesaid annular Wall, and adapted to remove -ashes from said clinker platform and from said annular Wall.
3. 'A gas producer having in combination a rotatable grate comprising a centrally located grate portion proper provided with openings adapted to admit the air or steam blast, an annular Wall carrying said grate portion, an annular horizontal clinker platform around said Wall and at a lower level than said grate portion, an outer shell or Wall and a refractory lining carried 4thereby and 'terminating above said clinker platform to thereby provide a clinkcr receptacle thereon, said shell having an outlet from said receptacle, a guideway attached to said shell at said outlet and a removable scraper comprising a plate adapted to enter said guideway and be supported therein and extending across said clinker receptacle to tit against aforesaid rotary annular wall.
